Stumbled in a Karaoke bar last year in Antigua Guatemala, when they asked my nationality and I replied "Dutch". They handed me a mic and put this song on. Some Germans were around and started laughing when the song started. Many people confuse Dutch with Deutsch, but the Germans of course knew the difference... So suddenly I have to sing something in a language which is not my own. Luckily I do happen to speak a bit of German and I managed to sing along. Got a standing ovation from the Germans afterwards and they told me I did a pretty decent job of it. It was a very fun experience. Up to this day though, probably most people in that bar never realised this was a hard thing to do when your not actually German.....
If your did your best in singing it is always right. Don't think about Dutch or German. Some people are nice and friendly and some never ever had that experience, to be a friend.
For all those wondering: there are 2 versions. English, and the original - German. In the english version the song is about two people buying 99 red balloons, and letting them go one by one at dusk. At a local military base something’s wrong with the radar’s AI software: so noticing the red balloons it overreacts, putting out a red alert - mistaking the balloons for 99 rockets. On “99 Decision Street”, 99 Ministers have a meeting, and get the President on the line. They mobilize the army, and send 99 ace jet pilots in experimental, high-tech airplanes to investigate the threat. The song ends as the pilots fly over the “rockets” and realize that they were nothing but.... 99 red balloons. Now, the original is much more... violent. This is about a soldier telling a story: 99 Balloons were let go flying to the air by someone. People start thinking that they are UFOs, and start panicking. To investigate, a general sends 99 ace pilots to see if they are actually UFOs, and to hit red alarm if it is so. The pilots fly toward the location, and realize that those are only balloons. But the pilots were really pumped up about their first job in years: so they start shooting at the sky for fun, “thinking that they are Cpt. Kirk”. The neighboring country is confused, and thinks that the planes have engaged the “alien threat”. So what to do? They load their AA guns, and shoot at the balloons, damaging and destroying one of the jets of the other country, killing the pilot. 99 defense ministers come together, and they are all power hungry. Seeing the profit they can make from war, they hit red alert, and take the accident as an act of aggression, declaring war. 99 years of war follow, leaving the world in ruins, as the singer says “there are no more defense ministers or jets left”. There is really no room for a victory, as both countries are torn to shreds. The same soldier finishes the song, by saying that while doing his patrol rounds, looking at the world in ruins and ashes, he finds a red balloon. He starts thinking about the person that let the 99 balloons go, he tosses the red balloon he found in the air, and it flies up.
Once upon a time, the USA warning system announced a massive Rocket Attack from soviet union. In the end, the RADAR had detected the Rising Moon, they did not expect the waves having such a range.

This song speaks of the hopes and dreams of the German people, that were lost following WWII and during the division between East and West Germany. The 99 balloons that this song speaks of are thought to represent the dreams of the Germans on either side of the division and discusses how the conflict destroyed those dreams and lives of the people. It mentions how the war reacted to those dreams and ruined their world, but really they were just innocent hopes for a better future.

German is really not that hard to learn =). I love this song its so nice, we are just discussing this in German class due to its reference to the cold war =)
The lyrics "auf Englisch" are better described as a transliteration. The German language (which I find beautiful) has syntax and declension which make translation difficult in the context of a song. Peter Schilling's classic "Völlig Losgelöst/Major Tom" is (to me) even more amazing since the same story is told in each language.
This song is so great. Good day, all.
Animaster The reason why the lyrics are in German as it was originally a German song but it grew so popular that someone made a US version of it. So that’s why it’s written in German.

panos daskalopoulos Well, I hope you do her proud. Vielen Gluck. Nena also sings an older song (I'm not sure if it could be considered a folksong or not) that has been around for some time. " Die Gedanken Sind Frei." It means, "My thoughts are free.". Basically, the song is about how (in this case "I" or "ME") you might not understand me, or my way of thinking, but I will think what I want, no matter what you do to me. No matter how you may try to hurt me or break me, imprison me, put me in chains, you will never break my will, for my thoughts will keep me free. There is no real effective word for word translation for it, but that is the gist of the message. Then there's a neat little lullaby entitled, "Heidschi Bumbeidschi", you might want to learn, if you haven't already.
Either one is acceptable but I think the "D" needs to be upper case. The German language is funny that way. A word can take on a whole different meaning depending if the characters are in upper or lower case.
Im Italian and we always say oh God German language sounds so forceful and abrasive but Im getting more attached to it. Im starting to think it sounds just as beautiful and lyrical as any romance language.
I understand the lyrics. The reason many people don't understand true meaning is that it's in s foreign language to most other songs, and that it has such an upbeat melody. Of course the song is actually about the fears that people had during the Cold War, and how tiny something could have been to trigger a nuclear war
I am a german native speaker but as i first heard this song i was a kid so i just thought it was about pretty balloons. I only got the substantial meaning later...
RickyTheGunner 4545 The idea came from when one of the ban meme bers was at a rollin stones concert and they released balloons and he got frightened that they would go over the east Berlin Wall (which was covered by the Soviet Union) and that they'd mistake it for aircraft
i had to go and watch the english version after growing up with this version..... gahhh it was horrendous! so much lost in the translation to keep a similar rhythm but the rhythm was still off and it was in the wrong key and gahhh it sounded so ugly compared to this! i love the Deutsch version forever
There are definitely errors here. Being German as you say you are, you would have noticed it right from the point where you read Dusenjager instead of DusenFlieger. they don't even sound the same. I've been listening to this song since it was first released back in the 1980's. I was happy to find the words to the song when the Internet came out. I also sing this song at karaoke. I've never gotten a word wrong even when the spelling is not correct.
Pay attention to German translation. I really think many are ignorant and don't understand that The German and English versions are not the same. If you understand German, you would know this.

Thanks!!! The only song I could practise my German with!!! How could we survive without internet?!!
when I try to learn german be like: how the hell am i supposed to know all these things????
Try duolingo. Also learning a language to the point where you can understand basic conversation and to where you can understand songs about nuclear war are two different things.
meee tooooooooooooooooooooooo, well I live in Germany so I have to learn this language 😟😟
Elevendy Seven I did some duolingo, and I spend like 1/2 hours after school trying to learn the language. But the fucking cases... It's 100000x harder than trying to pee with a boner.
티모 xd English was harder. Trust me, I'm Deutsch!
티모 xd yeah I think german is too complex to learn with duolingo, not that it's hard
0:41 Pause.
*Pauses video*
Me: "Ok now what?"
Learning this song is not easy when your first language is English and you don't know German..
Wunderbar!
I grew up with the English version and then found the "German version" which I soon found out is actually the original version and found that I love singing along to the English one but this version is so much better 😊 xxx
Fun Fact: The Christmas song Silent Night is German too.
@@russiancyborg4330 really? Holy crap that's awesome! xxx
Schöne single!
should say original not german version
+Daniel Mann
Same thing really.
I meant because it's the best version :P
+A S R Original means first. The English one came second because of it's popularity. They're both versions of the same song but only this is the original.
Well actually, the lyrics are different altogether on the English one
Doesn't mean this isn't the German version. Can't it be both?
I've never heard this version before thnks
Einfach klasse
German is really not that hard to learn =). I love this song its so nice, we are just discussing this in German class due to its reference to the cold war =)
I have to learn this to sing it in German next week. Danke.
The Impossible Quiz 2 😂
...and a great new year too!
Danke!!!
Nobody noticed this song is actually about cold war and the stupid idea of bombing. Sounds even more realistic now. Peace everywhere in the world.
Romain ricart if you think the threat of bombing is more real now than it was during the cold War then you are not a smart man
This song is so great.
Good day, all.
SPELLING PLEEEAAAAAAASSSSEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Animaster The reason why the lyrics are in German as it was originally a German song but it grew so popular that someone made a US version of it. So that’s why it’s written in German.
@@Itsnoahscott They mean the spelling in german is incorrect. In many places its just wrong.
pretty good stuff! likie likie.
Don’t mind your average American here in a song about a nuclear missile in Germany
Do you know whether they keep that stuff in the English version?
DEUTSCHLANDDDDDDD
Yes! I've been trying to learn for years now and the grammar still gets me!
Great song I was born in Germany but moved at the age of 2 I gignt know how to talk but now I speak English
Verry good;Nagyon jó!
I speak English and yet prefer this version. Thanks!
i have to learn it buy heart for my German teacher and sing it at the end of the school year with my class
panos daskalopoulos Well, I hope you do her proud. Then there's a neat little lullaby entitled, "Heidschi Bumbeidschi", you might want to learn, if you haven't already.
i will listen to them
danke schön
* if it a noun its dankeschön
Either one is acceptable but I think the "D" needs to be upper case. The German language is funny that way. A word can take on a whole different meaning depending if the characters are in upper or lower case.
so true !!!
german is such a beautiful language. powerful and graceful at the same time.
I like the German version better then english
Alle deine Lieder bringen mich zum weinen
I don't know German much, but this sounds pretty good.. Germans will easily know this good lol
Indeed
I just found this song. It's wicked sick! It's freaking wonderful!
tommy vercitti sends his regards
Tommy Vercetti, remember the name, this city is mine now.
This song: the only reason i ever listen to Wave103
3:18 the best part of the song
Imagine 99 air balloons crossing the border from Mexico to the US...
I just came back from Switzerland, France and Germany as it was my first time in Europe. The journey I took this year rocks!!!

99 Luftballons is German Despacito
bad lyrics, lots of spelling mistakes
Dude I heard this from the German concert at my school!
I LOVE this song!!! :D
Dammit Lance I promised your mother that I'll bring you home, let this be...our final ride...
Tommy..
For non-German speakers, 99 is spelled "Neunundneuzig" :)
Pretty sure its spelt Nine-or-nine
Jonathan Campbell no they just shortened it to make a good song. If English people say nine nine we kinda know what they mean.
I love this! 😍😍
I need to learn the lyrics so I can see along..
#RechtschreibungFail
Ach ja, das passiert
Ich liebe deine Lieder😍
Im Italian and we always say oh God German language sounds so forceful and abrasive but Im getting more attached to it. Im starting to think it sounds just as beautiful and lyrical as any romance language.
i thought the same before i moved here 😂
@@kix_501st haha I bet it's beautiful. I've never been outside the continental US
Ich liebe dieses Lied sooo sehr
My name is Tenya Iida. You killed my brother. Prepare to die, my dude.
Wrong video? Also, Stain didn't kill Ingenium. Unless it's another story arc?

I cringe when i write in german... Hope the german people dont mind !!!
Keiner hat aufgepaßt
lachen laut...Ich liebe dieses Lied! ❤️
yo am i the only one who knows how sad this song actually is?
Watchmojo just released a video that talks exactly about that haha
thanks
ČÉÉÉÉŠIII DO TOHO!!! :3
i had to go and watch the english version after growing up with this version..... gahhh it was horrendous! so much lost in the translation to keep a similar rhythm but the rhythm was still off and it was in the wrong key and gahhh it sounded so ugly compared to this! i love the Deutsch version forever
This is german, tho.
ja, und?
Queencrazy1997 Oh I apologize greatly. I thought you wrote Dutch but I looked back and you said Deutsch. My mistake.
dummkopf....
Queencrazy1997 Whoa, I didn't say anything bad to you. That swear was unnecessary. Are you ok?
Very nice, thanks Pinguins😂❤❤❤❤
There are several wrong lyrics =\ ya might wanna go back and edit
nice now i can sing it aswell :D
All of these are spelled really wrong
Bobby Busk actually correct in german
Im a german btw
Bobby Busk maybe they could have used "ß" instead of "ss" but they are both the same letter so yeh
