DIY Staircase Railing Fabrication and Install

  • This DIY Staircase Railing project was probably the most challenging piece of finish carpentry work that I've tried on this ICF build. After a few attempts at building custom box newels, I finally was able to get the rustic look and color I had envisioned. Drilling holes in the oak angled staircase railing was difficult using a 3/4 inch spade bit I kept at it. The round balusters left over from the exterior deck rail was a perfect complement to the dark stain color and we were able to save quite a bit of money on the project by fabricating the whole thing from scratch.

Very nice railing, it fits the house design just super. With the top rail, you could always use pocket screws from below the rail into the post. They even make woods for the pocket holes.

OMG! 8 weeks? Give or take, I get that, but holy cow! I'm so excited for you guys! I can already envision the girl leaning over the railing hollering, "Mom!" maybe, "Dad!" But, hollering for dad would possibly mean something went wrong that needs fixed so let's hope it's mom that is hollered for. 🤣
The staircase and loft look so nice! I can see the loft becoming the place to enjoy spectacular views in the future. I'm just so excited for y'all!
P.S. Did you get the desk moved? Maybe I missed that part somehow?

A lot of questions unanswered. like, how the posts are attached to the floor. how the verticals are inserted one at a time without the whole thing falling apart. why the half-post, I mean, it's fun to watch you work in time lapse but it really isn't very helpful for someone who is trying to do the job.

Looks good. I helped a friend build a rustic stair railing for his cabin but that was far more rustic, everything was rough hewn 3" poles with 1" tenons we cut with a tenon cutter on a Hole Hawg drill. I modified a Harbor Freight tubing coper to drill all of the angled holes and it did until the bushings disintegrated on the last hole. He likes it and I'm pretty proud that it worked out as intended.
What you did is far more polished and it looks great. I'm not sure you could call it rustic though. I love the contrast of the stain on it and the ceiling against the white walls.

You do such a great job with whatever you take on. A question I hope you can answer: I am wondering why people gravitate towards high ceilings where windows and lighting become a monumental feat to reach, as we get older especially, in homes that are being built for old age hopefully?! Is it just an aesthetic preference or is there some practical purpose I am not aware of? It just seems to me that if I am designing a home I hope to remain in through old age, I want to design as maintenance-easy as possible. These double story rooms make it so you can't change a light bulb without hiring a professional!

That is awesome! I keep telling my husband we need some new front steps and railing. You're hired! Seriously, I love your style, Jeremy. It's simple, rustic yet classy. My husband used to love creating things like that, but he has been in too much pain to build stuff lately, do anymore than is necessary so we'll have to hire it out, I guess, if he ever decides he wants to do it. Won't be long until you move in. I can't wait until we see you do a session of The Dirt sitting on your front porch looking out over the mountains. Love to you both, Cynthia
