@@fraser46 Yep, and I read a similar comment he made about Vinnie. It's not a contest, but in my book, Vinnie took over the title of World's Greatest Drummer when Buddy Rich died.
Watch Frank's hands at all times. You can see that this is really a conducted improvisation. When Ed Mann starts playing the bells, FZ's hand is off the left of the screen (which is where Ed Mann is standing if you have the full DVD). The drum hit after Mauricio Kagel is conducted too. Frank is playing the whole band just like an instrument; it's amazing to behold.
The saddest thing to me is when people see something like this and automatically assume that the people involved are using drugs. If you can't let your imagination roam free without the use of narcotics, you need to rethink your existence. There's no trick to using drugs; the real pleasure is in figuring out how to do it naturally and not rely on chemical assistance.
I love how that for the uninitiated (me), EVERYTHING in my brain is currently telling me I'm watching a "shreds" video. Except for that fantastic disco groove.

@@TheColbles2009 Honestly, I did give that some thought, and I don't see that. He's absolutely not manipulative about his demand for a seal call solo - that would be if he told Vinnie that doing seal calls would make him a better drummer, that it was in his (Vinnie's) own interest somehow to make weird animal noises. What he does is the straightest imaginable way, "do a solo with seal calls". 0% manipulation there. Narcissistic - I think a narcissist naturally makes everything about himself and social status, so that "act like an animal" would automatically be a humiliation, meant to increase his own status, while creating a boundary from the person on the receiving end. That doesn't seem to be the case. Vinnie certainly didn't see it as humiliating, in fact he clearly sees it as a musical challenge. Frank doesn't act as if on a higher level there whatsoever - he joins in, becomes part of the seal call performance with his smoke show - while calling his own part "really cheap". IMO, joining in on the side of the lower status person is absolutely not what narcissists do in a humiliation situation. Anything I'm missing? I think the confusion comes from the fact that Zappa was definitely a controlling, demanding person, and that he wasn't shy of conflict whatsoever - but if you look at it closely, you'll be hard-pressed to find just one example where his demands or a conflict involving him was about status, "putting someone in their right place", overcoming his own insecurities by means of self-enlargement, as would be typical for a narcissist. With him, conflicts were almost exclusively about something that he clearly considered to be infinitely more valuable than himself, or anyone else: I think he truly didn't give a rat's anus about what anyone thought of him, as long as he could keep doing music.
I was trying to imagine Dave Weckl taking over from Vinnie in this situation - Nope!!! I just CAN'T imagine Dave Weckl immitating an eroticised seal while playing drums!!! Oh well...
I really want a glasses frame like Vinnie's. Seriously. Anybody knows where I can get one of these? P.D.: I thought he played trad grip since forever...
Zappa is just too much for me...I don't have taste for any of his music...I know he's some sort of genius, but can't really grasp any of his artful ideas...I'm probably doomed to the gates of Music's Hell, poor me.
He was a fan and just enjoyed getting the best musicians in the world and making them do hilarious and at the same time amazing shit, and he didn't give a fuck what the status quo thought. But he was also a master engineer, and master tinkerer, a master musical theorist, and sometimes played some of the best and most sick sounding electric guitar ever recorded. If Frank is playing a guitar solo it is instantly recognisable, and it sounds absolutely massive.
@Bread& Butter .... That ram it up the poop chute shit is for people like you that take music to fucken seriously.... He basically used that comedy music to pay for the serious music that he really wanted to play that nobody wants to hear... Like his sinclavier music or the yellow shark orchestra music... Then again, I like Coltrane so what the fuck do I know?...
Why people suggest One Size Fits All to Zappa beginners I just do not know, but really give Weasels a good few listens, and the Mike Brecker version of Black Napkins off of You Can’t ...vol 6.
This was the moment at which Vinnie sealed his reputation as one of the all-time drumming greats.
He got the High Secret Seal of the Stonecutters, then...
punishing
Or, Klumed it.
give this guy a medal !
Vinnie "sealed" his reputation, get it? I know, that was bad 😌
that disco seal call groove is one of the most beautifully syncopated grooves ive ever heard

Frank cuts him off right when he really starts grooving...jerk
i've replayed that groove so many times. vinnie is a wizard
I was thinking that as well. And the sound of his snare? Just freaking amazing.
@@chrisdiel706 right?? It's insanely good!!!
The most remarkable thing about this clip is Vinnie using a matched grip....
This is what happens when a rock band DOESNT take drugs lol

Best drummer ever: Vinnie Colaiuta, period.
Damn those drums sounded amazing
Frank and Vinnie together were a force of Nature. This is true comedy. Thanks for posting.
I think I read somewhere that Frank though Vinnie was the only drummer who understood what he was doing. You can really see it here

Vinnie’s version of “disco” is hilarious...I’m trying to think of a single disco tune laced with 32nd notes and high speed kick patterns.
Tommy Mars is simply phenomenal!
With all that talent, just imagine if he ever focused on making good music.
Hearing Tommy Mars speak like normal person in an interview after watching this is mindblowing.
I was humming this song in my head just the other day.
How do you humm this? 😂
Whole video is awesome......Vinnie's glasses = so badass.
This is hilarious and amazing.
Great improv Frank & Vinnie. Best seal call drum solo in history!
Purely Experimental. It's good to let the steam out every so often...and Music is a GREAT medium to do so.
How right u r
Is all this worth my precious time & energy??
Hell yeah!!
Freedom of speech!
Freedom of art!

On top of that Zappa's music was too hard to perform while high so doing drugs while touring with Zappa was out of the question

seal crazy.
My favorite baby seal!
People always told me that Zappa's musicians possess a certain amount of _zeal,_ but I must have misunderstood.
