I've been doing some research for new windows because my neighbors dogs bark 24/7. Definitely looking into laminated windows. Great demonstration! Thank you!!
@@jenniferjones2722 yup. We did the same and submitted six hours of the dogs barking non stop, most of the time, or every few minutes. Law enforcement and animal wardens in much of Texas will just tell a neighbor to lower the noise but won't warn and fine which would end it. Today it seems like rude neighbors and nuisances are seen as a normal thing which I am sure you don't feel the same like I do. In Texas, they want to make a nuisance problem a private matter so you pay a lawyer. I think with leasing of homes and with Airbnb with home owners that own they want you to be the apartment manager while you own. Thanks for the great demonstration. Is the laminated glass triple glaze? I think it's double right? Also, is there a difference between acoustic glass and laminated glass, are the same?
What kind of roof insulation do you have? I'm looking into sound proofing my windows, but my understanding is that it probably won't be enough if I don't also at least insulate my roof. And maybe I'll have to do something with my walls as well.
Doubtful, as also the air gap matters. Double glazing has around 16mm of air gap, triple glaze has 12. So you win some and lose some. Also triple glaze with laminate will be extremely heavy, upwards of 100 pounds for a simple window. Over time might sag. My balcony door with triple glazing is over 250 pounds.
It depends pretty much on the frequency you want to block. High or middle frequencies like from this small radio are easy to block. But if you have deep frequencies like the base from a speaker it gets a pretty different story. It also depends on the glass how thick it is. On the space between the glass and other things. So it might not been as easy as shown here...
That's right! Low frequency noises are hardest to block and often what people are the most annoyed by (road traffic and low flying planes for example). Laminate glass always performs better than annealed glass at the same thickness, but there are a number of other factors that can play in. Some windows are tested and given an STC rating which is a helpful 3rd party rating that can be helpful in comparing options.
I came back to give you a thumbs up. Good quality video here thanks for the demo. Although im wondering why is your soundmeter showing 43 dB on a quiet room? Seems a lot to me but im no expert.
I am a DJ, and an engineer by trade. The problem with this video is that it doesn't address the low frequencies which make the "boom" "boom" that really bothers people. This is because today's music is heavily concentrated on the lower frequencies. These frequencies travel and react at a different speed than the higher frequencies. Humans do not have the ability to hear these frequencies, we more feel them. Which also makes them more difficult to cancel out. I suggest another field test with a 12" sub woofer outside the window and play some house music or rap music and repost this video. I like the idea, and I am interested in purchasing this or a similar product for one of my clients. I would like to see some more closely related field tests to my application. Hi, we're both inner and outer panes laminated or just one side? If just one side, then which? Inner or outer, and does it matter with regards to sound?
Hi thanks for the video, very instructice. were these different glasing installed on the same frame? And what is the thickness of the glasing? I want to replace a normal double glazing with better sound insulation glazing. I have sash windows, so i guess i would need to recalibrate the weights in the sashes? Thanks a lot!
I wasn't very impressed with the "reduction" when it was a leaf blower making the noise but it was definitely appreciable with the speaker & music. It seems like it would be worth looking into. The sound nuisance I need to mitigate is a nearby road with fairly constant traffic.
It’s different in person it’s not even so much that it takes all the noise away but certain frequencies bother us more than others tire makers do the same thing they can’t completely eliminate the sound but they can make the sound that the tires do you make the less harsh if that makes sense
Thanks for this video, no one has provided this info out of all the window guys I’ve talked to. What brand are you working with in this video? I’d like to look up the technical specs on it to compare with your presentation.
Spoiler: the first two windows kept the sound down to 64 db. The laminate glass was 57 db. Decibels are not linear, so a 7 decibel reduction is actually much more than an 11% reduction.
Thanks for actually testing sound transmission. When researching I found so many misleading places that said they weren't worth it in terms of energy savings - but that's not why many consider these windows.
I live on a very noisy road and the double glazing that was already in is about as much use as a chocolate tea pot for keeping out the road noise, I am at the end of my teather with it and have spent days on the internet trying to sort out fact from fiction and I think I will be putting in double-glazing with laminate glass as I want as much sound reduction as possible, I don't much care about saving a few pounds a year on energy reduction, I want noise reduction.
@skylineRichmond can you please tell me if the your window frame is aluminium or PVC? Someone said aluminium outproforms PVC in terms of soundproofing. What is the thickness of your laminated pane and what is the space between the 2 panes? Thank you.
Hi Grace,The frame in this test in PVC with foam inside the frame. The laminated panes are 5/32nds of an inch, the air gap is 5/8th of an inch. If constructed the same PVCs should outperform aluminum in terms of sound proofing because it is a softer material and therefore won't carry the vibrations as well. But there are a lot of other factors that can come into play such as how air-tight the window is overall and if anything is put between the aluminum of vinyl walls to help deaden vibrations and insulate better. A well construction aluminum window could certainly out perform a poorly constructed PVC/Vinyl window and vice versa.
Great demonstration of the differences between the types of windows. I wonder if there is such a thing as triple pane, (double) laminated windows. That maybe too thick.
No. However there is double laminated glass. Which is extremely heavy (even single layer laminated lass is very heavy). Anyway after one layer of laminated, you have already obtained the most benefit. After that the benefits decease and cost increase dramatically.
Has anything changed in the last 8 years? Companies now seem to be saying that a thicker layer of glazing on the outside with a thinner layer on the inside is most effective as it breaks up the sound waves.
Whatever happened to rakes and brooms. Often the .... leaf blower isn't any faster, sometimes they are slower. I live by a main road and the noise from loud exhausts is unbearable. I was considering triple pane windows but that laminate glass is really impressive. Does anyone have any experience with laminate glass in a situation like mine? Does it perform well and how much did it cost you?
I live on a main road and replaced 5 windows (including a large bay window in my lounge) from the old normal double gazed upvc windows with laminated class 2 windows and it has made a huge difference the noise from the road is only really heard when I'm laid in bed at night (due to the house being silent) but in the day I can see the cars driving by but hear nothing. The total cost was £3,260 Inc VAT which I was happy with as the fitting was all done in one day and they came back the following day to apply trims and silicone them. Well worth it in opinion
Well done Sir. Great test would love to know how this performance is against extremely annoying low flying commercial planes ✈️. Or would this be similar to the boom box u tried. Every one tries to sell expensive double glazing in my area. Your laminated concept is a game changer. Thanks. Regards Victor..😊😊😊
A low flying commercial plan is going to be more similar to the leaf blower in the video. A low frequency noise like a plane engine will be harder to block.
So does that mean that it can not be blocked? We are working on a house on approach to a major airport. Want glass that will block at least 70% of the sound . In the walls and roof we can . With the glass is there a way?
Hiii Great video)) so can we laminate glass windows? and what is the best brand that we can use to laminate my windows as I live near highway & it has been a living nightmare. If you can help me with a brand & i think we need a professional company to come? thank you & highly appreciate your reply
Hi, thanks very much for the video, helpful and informative. Do you happen to know the thickness of the laminated glazing and the PVB interlayer, as well as the thickness of the low-E glazing? I am just wondering if a casement window would provide an even better performance for sound reduction. Thanks!
Unfortunately I do not know the thicknesses for each of those layers. I know the Low-E glazing is applied at a microscopic layer so it doesn't darken the glass much. A casement window will often be able to use the same type of glass as a double hung window, even then sound proofing may be improved by a casement window as they are typically more air-tight and overall air-tightness will play into sound proofing. A few manufacturers for casement and tilt and turn windows make their glass thicker than one could with a double hung window. If you use the right kind of glass for sound proofing that should give you best overall result.
The glass in this video is technically 3 panes. Laminate glass by definition will have 2 pieces of glass with a laminated membrane between them. In this window only the outer piece of glass is laminated, and the interior is simply annealed glass.
@@skylineRichmond Thank you for your reply and your video. It is helpful for us trying to see what our options are. From what I have learnt. The thickness of the glass is one of the most important factors. So how thick was the laminated glass in this video? And also how big was the gap between the 2 panes of glass. There are also types of laminated glass which have a thicker inner layer which helps reduce sound more. Were you using a special laminated glass? How thick was the laminated glass used? Cheers
That would make your glass "laminated". But laminate glass refers to a thick laminate that is placed between at least 2 pieces of glass. Putting a plastic sheet on with a blow dryer would not give you any kind of noticeable sound dampening.
I always love it when channels use the decibel meter. Thumbs up for being a professional!!

One good thing about low E glass is that will also block some EMF radiation.
Love the little test at the end. I’m sold. Now to get my landlord to install laminate glass in my bedroom… hmm.. 😂
Where can I get window with laminated glass? Most of them is IGU
One very confusing thing is he mentioned argon with the laminated glass - why would you need argon if it is single glazed?
Wonder what is the stc rating on this window.
Great video. Where can I order these windows?
Sir, could you tell me the thickness of that laminated glass pane used in this video please?
What about triple pane laminated glass?
Windows and information are awesome! (video editing, needs work) Still deserves a thumbs up. tho! :)
If you can help me with a brand & i think we need a professional company to come? thank you & highly appreciate your reply
you cannot laminate your own windows, this is something that must be done in a factory. ua-cam.com/video/cgFAzJNthZs/v-deo.html
To summarize, open glass: 86db, double pane 64db, triple pane 63db, laminated glass 57db
6:00 We can yell if we want to / they won't hear our victory cry -- safety glass
Doesnt explain the thickness of the laminated glass which is important. 2 panes of laminated?
The glass in this video is technically 3 panes. Laminate glass by definition will have 2 pieces of glass with a laminated membrane between them. In this window only the outer piece of glass is laminated, and the interior is simply annealed glass.
@@skylineRichmond is it 6.38mm,8.38mm laminated or more?
@@skylineRichmond Thank you for your reply and your video. It is helpful for us trying to see what our options are. From what I have learnt. The thickness of the glass is one of the most important factors. So how thick was the laminated glass in this video? And also how big was the gap between the 2 panes of glass. There are also types of laminated glass which have a thicker inner layer which helps reduce sound more. Were you using a special laminated glass? How thick was the laminated glass used? Cheers

Great video.. appreciated.. I am going for sound proofing of my home windows and now I will definitely go for laminated glass.
Mubarak, did you get your new windows? Did you achieve sound reduction? Laminated glass? Which brand?
Great Video! Thank you for making this!
Couldn't you just take your double pane sash window and put the plastic sheeting on with a blow dryer. Would that make your window laminate?
That would make your glass "laminated". But laminate glass refers to a thick laminate that is placed between at least 2 pieces of glass. Putting a plastic sheet on with a blow dryer would not give you any kind of noticeable sound dampening.
skylineRichmond Thanks for the reply.
Great presentation. Thank you
Is there an air on In the house?
Can you put a fire truck and 8 police cars?
How thick is the glass
For even better results try double pane laminated glass with a 3-6" air gap in between. You won't even hear 4th of July fireworks.
An ex-burglar said he recommended getting laminates glass so that's a bonus
I came from the same reddit post
I saw that post, that's why I'm here.
Pity the victim of a home fire incident wasn't able to provide his disapproval
Why is that?
@@foreskingaming6845 Hi, could you please post the Reddit link for that?
Best way to kill traffic noise is to get rid of the window
