Neosuchia: Ancestors of Modern Crocodilians

  • Neosuchians first diverged from their Notosuchian cousins during the Early Jurassic and tended to be semi-aquatic in nature. Some basal forms such as the Atoposaurids were diminutive terrestrial carnivores that were most common in Late Jurassic and Early Cretaceous Europe. Most of the more derived Neosuchians were generally similar to modern crocodilians in appearance, being semi-aquatic predators. The Goniopholids inhabited very similar niches to crocodiles and alligators before the latter two groups evolved, declining in diversity during the Late Cretaceous. Some Neosuchians were also tiny in comparison to their modern relatives, such as Bernissartia and Susisuchus. The derived clade Eusuchia emerged during the Early Cretaceous and diversified rapidly during the second half of the period.

Despite the common misconception that crocodilians stayed genuinely the same since the time of the dinosaurs, I can see why some people would think that especially looking at ancestors like deinosuchus. Very interesting that they haven't changed too much.

This is one of the main problems that I have with media when it comes to representing prehistoric animals. Not only the fact that animals do change over time from environmental changes and competition, but also the appearance of the animal changes the more research we know. That was why I loved Prehistoric Planet, although I wish they did more time periods and animals than just the late Cretaceous.

A big role plays that both scientists and illustrators look for living examples when building models and fleshing out the fossil skeletons. Everything resembles modern animals because we reconstruct them this way.

Crocodiles are older than the anthrax virus. They are amazing creatures and they are the only reason half the African savanah doesn't get wiped out during anthrax outbreaks. We most likely owe our early existence to these beasts because they kept the waters clean and free of anthrax much of the time.

It would be cool if you could do a few episodes on ecosystems as they existed; if I could throw out a topic I would like to see an explanation of Pleistocene North America and how homotherium, smilodon, panthera atrox, american cheetahs, and whatever other monster cats were wandering around interacted and what specific niches they filled. Otherwise keep up the good work polar bear doctor man.

1:50 That is actually an image of Montsecosuchus, who may not be an atoposaurid .
Knoetschkesuchus and Aprosuchus are also probably not atoposaurids. They were assigned to the clade based on their resemblance to Theriosuchus. However, Theriosuchus is no longer thought to be an atoposaurid. It and the genuine atoposaurid Alligatorium were the only "atoposaurids" incorporated by most phylogenic analyses that assigned new taxa to the clade. While both Knoetschkesuchus and Aprosuchus were named after this was discovered, the relevant study wasn't cited in either paper, so it seems that authors are unaware of it.

You know crocodillians seem represent both stereotypes.
On one hand based on some species, one could say they were extremely diverse, but if you use other species to make a judgement one could very easily say they are morpholigcally conservative. It's all perspective in the end.
Also one last interesting thing, if you think about it, if it wasn't for mammals, then the Cenozoic would be the age of the Neosuchia instead
