Neosuchia: Ancestors of Modern Crocodilians
Вставка
- Опубліковано 18 чер 2022
- Neosuchians first diverged from their Notosuchian cousins during the Early Jurassic and tended to be semi-aquatic in nature. Some basal forms such as the Atoposaurids were diminutive terrestrial carnivores that were most common in Late Jurassic and Early Cretaceous Europe. Most of the more derived Neosuchians were generally similar to modern crocodilians in appearance, being semi-aquatic predators. The Goniopholids inhabited very similar niches to crocodiles and alligators before the latter two groups evolved, declining in diversity during the Late Cretaceous. Some Neosuchians were also tiny in comparison to their modern relatives, such as Bernissartia and Susisuchus. The derived clade Eusuchia emerged during the Early Cretaceous and diversified rapidly during the second half of the period.

Despite the common misconception that crocodilians stayed genuinely the same since the time of the dinosaurs, I can see why some people would think that especially looking at ancestors like deinosuchus. Very interesting that they haven't changed too much.
This is one of the main problems that I have with media when it comes to representing prehistoric animals. Not only the fact that animals do change over time from environmental changes and competition, but also the appearance of the animal changes the more research we know. That was why I loved Prehistoric Planet, although I wish they did more time periods and animals than just the late Cretaceous.
The most successful lineage were Alligatorids
Gas prices change more than crocs evolved.
Thanks BIDEN
Several different types of reptile and amphibian convergent developed the same body plan. Even primative cetaceans.
A big role plays that both scientists and illustrators look for living examples when building models and fleshing out the fossil skeletons. Everything resembles modern animals because we reconstruct them this way.
Sea serpents, you say? I shall be awaiting that video with bated breath.
Also, I can't be the only one wishing that I could see those mini-crocs and give their teensy little snoots the boops they so clearly need
Really love the range of content you cover, Dr. Polaris. Always look forward to watching your videos 😊
You deserve WAY more subscribers! This channel is amazing, it's like your running an online museum!
Man! Mother Nature didn't want to change that template much... lol
Crocodiles are older than the anthrax virus. They are amazing creatures and they are the only reason half the African savanah doesn't get wiped out during anthrax outbreaks. We most likely owe our early existence to these beasts because they kept the waters clean and free of anthrax much of the time.
dear dr polaris, i dreamt as a child to be astronaut or scientist, life turned out different, now im an old man, but the child in me isnt dead, i still keep dreaming, exploring, learning, thank you for giving a simple man like me an unique insight brought with heart and love. traveling trough time, seeing the earth evolve, seeing the nature doing its best to be surprising, smart, i really enjoy the traveling. thank you for al the good work!
Neosuchians are just as cool as the other oddball prehsitoric crocodillimorph
Also great video and hope yall have a good day
banger as per usual
I have been binge-watching your stuff for the last few days. It would be cool if you could do a few episodes on ecosystems as they existed; if I could throw out a topic I would like to see an explanation of Pleistocene North America and how homotherium, smilodon, panthera atrox, american cheetahs, and whatever other monster cats were wandering around interacted and what specific niches they filled. Otherwise keep up the good work polar bear doctor man.
I'm really looking forwarded to seeing you cover the other later Neosuchians in the future.
Please do the Mekosuchians (ex. Mekosuchus, Quinkana) because they lived with humans
Such an underrated channel.
totally agree.
Thanks!
For sure.
1:50 That is actually an image of Montsecosuchus, who may not be an atoposaurid .
Knoetschkesuchus and Aprosuchus are also probably not atoposaurids. They were assigned to the clade based on their resemblance to Theriosuchus. However, Theriosuchus is no longer thought to be an atoposaurid. It and the genuine atoposaurid Alligatorium were the only "atoposaurids" incorporated by most phylogenic analyses that assigned new taxa to the clade. While both Knoetschkesuchus and Aprosuchus were named after this was discovered, the relevant study wasn't cited in either paper, so it seems that authors are unaware of it.
Personally, I’d like to see you cover the Hyenodonts or Rhinos.
It is hard to imagine these creatures so close to alligators and crocodiles but bound to the land. Strange and fascinating! Especially the smaller specimens, I think. A crocodilian the size of a lizard sounds really interesting.
In my opinion you should cover and Make a video about Varanus lizard family they evolution and family
That’s also a really good idea!
@@dr.polaris6423 thankyou
@@dr.polaris6423 or a Video about probably my favorite prehistoric croc relatives, the thalatosuchians, the jurassic fully aquatic crocodiles
can you imagine what would the world be like if those early Crocodilian species never went extinct
Well certain croc species were still alive 60,000 years ago when the aboriginal people first arrived in Australia, longer than 30ft and weighing twice as much as current salt water crocodiles.
Ah, a relative of Gustave. I learned about that crocodile about a few years ago 🤯😲😱😲
jesus, mesosoic europe was such a refugium
It sure was! A really unique crossroads containing such a mixture of different animal groups.
Another thing you could be interested in to talk about are the placoderms and the lobe-finned fish that dominated the Devonian waters.
That’s a good idea. I’ll keep that in mind.
How politicians push for abortion to use as anti aging.
Stanford University just published a paper on it.
@@dr.floridaman4805 can you send a link to that study?
@@dr.polaris6423 maybe also a talk about the huge monitor lizards that roamed Australia and its believed very large crocodiles existed during this time as well much larger than the ones today. Love your channel.
Anither fantastic video! And another of yours that's introduced me to a family of animals I wish was still alive today, the atoposauridae! Little terrestrial croc babies! Adorable and extremely fascinating!
Evolution is incredible, providing one ignores the family bloodline of my former in-laws.
Lots of ignoring. Ignorant people are usful to e evil ones.
Of so many Videos about crocodile relatives taht werent quite crocodile like, we finaly croc like crocs🤣
Any Alter-Earth videos in the pipe? I want more Spec-Evo content, please.
i love your content
You mean there's a dwarf crocodile oh my goodness.
For a video, could you please do the evolution of the red panda? I think it would be very interesting to hear you talk about their extinct ancestors.
I have actually done a video on them before!
@@dr.polaris6423 Really? That's so cool! I'll go look it up and watch it.
THE BRAZILIAN IMPOSTERSUCHUS
Please do a video on Machairodontini! It’s the last sabre-tooth video left😭
Will you be giving special focus to the Planocranids and Mekosuchines.
Just wondering, are there any upcoming videos on alter earth or has the series been canceled/postponed?
Nice to see a new one from you!
Crocodile is my favourite word, but the things are ugly customers indeed 😑
I was offered a semi conscience example in Sri Lanka once while on a excursion tour, neither of us were happy with the arrangement so a deal wasn't struck 😑
I love this chsnnel
Cool, thank you very much.
I always thought the 'ch' in suchia was pronounced with a 'k' sound. Have I been pronouncing it wrong this whole time? But he also uses 'k' sound when pronouncing suchus, sucho and suchid.
You know crocodillians seem represent both stereotypes.
On one hand based on some species, one could say they were extremely diverse, but if you use other species to make a judgement one could very easily say they are morpholigcally conservative. It's all perspective in the end.
Also one last interesting thing, if you think about it, if it wasn't for mammals, then the Cenozoic would be the age of the Neosuchia instead
age of avians I would think
@@chrisslaughter8448 I guess it would depend, crocodillians have the advantage of possessing two pairs of limb. Birds have wings
Today we think of crocs as exclusively water-based, when in reality they seemed to be the forerunners of future mammal niches along with dinosaurs.
?
Hello again
What music does play in the background ?
So where do Sarcosuchus and Deinosuchus fall under? I thought it would be Neosuchia
Deinosuchus is an alligatoroid, so a member of crown crocs (Crocodylia) and therefore Eusuchia, Sarcosuchus is a pholidosaurid, which are part of Tethysuchia, a neosuchian lineage which I would have thought would be covered here, perhaps in a future video
Will crocodiles, alligators, gharials, and caimans ever get bigger like their ancient relatives?
Depends on so many factors
Its amazing how much earth has changed over the millions of years I believe the expanding earthquake theory makes sense to me and why all the continents were all close together and early on there was way more oxygen thus the reptiles being much larger.
Well I can’t see how crocodiles could be any scarier
“Their ancestors had lasers “
….
I'm pretty sure it's pronounced SUKIAN
I am going to assume the pancake crocodilians had a lure structure developed from their tongue and you can't stop me from assuming that even without evidence. So there.
Came here to just report the video and inform you that clickbait is a real issue... If you need to lie, then you are not an informed enough person...
