Her observations are ridiculously spot on. In this one, she mentioned Sue being pregnant. In the book, she has a pregnancy scare. Carrie ends up dying in her arms crying out for her mom and Sue gets her period.
Tommy and Sue were never in on it, they were really trying to be nice. Also not everybody was in on it, only Chris, Billy, Norma and they're friends. If you notice, not everybody laughed when they pranked her and Tommy got knocked out. Everybody laughing at her afterwards was all in Carrie's head.
That's an important point. Many people only notice the part where everyone (including the gym teacher) seems to be laughing at Carrie, and miss the fact that it's mostly in Carrie's head. I think some of the "edited for television" versions of the movie are cut in such a way that it seems like everyone really is laughing at poor Carrie.
Billy was manipulated into it in a really bad way

Hannah pointed out exactly what made me so frustrated with this. Carrie is condemned and judged as evil and nothing is said about the extreme bullying and the insanity of her mother that drove her to finally break.
Even today, bullying is downplayed. Back in the 1970s, it was something kids were expected to deal with, and teachers could only do so much if the parents didn't see a problem.
I doubt anybody knew just how disturbed and abusive Mrs. White was. Neighbors and coworkers knew her as the crazy fanatical Christian, so they had as little to do with her as possible.
Carrie was fed, clothed, clean, and not coming to school with odd bruises or cuts. She was the 'weird' kid that people picked on.
Lots of children as well as adults are bullied on a daily basis, but that does not entitle someone to torch an entire gymnasium full of adolescents to death. Carrie is a sick demented psychopath and anyone who co-signs to this lunacy is just as loony tunes as she is?!
I remember going to a Christian School and my teacher said Carrie was the devil😂

Hannah's reaction to the INSANITY of Carrie's mom and just how awful it really is. She caught on immediately while Ash was a bit confused at first. Carrie had no clue what a period was and all she got as an answer was horror and abuse. It's infuriating to witness. This is a fantastic horror film but it's also heartbreaking.
Carrie's mom is having a moment right now. She's everywhere.
I agree that Carrie's mum is absolutely insane. Heck, if she tried to join that Westboro Baptist Church, she probably would have got kicked out for being too extreme.

Carrie's mom is everything wrong with christianity!
Hannah was spot on with almost everything....even saying Sue was pregnant...because she was in the book and loses the baby towards the end. The book goes way further than the movie. On Carrie's walk home from the prom she destroys the entire town. This was such a joy to watch with you two! The actress playing Sue's mother is Amy Irving's mother in real life.
Thank Stephen King's wife for this one. I remember reading that he had thrown this story in the trash, not thinking it was any good, but she took it out, read it and said THIS is the story you need to send out. Now we have a classic.
Also, Sissy Spacek wanted to not hang out with the rest of the cast off set so that she remain in her character as being shy and outcast. Goes to show that Sissy Spacek was very talented at her craft.

Sue and Tommy were not in on the prank. Sue legitimately wanted to make amends for what she did in the locker room by giving Carrie a great night, & Tommy was a legitimate nice guy. (Thank the Maker the actor William Katt toned down the fro when he starred in "The Greatest American Hero"!)

I just have to say that I met Sissy Spacek once and she was the sweetest person in the world. And she's a tiny woman. The idea of casting her as a psychic mass murdering avenger was a stroke of brilliance!
Yes! Only Sissy can play Carrie and give that look!
I'd like to meet her one day. I met Linda Blair in 2018. She was tiny as well and super sweet. I got to talk to her for a while. I saw Exorcist at 8 when I snuck into the theater with my friend and his older brother. It was pretty intense seeing it that young but Carrie was really upsetting at 11.

One of the most beautiful actresses of all time, IMO, and a total master of her craft - Badlands and Coal Miners Daughter are proof of that. There’s a whole generation of boys who fell in love with her when she twirled a baton on Saturday Night Live, myself included.
Carrie is based on two girls from his school, both bullied badly, both died young, one of epilepsy and one took her own life, hence his hate of bullies.

Keep your head up
Try to get sunshine on you, it really does heal, even if just from the window..I am rooting for you, you are wonderful!
Wash your bedsheets at high temperature. Remember to keep the blinds open during daylight. Give yourself up to the shite sleeping pattern and go for a walk at 4am. Watch the sun rise. A mental walk in your back garden/balcony does count you know. Clean slowly and methodically, don't rush it, do a bit at a time and start again at the start when you're done, like painting the golden gate bridge. When you talk to yourself, say nice things. If things get too bad, and you're not smoking weed, smoke some weed. If things get too bad, and you have been smoking weed, stop smoking weed. Get off the screen and stare at the wall for an hour just thinking. When you've done all of that you should be able to pop out for a sausage roll in the shop. Use that time in the real world to plan your next move.

I’m so sorry you’re going through that. I feel bad giving you tips, because that seems to minimize the weight of it.
I’ll put it this way: When I am physically drained from mental health exhaustion, the first thing I do is drink a glass of water and then take a shower. Honestly, dehydration sneaks up on you and needing a shower does too.
These things will NOT magically cure your mental health, but they can make you feel a little better and sometimes that little boost can make a real difference. Kind of like taking medicine for a cold won’t cure the cold, but can help you live with it.
Getting some exercise helps too, but sometimes that’s physically impossible when it’s bad. Maybe just a walk around the block or your backyard.
I really hope you can recover. You’re very much not alone.
It’s almost scary how Hannah always seems to get the plot right of a movie or damn near close 😂😂

One of the Biggest Jump Scares in Movie History! When that Hand came out of the Ground the whole Theatre Screamed!
Not only did Carrie kill everyone at the high school, but she also unleashed destruction upon most of the town and its inhabitants on her way home in the book. Carrie, Stephen King's first novel, achieved tremendous success, especially after its film adaptation. While many of King's works feature bullies, Carrie delves into themes of puberty and abuse. By the way, Nancy Allen, who portrayed Chris Hargensen, the main bullying girl in the movie, also played Anne Lewis in RoboCop (1987) . A movie I know both of you guys will love.
Annoying chick in the red baseball cap is PJ Soles, who played Linda in Halloween 78.
The girl with the glasses is Edie (forgot her last name), who's the secretary in Ferris Bueller's Day Off. That woman was hysterically funny.
Of course John Travolta has a small role.

The scene of Carrie drenched in blood at the prom is an iconic scene in cinema. Great film imo and great performance by Sissy Spacek as Carrie.
In the book Carrie actually levels half the town.
It is an interesting twist the you end up feeling so heartbroken for a character who on the surface would be considered a monster and a villain.
What you two are not comprehending that this behavior (slapping women/girls, bullying, even the clothes) was normal 1970's American culture. The draws for this movie were John Travolta (who was a prominent TV actor in a show called Welcome Back Kotter) and William Katt - Tommy (who was our Greatest American Hero actor). In my school - it was the job of the assistant principal to punish students - slapping, paddling etc. This wasn't stopped until years later. And there are a MILLION Hollywood movies where women were slapped when they got "hysterical." Thus that scene in Airplane where they line up to slap that woman.
Agreed on all points. Also, at the time it was widely believed at the time that if someone got hysterical, you needed to "snap them out of it" before they "made themselves sick." This applied to children as well as women. (For example, when a young kid gets very upset, they may start hyperventilating.) In such cases, slapping them wasn't really meant to hurt them, it was meant to shock them out of their hysteria and get them to catch their breath and start breathing normally. A less violent method was to throw a glass of cold water in their face (also a method for reviving an unconscious person) or to drag them into the bathroom and dunk their head into a sink full of cold water. I honestly have no idea if any of these methods have any validity or what is now considered to be the correct method to calm down a person who has become hysterical.
in the UK we still hit children with canes in the late 80s, and it wasn't officially banned in *all* parts of the UK until 2003, but it's already hard to imagine it was ever acceptable.

Yeah, sure, it didn't stop the trope, but that scene in "Airplane" is literally what I'll politely call, a urine take on this awful cliche of physical assault being played for laughs.

Suzy and Tommy were not in on it and if you see the bucket hit Tommy's head... I'm pretty sure that's a killing blow. Carrie just doubted everyone in the end and imagined the teacher and Sue laughing

I never quite understood how getting hit in the head with an empty bucket could knock someone out let alone seriously injure them or even kill them, but maybe I'm wrong.
Being a romantic you man Tommy was falling in love with the night, and Carrie, and loved Sue too. Let's face it the whole plan was born of idealism, and romance, and youth. Poor Tommy was dead the moment the second bucket, still half full of frozen blood struck his head.💔💔

Good call Hannah on calling out Carrie’s mom when Carrie was so confused and scared about the period, and at that point in the film we hadn’t even met her mom. Great reactions as always 👏 👏!
There are a lot of disturbing images in horror films that have stayed with me over the years.
But the image of Margaret comforting Carrie, only to literally stab her in the back.....and all but float towards her gleefully smiling, ready to end her life once and for all? 100% nightmare fuel.
The image of her floating towards her always freaked me out. It reminds me a bit of a scene in Perfect Blue.
My sister used to literally imitate that whole walk sometimes when she would come down the stairs lol...
I really love that Hannah cracks Ash up as much as she cracks US up. Like, what are even some of her comments?? She's pure comedy gold. But I love more that she has so much empathy. She GETS things so quickly. It's incredible.
Probably the most heartbreaking thing King ever wrote. A simple little story with huge emotion. Sissy Spacek is wonderful, glad you liked it.

It doesn't explain it in the film, but the reason why she looks like she's REALLY enjoying that shower in the beginning is because her mother only allowed her to take baths at home bc showers were sinful.

I watched Halloween and Freddy etc. with my brothers.I ended up having many nightmares about Michael Myers trying to kill me lol so yeah not the best idea watching stuff like that at that age,but as you say it was a different time. I actually don't watch horror movies anymore lol still love Carrie though.
@@paulinerobertson6836 I didn't sleep good for months after seeing Exorcist as a kid. I got to meet Linda Blair in 2018 and talk to her for a while and of course told her how she traumatized my childhood (she's heard that countless times) and I got my autographed photo of her as the Demon.
Tommy was doing it because he loves his girlfriend Sue. They were the only 2 people apart from the teacher who actually cared about Carrie.

Those horrible girls get what they had coming to them. I do feel bad for Tommy and Sue because they actually were only trying to help and be decent. I feel for Carrie as a traumatized kid - everything just spilled out. You guys should do the audiobook; it is read by Sissy Spacek.

Back when Travolta still had the Vinnie Barbarino, leader of the Sweat Hogs, hair from Welcome Back Kotter. He was still in the tv show when this movie was made.
William Katt (Tommy) later starred on a tv show called The Greatest American Hero from '81-83. His mother is Barbara Hale who played Della Street the secretary of Perry Mason in the old tv show. William made an appearance in the Perry Mason movies as the son of private detective Paul Drake who worked for Perry. He was also a private detective.
The good old days when you actually looked forward to watching your favorite TV shows on one of the three major networks. Kids nowadays don't know the meaning of anticipation. Everything is instant gratification.

32:47 - Hannah is absolutely correct here. Stephen King worked as a substitute teacher at a High School when he was writing this story, and he loosely based Carrie's character on two girls he knew back then.
Another fun fact: Brian De Palma and George Lucas were friends and held a joint casting process for both Star Wars and this film.
The girl who played Norma, PJ Soles (the girl with the red cap in every scene), was in every teen movie back then (from comedy to horror) and she has some cult celebrity status (as in cult movies).
This movie also has a 1999 sequel, and two remakes, which are also decent.
The split screen is classically awesome! They say she’s young enough, she’ll forget… yeah right! The actress Piper Laurie won the Best Supporting Oscar here! 🥇

Saw this a few times on release in theaters in 1976 - That final shock shot was THE TALK of my High School but still no one spoiled it
I really think that was the first real jump scare. I remember everyone in the theater shot up two feet out of their seats.
@@Seereene1it was the first modern jump scare, yes. It was so influential it inspired the (possibly more famous) jump scare at the end of Friday the 13th. The Friday the 13th filmmakers thought the Carrie jump scare was so good they wanted to emulate it.
Best reactors by far. So much personality, the way you feed off of each other and reading into the subject matter. Top tier!
Another great Stephen King movie I recommend is Dolores Claiborne. Not many know about it. Kathy Bates does a remarkable job in it.
Dolores Claiborne really is Stephen King's lost gem. It's a hard watch, but so well done.

I loved watching your reactions to Carrie as it's one of my favourite horror movies from the 1970s.
I've always seen Carrie as a tragic horror movie as this poor girl never catches a break. Carrie is the victim from beginning to end and not just from the bullying at school and the abuse at home but also from her telekinetic abilities as well.
The way I see it, when the pig's blood is dumped on her, Carrie went into a state of shock and hallucinated that everyone was laughing at her while hearing her mum's voice repeating in her head. From then on, she lost control and went into a trance while her telekinesis took over.
It's still sad that Carrie dies at the end in the prayer closet while her house crumbles around her. That St Sebastian statue still gives me the creeps with it's eyes all lit up like that.
Being with the gods whilst passing away wouldst actually be rather comforting. Carrie were within the right place at the right time.

FYI the children's book "Mathida" that was made into a movie was written in 1988. Stephen King wrote "Carrie" in 1974!

All this behavior was quite the norm in the 70s. This film was in 1976. I know it's a horror film but I always have found it heartbreaking and sad! One of my favorites of all time!

This is my favorite reaction ever! Fun fact: Sissy Spacek and Piper Laurie were nominated for Oscars for Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress for their roles in the film.
I wasn’t allowed to see this in the theatre when it came out (my parents were strict that way) but I borrowed the book from the library and read the story instead. Super powerful.
The movie revived Piper Laurie’s career (prior highlight was The Hustler). I loved her in The Faculty. If you haven’t seen it, I think you’d enjoy the shit out of it!

This is in my top 3 Stephen King books. Such an underrated movie too. The story is so good and almost believable.
This movie is one of my all time favorites because it resonates with me in a lot of ways.
It sounds weird but in many ways i was Carrie. I have been bullied myself throughout most of my childhood.
So i know what it is to be angry at the world, being immensly depressed and having suicidal thoughts.
I got past all of that obviously but i can relate to Carrie in soooo many ways.
Tommy died when the bucket fractured his skull btw. In the book by the time they're on the stage Carrie has like a telepathic kind of connection with Tommy so she knows he wasn't in on it and also that he died (it's actually the moment he dies that she totally snaps as he was the last positive connection she had to anyone*)
*she doesn't know the Sue wasn't in on it
First time watching you guys, and I loved it! I think Hannah is an empathetic genius, not only was she calling out what was going to happen, but she was so in tune with what the girl “clique” was about. When she looks at Ash and says, “ You don’t fully understand how horrific this is”, Ash like me, a man, we find that scenario horrible, but we would never fully comprehend how soul breaking that must be. A few points I’d like to make:
1. The slap given to Carrie by the teacher was completely reasonable, at the time, to help someone who was hysterical to snap out of it.
2. In the book, which I find to not be as good as the movie, Carrie destroys the town. The movie didn’t have the budget for that.
3. Both Sissy Spacek and Piper Laurie were nominated for Oscars for their performances, a very rare thing for a horror movie.
4. Yes, Stephen King’s wife made him rescue the book from the bin, and informed him that there were feminine hygiene product dispensers in girls locker rooms, something that he and I would guess most guys didn’t know.
All in all, you guys are excellent at this, I have subscribed. 👍👍👍👍

I was at school in Essex in 1976 and the teachers hit us, boys and girls. One boy had a wooden blackboard rubber thrown at his head. Scary times.
Hard to explain to someone now how it was back then. It was just normal life in public school.
One of the French teachers in my high school used to do that to any student who sell asleep in class. She was a tiny old lady but she had great aim, and she threw the erasers hard enough they they really stung when they hit you.
Same in Finland during the 50"s and 60's (and before that) My father grew up during that time and told us how the teachers would hit their fingers with wooden sticks or rulers if they misbehaved in any way. Even if some kid simply questioned a teacher, they were punished. This was especially common in southern ostrobothnia (a region in Finland) were kids were taught to be "tough" by basically physically @busing them. My father was violently @bused at home, so he says that the teachers "simply hitting them on the fingers" felt like nothing 😭

Sissy Spacek was incredible in this role. Totally nailed it. She's still super talented. She was great in this Stephen King show on Hulu called Castle Rock.

I watched this at the drive in. It was cold and at the time I had a boa constrictor I took everywhere. At the end I jumped so high I accidentally threw the snake to the roof and dropped my cigarette and started a fire in the blanket. There I was outside of car stomping out a fire in the cold while trying to calm down my snake. Great movie. 😂

Well, pigs are "unclean" in both Judaism and Islam, and possibly some other religions, hence pig's meat is neither kosher nor halal. Also, the Old Testament prohibits eating blood, which observant Jews still follow. Christians consider themselves exempt from that prohibition for the same reason they don't need to eat kosher. I'm not sure what the Muslim position is on eating blood.

In the book, King describes the bucket as being made of galvanized steel. That's a heavy duty metal and a long way from the garden store variety bucket. So, yes, Tommy would definitely have been knocked out.

I was bullied all through school until about 10th grade. Can confirm girls are HORRIBLE bullies. I used to actually wish my bullies would just hit me instead of verbally and emotionally bullying me, because at least then I could hit them back harder and maybe make them stop. This movie resonated with me so much, because while I never fantasized about doing anything to my bullies personally myself, I definitely did wish they would get a good dose of karma. I related to Carrie SO much, and this movie still hits hard even though I've been out of school for over 30 years. Invisible scars are still scars.
