Buying used blu rays and dvds like I do saves so much money. I couldn't imagine spending all that money on films, great video mate
🫡thank you. No vids now for a week I think 🤔 Got nothing more to say. Yet ☝️ Yeah I do respect people like your selves who aren’t caught up in this nonsense. I do. Have big talk vid planned for 2 weeks time that’s quite personal and looks at my habits for a different POV.
Absolutely loved this discussion. You touched on so many poignant points that I believe all collectors experience. I'm new to collecting, but I can relate to so many points you raised. That dopamine kick of having a package posted through the letter box. It becomes so addictive. Thanks for this video. It has made me pause for thought. I'll be more selective for sure going forward.
AJ, bang on as ever. I still rent discs from Cinema Paradiso which supports my look on it. The biggest thing being 'if I do like this, then when will i watch it again' question, whether that being having seen it in the cinema or with a disc rental. Not having stacks of films in a 'to watch' pile also means that there's no real pressure, other that returning to get the next one. In most cases, the delivery timing of the discs also means that I watch them around more import things like family time. Best thing I've done is not pre-ordering things unless I really want them.
We almost never go to the theater as they are too far and expensive. I only preorder what I know I will really like and would rewatch. Most recent was The Substance. I only have Nosferatu and Gladiator 2 preordered. I'm not even sure what the next release would be I would even consider to preorder atm.
Did you like Nosferatu. I’m still yet to see it. Heard mixed opinions. Theatre is expensive. What keeps me away is more the time . The journey to it and back is nigh on an hour either way. So add that to the films length and the ads etc. a lose a lot of time in the day and hate that now
Since I have cut back big time on buying blind buys, my pre-orders have also dropped big time. I will pre-order if the movie I want is getting a special edition that I fear might be sold out before I can get it. I only have one limited time pre-order for February right now from Deaf Crocodile. It's the French film Felidae that I have been wanting for my collection for over a decade now.
@stevebriffoutandabout5081 For me, yes. It's beautiful and it's cheaper to get the special edition. Felidae has been oop for so long, any early region 1 DVD copies are well over $80.
Ahh.ok. I walked into my local charity shop and accidentally bought the region one Criterian 2 disc collectors edition of Armageddon for £1. I notice that Amazon have said same on sale for £82. @rayleighsmedia7152
If you really want it then you have to. There will be titles I still pre order for sure. Because I want them. Rather than preordering because I’m caught up in a cycle of FOMO frenzy
Hi AJ, it may or not surprise you but I never pre-order movies (never have, never will) probably because I don’t do special editions or Steelbooks. If a film sells out then I will wait for it to wind up in CEX or later on eBay 🧐 plus I never get FOMO (its just not in my nature) I know that if there’s a movie I want, I will get it eventually (I’m very laid back and can wait as long as it takes…there are movies I’ve waited on for years 🧐 plus I rarely order films online…probably one in a hundred) I think your now on a better path AJ, your thought process is working for you as a collector 🤔 nice one mate, take care👍😃👍
Thanks Al. I’m going to do one more of this style vid. In 2 weeks probably. And it’s a big one - very personal about why I’ve collected as I have to nigh on 35 years. There’s been a lot of thinking and exploration that I’ve been doing. And conclusions drawn. ☝️
Cool, I look forward to hearing what you have to say, yeah we must have started collecting around the same time…which is more than half of our lives 😮 now that’s dedication for you 🤔
Those limited edition sets from the boutique labels I do pre-order from time to time. Because they do have a chance of selling out. Standard studio releases I do more rarely due to waiting for cheaper pricing. But there are titles I really want and want to have it day one. So pre-ordering is the easiest way to go. I don't live close to any stores to where I can take the time to run to store hoping to pick up.
I have to pre order the stuff I actually want because no stores in my City apart from CEX sell physical releases anymore and I certainly am not paying 3 times the price to a Scalper
@@markpugh6808 I live in Kansas here in US. The closest Walmart retailer is an hour away from me. If I want more choices for shopping, I need to drive about 3 hours. So ordering online is the way to go for me.
Like I said my friend I agree with you on some of the stuff but I had problems with DD’s and blueberries wearing out the dust ruining them so it wasn’t a matter of need. It was a matter of losing my collection or replacing it in the new format so take it for what it’s worth I appreciate all your all your all your suggestions on your video. Keep the good work up. Have a great day.
I only pre-order Doctor Who Blu-ray box-sets, classical Who, 2005-2025 reboot not for Me, i still love going to HMV and having a good hunt for Blu-rays, mostly Hammer Horror Films, that's all i need. Enjoyed your Video, All the Best.
Thanks Dave. As much as I like the older who’s. I decided to not go back before the Paul McGann movie. So I do have the current era. But not Ncuti. I do have Jodie whitakers run and the Tennant return specials. But for me Capaldi was really the end I do like him as the Doctor and his final episode. Kind of bringing it all full circle. I never wanted to step back to the older ones simply because I don’t know when I would ever get to revisit them
Hello AJ hoping you are going well. I have come across an annoying bad habit which has happened several times with my Pre orders with Amazon. I would get discounts applied to my Preorder but come shipping day they would send me an email saying they could not estimate when my order would be dispatched but I noticed If I was to cancel the order and pay a Higher price my order could be sent that day. would be curious to know if you have had similar experiences Regards Trevor.
Hi Trevor. Hope your well. That sounds like bad practice certainly. I havnt had the pleasure of coming across that exactly. But similarly I have had preorders in place. That they don’t ship but could buy on day of release for next day delivery. Forcing me to cancel and but. It’s that situation but for you with a discount applied. It’s a bit naughty isn’t it
I am getting to the stage where I question any new purchase. How often will I watch said film? I find most films lack the repeatability factor. Such a waste of money to have titles just sitting on a shelf collecting dust. Watch once and move on to the next new release.
@@ajsmovieplace Problem is there aren't enough hours in the day to sit around watching said films unless it is a film you love revisiting again and again you will find more than half your collection will be full of stuff you haven't watched for years
I very much agree with you. I am feeling increasingly pressured into buying some overpriced “special collector” Steelbook edition with a few bits of worthless PR tat (that I’m never going to look at and have no interest in) thrown in to help justify the price all because of a nurtured fear that it’s the only way to get my hands on a film which I only think I will want to own and, in actuality, may be disappointed such that I would then never rewatch it ever again. Historically, I used to be a regular cinema goer and would only pick up a physical copy of those movies I had enjoyed and knew I would enjoy a rewatch. However, it’s now such a costly exercise to get out to a cinema, I only get to see those films that I REALLY know I will enjoy. Then the majority of releases now seem to be posted for “limited edition” preorder and “sell out” before they even get to the cinema …. Without any apparent intent or expectation of a standard (more economic) slip cover release in the works. I can understand why some collectors want to dedicate their lives to steelbooks … they are a nicer thing to handle (though most of the ones I pick up from CEX are nearly always damaged) … but it is the movie I want … not a fancy case with unwanted tat tucked in. Even here.. I say “want” … I do like to think I try and stay selective in my choices … I do want the upgrade to the 4k Kill Bill movies, but it’s costly enough at £25 each for a slip cover release … that’s still £50 for the pair .. £70 for the 2 Steelbook versions is way too much. Indeed, for a pair of back-catalogue movies which get a 4k upscale to support streaming/broadcast anyway (and which seem to have been throttled to a 2k upscale with the benefits over a regular Blu Ray being limited to HDR treatment) … I would have thought £30 for the 2 movies as a boxed set would have been much more sellable and (overall) profitable to a wider market place ?? So .. normally I wouldn’t feel the need to preorder if I had confidence a title was going to be released in due course … I would be able to carry on as normal and collect titles I knew I actually wanted. However, I am now suffering anxiety that I will miss the opportunity to be able to acquire a title I only “might” want unless I preorder an extravagant package which I can’t really afford. My senses tell me we’re being manipulated to ensure all production of a given title in any form of physical media is guaranteed to be fully sold to ensure the media companies are not left with any dead stock which they are forced to warehouse pending some future potential sales they cannot be certain of. Such dead stock eats into their bottom line and, therefore, profits and investor dividends. Maybe the best solution is simply to embrace the situation and become a scalper!! … Buy all those Limited Editions as soon as they appear for preorder and (with no intention of ever watching them, flog them on at inflated prices … works for CEX where it’s still often (though not always) cheaper to buy a 4k disc new and sealed from HMV than it is to buy a scratched and fingered used copy from CEX (and have you tried to claim back on their supposedly bulletproof warranty as a result of a scratch?).
My favorite is when I pre order something on day 1 and it still doesn’t ship. Meanwhile the rest of the world gets them and I’m just sitting there waiting…. If I had a store near me to go directly to and buy, I’d do it in a heartbeat. But unfortunately I can only get my movies online
@ man… I wish I had a store that close!! Those were the days. Great video btw, love seeing other collectors perspective on the state of physical media. From the background alone, you got some great stuff!!
Remember the pre-order guy? He used to show up on your live streams and get mad about you cancelling pre-orders. When you blocked him, he'd make a new profile and come right back. 😆 He must have moved on.

The question: I just watched the movie on streaming service, when am I going to watch it again? For me, I re-watch my favorite movies every three to five years. The rest, maybe never. It's insurance knowing I own it and have access anytime. Ownership is expensive in many ways.
great vid with great points, il b honest I only ever pre ordered a steelbook if I really like the film. otherwise I'm pretty old school, il wait until it actually comes out or wait till they go on sale.. but I'm with u with deep blue sea, I really enjoyed that and would like that steelbook.. tnx
I am definitely going to be more careful in what I get on 4K or Blu-ray not going to spend stupid money on things I do get what you mean and I think you're right .
Good for you mate, I have done exactly the same thing. Spent a lot last year, especially the months leading up to Christmas. I had a couple of vinyl preorders arrive over the last couple of weeks and I now just have one outstanding preorder. Already paid for (£35) and doesn't come out until May. I will be ordering Uncle Buck on 4k in a couple of weeks as I don't have a physical copy. I will be cherry picking the rest of the year. I will probably get the standard 4k edition of Dirty Harry when that comes out but not the more expensive steelbook or Collectors Edition. Look after yourself. Gaz.
That latter part of the year is already top heavy isn’t it. January for me was an eye opener. It was a reality slap 👋 in a sense. Uncle buck is a great film. And I get picking it up if you don’t already have it. I would do the same. But as an upgrade. No. I need to stop a lot of that and just get that much I really feel I want to upgrade
Needed Insurrection to complete my Star Trek movie collection on blu ray, found a used one on ebay for £4 ! I"ll watch it then it"ll sit on a shelf for 12 months before a rewatch 🤷♂
My observations of all these recent conversations seems to me that the only way to break away from this pattern of behaviour is become a watcher, not a collector. Join cinema paradiso, hire a broad brush of films and buy a distinct few, key films.
Yes they can cancel one another out. Sometimes I will rewatch a film prior to its upgrade release to 1. Ask if it’s worth upgrading and 2. To get the idea of buying again out of my head as I just watched it
Watch the original Nosferatu and the remake with Klaus Kinski, then you will get an idea if you will like it. It’s pretty good but the silent original is by far the best version. The only Blu Rays I pre order these days are the Classic Doctor Who special editions, but I did recently pre order Captain Kronos Vampire Hunter direct from Hammer Films which is a lovely edition and received it a week early.
Excellent video AJ. The only time that I pre-ordered any physical disc media was, region 1 dvd back in 1997. I could watch a movie on dvd before it came out at the cinema. A change of financial circumstances put paid to that foolishness. Now-a-days I rent before I buy. And I only buy if I know I'm going to watch the film more than five times in the time I have left on this mortal coil. I think the current situation with pre-orders is born out of physical discs only accounting for about 10% of the market, and the movie companies are trying to get as much money as they can, out of a shrinking audience, before it disappears altogether.
Yep that’s exactly what they are doing. Milk us as much as they can. I remember the days of getting the dvd before its cinema release. Made me feel special 😂🤦🏻
I want those slips. It’s the only to make sure I get them. It has caused issues though. Inglorious Bastards as an example. $65.27. That’s what they charged me. The day it came out it dropped to $32.65. Half the price. Plus I already owned the Universal release. I just reordered and returned the more expensive one. I got a refund but I had to go and drop it off somewhere. You need to watch the prices like a hawk. Preorder guarantee can backfire from Amazon. Could have missed the good price. It was out of stock later that day.
I do pre order films. But usually have no more than 4 or 5 tops. Sometimes you have no choice. Take mando3 and ashoka. I wanted them but took my time to pre order them because of the price and the est date of may release. I ordered them 3 weeks ago and saw the release date is a lot nearer feb. I managed to order mando 3 from hmv. Ashoka however nowhere had it except amazon had it available. I ordered it but know full well they wont honour it and i have missed it. 3 times they have done it in the past even on titles many months in advance.
Amazon are doing that a lot now. Those releases are expensive. And I off set that cost by selling the Blu-ray Discs ( I only need the 4Ks so …. ) It can get me amongst 50% of the cost back. Hope Amazon come through for you this time with Ashoka
@ Thanks, its funny that when they were first announced i questioned whether to get them at all. Mando 3 was mediocre and ashoka although it was all right I did not love. As time went on though maybe it was the feeling of missing out and not being able to get hold of them that got me. I have mando 1&2 and Andor. I guess thats the price you have to pay on certain limited items.
The only reason I will pre-order anything is when it's one of my favorite movies, and it only has a limited edition with the premium packaging. This past year, I have pre-ordered very few titles, maybe 5 or 6. But I will say that if I had unlimited income, I would probably pre-order everything because I have missed out on some of these titles because the studios are limiting them on purpose so they do sell out, that way people freak out and always pre-order so the don't miss out, FOMO! It is real.
I only preorder Doctor Who these days. I would only consider buying a steel book of something I actually love. Shelf space is at a premium and that can be more stressful than FOMO for me.
The space issues come to us all. With Doctor who - I’m Assuming your getting the original Stuff as it’s released - what about the new Ncuti stuff ? I didn’t even watch the Xmas special. I think Doctor is over for me.
FOMO = Fear Of Missing Out Pre order windows often open several months before release date. Sometimes that date is then put back. From a manufacturing point of view they can determine what quantity to manufacture to reduce waste & ensure profit margin. With vinyl, unless it's Mo Fi customers are taking a risk that the pressing quality may be poor as they normally don't know where it's being pressed.
Steel books only get those if price is a few dollars difference. I’ve done a few blind buys, and say wasn’t happy with one. Usually buy movies I’m familiar with. Do go to thrift stores and run across a lot of Blu-ray’s cost around $4, dvds $1. Do check for scratches before buying. Movie upgrade, depends, for me there is a big difference from dvd to Blu-ray, some movies look better in 4k. Batman 89 in 4k looks very good. Wait for some time to pass, prices do drop. I’ve done a preorder for wicked for my daughter, and gladiator 2 sine I have the first one. Sometimes better to get blu-ray box set, like terminator 6 film and Craig 007 collection, both of those box sets under $20.(blu-ray). Every now and then need common sense.
Of course, if all the collectors curved thier enthusiasm for pre- ordering and buying any old rubbish. We'd just be left with dvd. No bad thing in itself. But i'd rather have the choice of which format I buy a film in.
It is amazing how they suddenly start reprinting these Limited Edition pre-order 4K Steel books once they are "sold out" and all over eBay. 4K Terminator and Deadpool Wolverine as an example. Also reprinting Limited Editions Steelbook s 12 to 18 months later eg Fifth Element, Ghostbusters, Starship Troopers, Gladiator etc. Definitely taking us for unts
for me i work i don't have a local hmv nearby soi normally pre order most of the films or shows. i never go in blind i at least seek out a trailer or when its a show i've watched for example star wars ahsoka loved it know i want it. I actually prefer the new steelbooks for the kill bill 1 and 2 . good video
I pre-order limited editions of movies & shows if I know they're ones I'll love and if there's not another standard unlimited release available or slated to be available later. I pre-ordered Sonic 3. That's one I know I'll love rewatching many times in the years to come. As for, say "Reagan" , I thought it was a decent movie, but probably wouldn't watch it more than maybe once more. So, I skipped getting it.
@ajsmovieplace standard 4K + blu-ray + digital. Comes with a slipcover. I like the art on the cover better than the steelbooks. Plus it costs less than the steelbooks.

It’s is crazy isn’t it. Good call on dressed to kill. I do have a German media book and havnt watched it yet either. And you’re right. You don’t need day one. You need to prioritise real world things first. Look at those folk in the community who admitted getting into debt over the hobby. A bad place to be. Good luck sticking to your budget you set. Let me know how that goes. I will have my monthly pick up vid next week where I will see if I stick to mine.
This is true and the was my logic and justification for a long long time. But I used as justification for movies I would never have gone to see at the cinema as it is. 🤷🏻♂️ ( I cover that in a couple weeks in a big vid ) But I think with the cinema. It is more about the experience too.
It's become such a scam. These companies only make a limited amount, people pre-order, many times selling it out before the actual release date, and like 20% of those buyers put it on eBay for exorbitant gouged prices. Sometimes the company releases a more standard version of the movie and sometimes they don't. If you didn't get it within that tiny window and actually have a life and a job, then you're just gonna have to live without it, unless you wanna pay $100+ for a $30 item off ebay. An example of this for me would be a 4k release of The Neon Demon. I had NO IDEA the sh*t was even released on 4k but apparantly it was and the only way i can get it now is to pay a ludicrous price on eBay. Total horsesh*t., The entire issue with Nosferatu is the biggest horsesh*t I've ever heard. The stupid sh*t is still out in theaters for God's sake! And the physical copy is now UNABLE to be obtained?? Months before it's even released? We are being scammed.

Doubt Impact, China O'brien and Kickboxer are the only pre orders I have ever bought.
Buying used blu rays and dvds like I do saves so much money. I couldn't imagine spending all that money on films, great video mate
🫡thank you.
No vids now for a week I think 🤔
Got nothing more to say. Yet ☝️
Yeah I do respect people like your selves who aren’t caught up in this nonsense.

Thank you. I’m glad it had an impact
So add that to the films length and the ads etc. a lose a lot of time in the day and hate that now
That Kill Bill steelbook of yours is beautiful and the films look great on bluray. Space saved and money saved, it's a win win.
100%.
Until I pulled it I didn’t realise it was a double pack. I thought I had 2 individual steels.
Plus only Vol 1 is any good Vol 2 is very disappointing
Your spot on mate, thank you for your enlightenment. 33:25
Thank you
Since I have cut back big time on buying blind buys, my pre-orders have also dropped big time. I will pre-order if the movie I want is getting a special edition that I fear might be sold out before I can get it. I only have one limited time pre-order for February right now from Deaf Crocodile. It's the French film Felidae that I have been wanting for my collection for over a decade now.
But is that special edition really needed? Rayleigh.
But for me Capaldi was really the end
I do like him as the Doctor and his final episode.
It’s a bit naughty isn’t it
That's terrible practice.
@@stevebriffoutandabout5081 awful ain’t it
Amazon are well known for this kind of crap even cancelling pre orders due to not having stock from overselling
I am getting to the stage where I question any new purchase. How often will I watch said film? I find most films lack the repeatability factor. Such a waste of money to have titles just sitting on a shelf collecting dust. Watch once and move on to the next new release.
It’s certainly true.
I may have to look at my shelves and ask when was the film last watched.
Bet it will be an eye opener
That's why I rent before I buy.
Most of my stuff now comes orderd online. I do have a hmv not 2 miles away. Just can’t be bothered going. 🤷🏻♂️
@ man… I wish I had a store that close!! Those were the days. Great video btw, love seeing other collectors perspective on the state of physical media. From the background alone, you got some great stuff!!

The question: I just watched the movie on streaming service, when am I going to watch it again? For me, I re-watch my favorite movies every three to five years. The rest, maybe never. It's insurance knowing I own it and have access anytime. Ownership is expensive in many ways.
great vid with great points, il b honest I only ever pre ordered a steelbook if I really like the film. otherwise I'm pretty old school, il wait until it actually comes out or wait till they go on sale.. but I'm with u with deep blue sea, I really enjoyed that and would like that steelbook.. tnx
Would be nice to get a steel for that. But alas is just an amaray releases with some bits - give it 6 months. Be reissued with a steelbook 😂
I am definitely going to be more careful in what I get on 4K or Blu-ray not going to spend stupid money on things I do get what you mean and I think you're right .
Thanks Roger.
Always appreciate you tuning in and commenting.
That soon ? 😂.
It’s one I normally skip over now 😂
My observations of all these recent conversations seems to me that the only way to break away from this pattern of behaviour is become a watcher, not a collector. Join cinema paradiso, hire a broad brush of films and buy a distinct few, key films.
Agree 💯% with your observations. 👍🏻
Yep, that's what I do.
The next conversation piece should be ' are watching and collecting two opposing forces that has the potential of cancelling each other out?' Discuss
🤔
Yeah I’ve never seen the original to be fair. 👍👍
Yep special. I was copying them onto vhs and lending out to my work collegues. That was the wrong behaviour for sure.@ajsmovieplace
And I off set that cost by selling the Blu-ray Discs ( I only need the 4Ks so …. )
It can get me amongst 50% of the cost back.
Hope Amazon come through for you this time with Ashoka
@
Thanks, its funny that when they were first announced i questioned whether to get them at all.
With Doctor who - I’m
Assuming your getting the original
Stuff as it’s released - what about the new Ncuti stuff ?
I didn’t even watch the Xmas special. I think Doctor is over for me.
FOMO = Fear Of Missing Out
Pre order windows often open several months before release date.
That’s a fair point actually.
"What could I do with £260" hide it from the wife 😅

Of course, if all the collectors curved thier enthusiasm for pre- ordering and buying any old rubbish. We'd just be left with dvd.
No bad thing in itself. But i'd rather have the choice of which format I buy a film in.
A J, Dunne tv show was very good enjoyed it, but would I watch it so soon again, maybe not, love your videos brilliant all the time.
That’s good to hear.
But I am hearing people say it isn’t. But it subjective isn’t it.
I suspect. In a years time I may still not have seen it 😂
It is amazing how they suddenly start reprinting these Limited Edition pre-order 4K Steel books once they are "sold out" and all over eBay.
Some films if you watch the trailer you get all the action bits. No need to buy.
@stevebriffoutandabout5081 yeah that's true
Thanks Chris.
I do have a HMV close. But rarely visit it
Isn’t that true
@ajsmovieplace I get you if I had one nearby I wouldn't pre order as much as I do
I pre-order limited editions of movies & shows if I know they're ones I'll love and if there's not another standard unlimited release available or slated to be available later. I pre-ordered Sonic 3. That's one I know I'll love rewatching many times in the years to come. As for, say "Reagan" , I thought it was a decent movie, but probably wouldn't watch it more than maybe once more. So, I skipped getting it.
Makes sense. Did you go for a standard sonic or one of the 2 steels ?
@ajsmovieplace standard 4K + blu-ray + digital. Comes with a slipcover. I like the art on the cover better than the steelbooks. Plus it costs less than the steelbooks.

Total horsesh*t.,
The entire issue with Nosferatu is the biggest horsesh*t I've ever heard. The stupid sh*t is still out in theaters for God's sake! And the physical copy is now UNABLE to be obtained?? Months before it's even released? We are being scammed.
