Glad to have found someone who spoke about the costumes ~ I never loved Glinda's Bubble Dress in the Musical. I love the Bubble Dress in the movie! It's so aesthetically pleasing, elegant and airy looking - The embroidery is so beautiful - Than you for this video! I loved hearing you talk costumes!
7:30 Oswald! That's the name of the dragon above the stage on Broadway! The West End's dragon is called Percival. a fun fact for you Thanks for sharing your perspective on the film's costumes! It was a treat for the mind and heart. 💚💖
I'm glad you addressed that Glinda and Elphaba were the only ones not dressed in Shiz colours. I need an in-world explanation for how they could get away with that. I suppose you could argue that Elphaba was never intending to enrol so wouldn't have a uniform to bring, but you'd expect that to be rectified within a few days. And Glinda? You'd have to assume her parents are making significant financial contributions to the school or something for them to overlook her.
Elphaba's dad is the mayor and she is green and scary so maybe no one wants to fight her on her goth anesthetics. Meanwhile nessa could pull the mayor dad thing but she WANTS to blend in. Thats my guess lol
@@scifigeek14even though Nessa trying to blend in, her uniform had a little different kind of fabric from anyone else, she kinda had the velvet one. Same goes to fiyero and pfannee that have different kind of color and design for them
I have watched so many costume-specific interviews since seeing this amazing movie in search of anything that even seems to be a wisp of reasoning behind what looks like absolutely Zero zippers were involved in any of the casts' outfits. Throughout the entire movie, I just kept getting drawn to all the buttons and clasps and literally everything about these wonderful designs that the lack of visible zippers has stuck with me. Having also gone to college for costume design, I really enjoyed listening to your take on these costumes.
I loved how they brought the focus of the sea and the sky into both the costumes and the music. How Glinda remarked that she looked like "the prettiest?? fish in the sea" when she was getting dressed for the Ozdust and how her dress did make her look like a tropical fish. The motif of the fish or water came back whenever a big change was coming in the girls' lives, from entering Shiz, when Elphaba's powers were discovered and Morrible offered her a place in her sorcery seminar, when they were going to the Ozdust and about to be friends, when Elphaba rescued the cub and began to have feelings for Fiyero.
One of my favorite things about the movie was all the layers of texture and color on all the costumes and sets. It was so gorgeous. Thanks for sharing more information about the inspiration and history behind the silhouettes! Super insightful and it made me love the costuming even more!
Also i like the butterfly dress Glinda has but the oz dust ballroom Nessa Rose outfit is the only one i dont like to simple in that outfit but her silver shoes love it
Yes!! I'm so happy to find this video, after watching Paul Tazewll speak about the costuming in interviews I really wanted to see some more appreciation for the costuming in the movie because it was phenomenal!
@@maybebrePlease do! I would go further back to sone analysis on costuming in Golden Age musicals. Perhaps how to draw inspiration from them too? How to reference Meet Me in St. Louis without looking like upholstery? 😅
I’m sorry but no tiny details on the Broadway costumes?? Did you even see the pictures you posted? I’m in the process right now of making paper dolls of the broadway costumes so I’ve been looking up closeup pics of all the costumes and let me tell you there are so many tiny details. Hand sewn sequins onto every inch of her bubble dress, hand embroidered flowers covering the entire bodice and skirt for thank goodness, striped boning on every bodice she wears. It doesn’t seem like you did any research about the show for this video
The obe thing I would change is giving Galinda more color. Like, Elle Woods's and Barbie's signature color is pink, it's what we associate with them very strongly, but they don't literally wear nothing but pink, whereas Galinda pretty much does, aside from the Ozdust dress. I understand wanting her to stand out and such, but at least the clothes on the racks in her room could have more variation.
I wonder if there's any Ozian regional representation in the Shiz University uniforms. Like pink is associated with the region Glinda's from, and coral is associated with Munchkinland. Who knows
I thought the coral was associated with Munchkinland but i don’t know if any other Gillikin characters were named? Avaric is a book character who’s from the same region but his scenes were cut from the movie.
Yeah, there are color associations in the original books, but it doesn't seem to carry into Wicked as much. I'm pretty sure Shiz isn't in Munchkinland?
I noticed that the students wearing the coral are from Munchkinland. This makes me think that the coral is to show where they are from and to differentiate them from the other Shiz students.
Why is Glinda allowed to wear her own clothes and not the school uniform? Elphaba wasn't meant to enroll at th school, so where did all her new clothes come from??
I’m a costume designer and loved the film so much, but was so bothered by the hot pink in the Ozzian’s costumes!! I felt like it was really heavy handed 😢 x
I’ll never get over the moment when the Flying Monkeys stole Glinda’s jacket she wore to the Emerald City. The stunning mix of curves and angles!!!

The bead work on the bubble dress is so stunning and my favorite dress ower all.

I always thought her Ozdust dress looks like a flower. And sorry, I still does.

Curious about your costuming thoughts of other musicals turned movies like West Side Story and Into the Woods.
oooooo that's such a good idea, might have to do that in the future!

What did you think about Nessa’s costumes? Her knitted dress for the Ozdust scene felt pretty out of place to me (she did look really pretty tho)

Munchkinland=blue, quadling country=red, Winkie country=yellow, emerald city=green, Gillikin country=purple
