Technically, any chemical that we add to a food is a food additive. Dr Nynke Kramer, Associate Professor of Toxicology at Wageningen University & Research, explains what food additives are in this video.

Hi! Food additives are only added in tiny amounts to perform a specific function in food (e.g. an emulsifier to mix oil and water) and are thoroughly assessed by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) for their safety. Perhaps the issue is not the use of food additives (many of which can be naturally present in foods) but the consumption of foods high in sugar, saturated fat and salt?
