My 9 yr old daughter got this in September of 2019 after receiving an ear infection. Nobody knew what was going on as her condition worsened. She exhibited nearly all the symptoms you discussed. It was a very scary time for us as the doctors didn't know what was going on. She was hospitalized to 8 days, 3 of which in the ICU. THANKFULLY Dr. Vinay Puri saved her. He walked into her room, looked at her for 5 minutes and diagnosed her on the spot. Put her on 800mg of steroids per day and by the next day, she woke up for the first time in 4 days. It was only for 15 minutes, but it was enough to give us hope that she was going to pull through. Thank you for this video, even though I am no doctor, but it definitely helped me understand what went on with her that day.

My son was diagnosed with ADEM at 2 years old, his last vx was in March 2022, his ADEM episode was in October 2022. After all of the labs he was only positive for rhinovirus. He presented with fever, decreased LOC, Dysphonia, Dysarthria, and seizures. He had a lumbar tap after his MRI to ensure they could start the IV steriods and the CSF came back clear and was MOG negative and MRI did show ADEM with two lesions in his frontal lobe. after the IV steroids for 5 days he spent the next 8 months in PT OT and ST. He has made a full recovery, I wish there was more information on ADEM, but I just wanted to make other aware that ADEM can also be cause by a simple common cold like my son.
what does it mean "8 months pt ot st ? my son stopped today corticosteroid therapy of 5 days, he cant still walk normally, but he eats alone and speaks well. did you use immunoglobina ?

Hi Sarah. My daughter, who is 25, is going through this now. She is currently being diagnosed with MOG. Her symptoms showed in Sept of ‘23. It was treated with high dose of steroids and she got better. But now, January of ‘24, she showed new lesions and her neurologist wants to do the IVIG, which we are currently going through. Her original symptoms back in Sept. where speech slur and motor skills issues. The current symptoms are minimal, but noticeable, speech slurs. I have her on a 99% plant based diet avoiding high sugars and red meat. Hopefully all works out and I can share her journey to help others. I am considering going to the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota, which has a MOGAD center. I am open for any questions anyone has. I want to help out as much as possible.

I lost the use of my right arm and and leg and my left arm and leg just feels hot all the time. Im 29 and didnt know how rare it was and hopefully things get better with time and medication. I guess this covid or the vaccine has something to do about this. My both legs were fully collapsed at that time, but by the grace of God I'm fine now, back on my feet. I still have some symptoms like neurogenic bladder and a temperature sensation problem. Please do reply with what your thoughts about this. You are not alone in this. ❤

Hi, I'm a med student from Croatia, and in Europe, among guidelines to differentiate between ADEM and MS actually says that ADEM has little to no oligoclonal antibodies in the CSF. I am not certain if that difference applies only in Europe, but if you are a med student from this side of the world, it may be helpful to take that into account! Despite that minor difference, this is a great and very informative video, so thank you very much for posting it! 🥰🥰
I had adem 2 years ago and was put on IVIG and cyclophosphamide in hospital, I was only 26, I'm still undergoing rehab but my dad was told it was MS until my drs got my mri back
@@claire777. thanks for your empathy, and I too am sorry for what you are going through. As you are aware ADEM is different for everyone, but similar in many ways as it tends to strike the same areas. When I was hit it was quick and powerful, from my first noticeable symptoms (numbness in right arm and slurred speech) to hospitalization within three days. I was completely blind, unable to speak or reason, and my right side was paralyzed. Eye sight returned in a week or so, paralysis maybe two weeks or less (still list to right when walking), and speech was the slowest to return (three or four months of therapy). Lasting effects: Fatigue is the biggest. I have to get at least 8 hrs or I’m really no good to anyone. Fatigue can last a few days or more. It comes on for no apparent reason, but I am sure I have overdone it and just didn’t realize. Once I have, all other symptoms become exacerbated. I lose train of thought easily, search for words and forget names quite often. It seems my good time of the day is between 11:00 am and 6:00 pm. It is during those time I operate most effectively, this is not to say that outside of those times I can’t function. To look at me it is quite deceiving that I am disabled and I keep it that way. I eat healthy and exercise. I have learned my body and how I can best handle this disease. It is important that you do the same, and I’m sure you will. I hope this helped, and ask me anything you want to know.

My name is axel, 24 years old from Algeria. im 2018 i went to dentist to fix my teeth then went home after probably a week i started feeling numbness in my hand, troubles speaking, and diplopia. the the symptomes relieved without any meds, after almost 8 months i started having symptoms like lost in balance, troubles speaking clearly, diplopia again, and lost in taste and smell. i went to many doctors and they requested an MRI on my brain and spinal chord. the MRIs showed that i have demyelinating lesions on both spinal chord and CNS, been through a spinal tab and the IGg index was positive awell, and in the serology test i ve found that i have been infected of with HBV and the viral load was extremely high 9.42 log. i started taking the antivirals, and continued my diagnosis for the brain infection, been through a second spinal tab for HBV serology of Celebro spinal fluid and the results were positive after a year if research i have been diagnosed with MS and stared taking interferons which i couldnt handle. stopped it under doc's supervision and now am back on it since theres no alternative and no much meds here in Algeria now i have two questions if u may - can the hbv cross the bbb ? - did the hbv trigger my brain dymelination? i ve been searching lately and i found this article about ADEM, and started wondering whether i might mistakenly diagnosed. i would really pleased if answer, am so lost and cant find answers to my case. thank you so much.

Absolutely positively cannot use contrast dyes . My body will not accept it even with the CSF long story about the operating room the doctor himself had to jump like a frog I knew beforehand I was not scared I was terrified because of the contract how to use on me. My mother flatline three times in the 70s we were told never to use any contrast dye on the immediate family he started it but he didn't finish it but I have no idea because they never gave me no explanation of what I'd started to CSF or what happened in the operating room all I know is he had to incubate me his self because anesthesiologist freaked out. But that surgeon never talk to me after the surgery and never answered any questions on how the CSF started so I have no reasoning to pass it on the other doctors on did it start because I had a tooth start as a bacterial infection or a cephalitis I don't have no idea and probably never will because holding back of information. Something's been hidden for a reason. I might be down but I'm not stupid

And when it comes to diagnosis I would say I fall into the extremely rare category. And most the time told it's all in my head and I need to chill. Although when an instance it came that I self diagnosed myself for the CSF in 2021 my primary care doctor said she'd only ever seen two in her lifetime 32 years of practice and I was the second one it took me at least a year to make sure what I was looking at was in fact a CSF and it took her a few minutes in the office before I can convince her I didn't want to feel that I was playing LeapFrog but I had to let her know that I didn't have allergies that already been tested for allergies over a year prior to bcsf revealing itself. When my primary care doctor is very good doctor after ice squeezed the brain fluid out of tissue that was in my nose onto my light grey t-shirt with turned it dark gray her eyes got big as saucers and she said something's not right I said I think it's a CSF she said you know what I think you're right we're going to get you seats you're scared to the and she hit the ground running by that time I was relieved but still I was scared to death. And that's not worrying I'm sitting here right now my hands going numb and my head feels like it's crawling your has an infection. No answers so I have to seek these myself unless it is that they do private studies on people to see how long things will last I don't approve being a guinea pig whatsoever.??????????😢

10yrs old one eye went blind, spread to both in a week. Hospitalized 3 months. One eye almost blind and other needs glasses. ADEM.

Yeah. Adem is curable. It attacks once but Ms attacks several times
Most people (~95%) survive ADEM. The problem is that it often leaves scars on the CNS, meaning permanent disability or cognitive problems.
