Popovich just basically gave him 3 plays the past year and let him do his thing to see his tendencies, strengths and weaknesses. Year 2 will be more of putting him in positions to succeed. He is on the right path.

My answer is NO! He is just a rookie. We need him to develop to a player that he thinks he can be. Limiting him to just take inside shots are not really ideal right now because he can still develop his outside shots. And if he truly wants to become the GOAT someday, he needs to become threats inside the paint and three point area. Maybe cut the shots in the mid range BUT he can put those attempts on 3s.

    • @elijahhutchings7947
      @elijahhutchings7947 11 днів тому +4

Why does he need to be a threat outside?? Answer that?? He is 7”6 he produces more stress closer to the basket I’m fine with him stepping out in the flow of offense. Maybe a Brook Lopez level or boogie but I would pushing him away from an kat or Myles turner type. I just think we say everyone needs to shoot idk why wbu would need to shoot. I would develop it but I think if you double down now and focus on inside transition to outside later he would better for it. A jumper is a bailout for defense and he should put max pressure on defense. With his moving ability and physical tools nobody. Should be able to guard him.

@@elijahhutchings7947 I get what you and Shaq mean, but he's still a rookie he can decide whatever his game will be... Steph has evolved the game with his outside shooting so much we already know how valuable having a great 3pt fg% is. If he's as lethal as Durant at threes while also being a DPOY-caliber player he'll undoubtedly retire as the GOAT.

@@Km-ot4qf that simple not true we just saw isaiah hartenstein be one of the best passers and bigs tear up the league the get a pay day, Rudy gobert will be remembered as one of the best bigs of his generation, Jarret Allen and nic claxton have been high sought after talent that majority of teams want, Kevon looney won a chip and has went up against guys like sabonnis and made a difference in the series being a big and out rebounding, Robert Williams elevate the Celtics lineup. I can
Go on but you get the picture. There was a video called “the myth of the stretch big” by Alex hoops which illustrates it much better. It focused on guys who could both shoot 3s and protect the rim. In his criteria only miles turner, Brook Lopez, Chet, Joel embid, jjj, Al horrford, tingus pingus, and wemby. These are the only guys that both fit as a rim protector and 3 point threat. This is evidence this archetype is not as common as people think and Wemby is actually different. So water it. It’s a tool in his toolbox but it could become detrimental fast for him and his greatness. I never said stop shooting threes I just want to know what advantage that creates for his team??what does that do for him?? He should develop it but only take em when they are in the flow off the offense, set shots, mix some middys coming of actions, etc. I watched him this year try to size up guys like Kelly oubre or daris garland then take a fading three and airball. Thats a bullshit shot. Thats what I’m talking about. It should be constant pressure that’s a bailout. The discussion was never about if he should shoot em or not but if he should shoot less
      Reasons he should shoot less
      1.)pressure/playing advantage=
Wemby is 7”6. We would never tell a guy 5”9 post up. It’s away from his advantage and what he does well. When Wemby steps out even if it looks cute he is stepping away from his advantages. Based on his physical tools and ability to move Nobody should be able to gaurd him. He should offer the same thing pascal siakim does in being a mismatch for everyone every night. He is too tall for bringing guys or could use his speed. This is where some threes could come into play and going to wing to use even more speed. And he is too tall, moves too well, and to skilled for smaller bigs. He should optimize his stress and defense want him taking that jumper cause we all know there is not much we can do with a guy like Wemby. School yard shit. We also watched him put up 30pt games this year. He got em by having a stretch where he just decides to stand in paint not by making jumpers
      2.) spacing/creation of wrong decisions=
Yes stepping out creates space but due to Wemby’s uniqueness he creates much more space than other players under the rim and in dunker spot. Trae young to capela or jokic to Gordon to get a mental picture. They role down the lane if Clint’s guy or AG guy help too much boom easy lob/dump down and if they don’t help free runs to the rim. Wemby is a bigger target and can go upstairs to a level others cannot. This makes defenders not come off him at all on help or if they come off slightly dunk. Teams will try to get smart and tag but because it’s Wemby there tags are much harder. He can develop to become a good screen touch passer etc to really punish teams for taging, also when you throw it to him in the post he already gets double and will develop if you get him to be phenomenal with post moves teams could do nothing. You don’t help dunk you do kick out to give his guard to play off the advantage he just created. Thats space
      Injuries/ability to move=
Bigs get injured more. Partly what I feel is cause we ask em to move in ways they shouldn’t. Look at kemba and ish smith shins when they change direction. Look at the positions their bodies are in some bigs can do that. MPJ, JT, KD but some can’t like AD Joel Wemby. They make moves much slower less violent and grace full, less in these body positions, etc. we say he moves like a guard and he doesn’t he can handle the ball yes but point guard he does not move like. Also in the position you have to stop hard. A little guy undercutting you hitting your knees and you have to stop all your energy. Guys get under your landing spot shooting threes especially if you shoot over them like Wemby does, etc not to say he can’t get injured under the basket but on there I think it’s more likely.
He missed 11 games this year. Which I’m fine with I give guys 15 games of grace. That is roughly a month of basketball and if you do a simple non series roll of your ankle you could be out two. But I mention him missing 11 games because they load manage him and I except the numbers to rise as he plays. It’s something to watch for but it’s a way to mitigate the risk of injury.
I’m done sorry for the long thread j just like talking ball.
It’s not an oldhead. I’m just thinking. He does most his work down low not outside so that tells you he should be more down low. Get your one or two threes cool but don’t fall in love with it your advantage is point blank. There is a reason AD is shooting less threes. Yall do always look at the game and go off that. You go off talking points. Why is he shooting volume threes like what’s the benefit in that?? Would there be more value in him shooting volume threes or working and grabbing more boards offensively and bringing in a volume shooter so the two can work off each other??
Since it’s election time and you said centers just shoot threes and have to now imma say in my best Donald trump voice….
      “Fake News”😂🤣

@@elijahhutchings7947I agree and in the bigger picture if you have a big body even in this league most likely you're not a good 3pt shooter. Either you go the Embiid way, jacking up 3s but not being efficient or going the Lopez way taking shoots efficiently as a role player, and there's a reason why he made himself a name in the league again not many bigs can be like him and let's not forget that the star of the show in Milwaukee is not a 3 ball menace.

  • @8arsa75

if you doubt that wemby taking high volume of 3 points is a good idea, here's wemby vs the player with the highest 3 point volume in the league rn (outside of steph ofc lol) :
    in europe :
    18yo Luka : 20.4pts per 33min, 57/33/82% (6.6 3PA per 33min)
    18yo Wemby : 22.2pts per 33min, 56/28/83% (5.1 3PA per 33min)
    in NBA :
    Luka : 21.7 per 33min, 50/32.7/71% (7.3 3PA per 33min, +0.7 since europe)
    Wemby : 23.7 per 33min, 53/32.5/79.5% (6.1 3PA per 33min, +1 since europe)
We can see that both were already the same kind of scorer and both were taking high volume of 3s in europe the year before their rookie season, then proceeded to make almost the same progression when going to the nba, lower 2p%, still inefficient 3p%, and a considerably higher 3pt volume.
Now lets break their respective NBA rookie seasons :
    19yo Wemby :
    -shot 32.5% on 5.5 3s per game (6.1 3PA per 33min)
-in his first 20 games shot 25.5% on 5.1 3s per game (5.6 3PA per 33min), (started the season with around the same volume than in europe)
    -in his last 50 games shot 34.9% on 5.7 3s per game (6.4 3PA per 33min), (took 1.3 more 3pts per 33min than at 18yo)
    -in his last 30 games shot 35.3% on 6.3 3s per game (6.6 3PA per 33min)
    -in his last 20 games shot 33.8% on 7.0 3s per game (7.1 3PA per 33min)
    -in his last 10 games shot 33.3% on 8.1 3s per game (8.1 3PA per 33min)
    19yo Luka :
    -shot 32.7% on 7.1 3s per game (7.3 3PA per 33min)
-in his first 20 games shot 38.3% on 6.2 3s per game (6.1 3PA per 33min), (started the season with around the same volume than in europe)
    -in his last 50 games shot 30.7% on 7.7 3s per game (7.9 3PA per 33min), (took 1.3 more 3pts per 33min than at 18yo)
    -in his last 30 games shot 27.3% on 7.9 3s per game (8.0 3PA per 33min)
    -in his last 20 games shot 27.6% on 7.8 3s per game (7.9 3PA per 33min)
    -in his last 10 games shot 21.8% on 7.8 3s per game (8.0 3PA per 33min)
In those stats we can clearly see that in their rookie season, both proved to be able to consistently shoot 35%+ on 6.5 3s per 33min or less, both % started to fall when they took a higher volume, both finished the season shooting around 8 3s per game (so high volume) inefficiently.
If we add that both are main options who take a lot of crazy shots, that both are way better off the dribble than on catch and shoot, and both are tall asf for big volume 3pt shooters we can conclude that they are as similar as it get as rookies 3pts shooters.
now what did luka did after his rookie season ?
started right were he left it at, in his sophomore season he kept increasing his volume even if his % was getting lower, and it paid, cause it instantly made him go from the low 20s to a almost 30ppg scorer, and that ever since this sophomore slump he's been a consistent high volume and efficient shooter and effortlessly around 30ppg every season.
clearly, even in europe, wemby been on the same exact track as luka scoring wise, if not better, why would he suddenly stop and become a one level scorer when luka's been the 2nd best scorer in the league at 24yo, and that his best weapon is by far his 3pt volume ?
we're in a league where the two best scorer are embiid and luka, scoring wise wemby is the closest thing you'll see to both, what would happen if embiid who was scoring 36pts in 34 minutes per game with midrange, fts and dunks was suddenly able to take 10 3s per game like luka ? what would happen if luka could score as fast and as reliably as embiid by being absolutely unstoppable in the paint and forcing fouls in every match up ? giving a response to those questions should be wemby's goal scoring wise. And I personally think he is on track to do it. even if he shoot 30% on 8 3s per game the whole next season, he'll still be on track to do it, but I think he might do even better.

To respond to Shaq, when you're shooting jumpers at an high enough % you might have a night off sometimes but you'll always create spacing for your teammates. That's a big thing to take into consideration, having a 5 that spaces the floor is very valuable too for slashing teammates. Of course, best would be to master both.

This is my first time hearing a player get criticized for having a bag. 😂 Wemby did indeed shoot a lot of jumpers in his first NBA season but still, majority of his attempts/makes still came from less than 5 feet away from the rim, so it’s not like jumpers were all he did. He was amongst the top players with the most dunks in the whole league last season. 😂 I say let Wemby develop his skills. In this modern era, everyone can shoot jumpers now and I think it’s more helpful for any team if their bigs can do that. Also, these first few years are very integral to Wemby’s development so let him work and improve his skills as much as he can now when their team is not yet competitive because I reckon in a few years, the Spurs will try to contend for the title and it will be great for them if Wemby can develop into a 3-level scorer who’s also an elite defender.

They are different players and will play differently. Wemby's ability to shoot jumpers will help him since he's not going to be able to back people down.
Outside the paint, Shaq wasn't able to do much. Inside the paint, Wemby won't be nearly as dominant. It's apples and oranges. I want to see Wemby visit Hakeem and learn post play from the Dream.

If he could knock down his free throws, he would have easily averaged Wilt numbers if we’re considering the amount of times he was getting hacked. But alas, he didn’t do that. He’s still the most dominant big man tho but just imagine if he did that. He would have been included in the GOAT convo.

I agree yes he takes too many 3s. He should take some in the flow but he has to know every jumper is a bailout. He needs to put pressure on the rim. Nobody should be able to gaurd him with his physical tools and ability to move. He needs a stubborn mentality when down low of imma do what I want and you can’t stop it. Like boogie or shaq had. I’ve watched him score 30 multiple times. Like you said he settles for jumpers then there is a stretch in the game where he stays close to basket and gets busy. He needs to do that all the time he is a unique case that it hurts when he steps away. Force the issue apply pressure. He should still work on 3 yes but your 7”6 play your advantage we don’t tell 5”9 guys to post up
