I've been meaning to upgrade to from my AxeFXII, but every time that I use it I just ask myself "what more could I ever need?" I'm not a big tweaker and never bought it to tweak all day.....I bought it because it did the things that I needed very well and once I made a few core presets I've just used it. I literally went in last night to build a new preset for the first time in about 2 years and had fun, but it was done in about 20 minutes and I just played the rest of the night. The only thing that sucked was that I had to pull up the wiki to figure out what the name of the amp I was looking for was in AxeFX-ese. I also realized that I have about 150 amps that I have literally never even tried out.
I know modelers have come a long way but hard to decide between an Axe FX III or a Kemper. Seems like you have passionate fans on either side. It's a similar price point so hard to choose especially since I can't go to a store and demo. I'm leaning towards the Fractal since some of my favorite artists use it, but I'm also just a bedroom player lol. I can never find a definitive reason as to which one is better. I'd rather just get the best tbh.
Slate Digital Plugins are now Axe III (modelers) + Kemper (profilers) ; I didn't try them but I think it's the futur somehow. I think the Kemper will still be used for live gear (a lot of famous bands are using it, because it sounds more real and it is reliable) ; I think the Axe will be finish soon even for live or home studio
The harmonizers have always been great, it`s more the way you tweak them... but all in all, no harmonizer beats recording multiple tracks. Even the best Eventide harmonizers can`t beat an additional guitar layer or two :)
I have the AXE FX 2, and really like it. I use it with a Torpedo cab simulator for varying degrees of cabinet sounds. It does the cabinets pretty good too but Torpedo still best simulation for cabs. I use it with amp sim off since AXE FX 2 does that well.
I feel like I go back and forth all the time over Axe FX III demos, sometimes it sounds godly and, when directly compared to the real thing, identical to quality gear, other times it seems a little lacking. It certainly feels like compared to older Axe FX revisions, the general tone has less treble and a lot more low end flub for better or for worse. I'm reminded of the AX8 At The Gates video Ola did where the IR choice seemed to make or break the tone, so it could be that I'm not a fan of the particular combo here and the mic'd cab sounded pretty quiet comparatively.
My dilemma with these high end boxes, having owned the Kemper, is I got overwhelmed with the incredible settings combinations , always wondering if I was getting the max potential of any given amp sim so tweaked endlessly lol.
Whipped my Kemper clean after about 6months. Profiled my personal heads. Amp Heads stay at rehearsal space. Kemper is home where I can cut demos & rehearse w/ my actual tone. No need for all that xtra tone/non sense at the rehearsal space. Much happier w/the Kemper now that I found a application that works for me.
I reckon I little tip to make these videos a little better. Would be nice to hear the tested items in a full mix. Even a 30sec track to get the idea would be awesome. Love your vids
greetings from Canada Ola!!! Love watching your videos and watching you play guitar... Also, how come so many amazing Metal bands come from Sweden? 8 million people and you guys have some of the best Metal bands on earth... WOW!!! love the Slayer shirt!!!
Biggest problem that people with modelers make = not shaping the sound. The tubes in the best tube amps actually clip the lower and higher frequencies. If you remove the frequencies below 170Hz and higher than 8kHz it will actually sound good. The 500 Hz is also too high in the spectrum in most of the tones featured here. $3000 piece of equipment that sounds like shit because of the lack of EQ adjustment.
I enjoy watching technology grow within the industry and give musicians more options that are easier to travel with, give them more options in terms of effects and tones, but for someone that doesnt need 40 different amp/cab/effects combos every single night, what's the point? You still need a cabinet and a power amp, you still need a floor controller to switch between presets and effects, and we are no where close to a modeler or profiler perfectly nailing a specific amplifiers sound. Again, it's an incredible piece of technology but it still cant nail the sound of a tube amplifier... a piece of technology that has been around over 90+ years. I'll stick with my Fuchs, 412, and pedalboard.
I view it as an awesome piece of gear in the studio for tracking guitars. It’s kind of like my hub in my personal studio. I’m sure cranking the absolute shit out of a 100 watt head is more fun but this unit is killer for tracking down ideas. It’s an all in one guitar box! That’s awesome!
Dude, the problem with Axe FX is yeah, they’re great and all but this one like the others will again be outdated when they come out with Axe FX IV in a few years. On that ‘note’ (pun intended), when I’m not using a real amp I’d rather just go with plugins. Some of them sound as good as the Axe FX, but at a fraction (almost said fractal, another pun) of the price. At any rate, great video as always, Ola. Hope to have a beer and jam with you someday.
Same story with the early rack in the 90's: they cost an eye and everybody thinks it is the ultimate in tone and features. Eventually they became obsolete and cheap and almost nobody remembers them. Don't get me wrong, they sound good and are really reliable and quiet but very hard to tweak and nearly impossible to repair. What about a nice jcm900 or a Mesa mk4? They're a pain in the ass too in order to make them sound exactly how you want to and can give you troubles too...but they way more manageable.
I remember seeing these a little over 5 years ago or so. Never exactly knew what it was but I knew that everyone seemed to love it. This is a head amp and a multi effects processor? Damn. Sounds great though
@@yvngtyrant2549 you probably saw the previous model FX II. And yeah, you can go either straight to interface/front of house or through dedicated power amp to your cabinet.
The AXE FX III - NOT just a modeler. A STUDIO in a box. DAW Interface with multiple XLR inputs, FULL ON beautiful FX and output screen like no other. I LOVE LOVE LOVE mine. After having: Boss 100, AmpliFire, Line6 Helix LT.
Got to have the sustainiac switch, to make it sound completely accurate synyster isn't just a player he's also a technical genius. I think it sounds good on your guitar but it's better with the sustainiac switch just being honest.
Here's a shocker though - although AxeFX III sounds awesome, I can almost get the same sound and quality with just software plugins, at a fraction of the price, so for non touring people is there really a need/reason to get one?! My ears aren't what they used to be as well and my current favourite setup is using BIAS FX and that's it. I've got a really nice class A Laney combo but that's just collecting dust since life is so much easier with plugins! I used to collect rack pieces because I thought it looked cool that way, but since a laptop can replace everything - including the whole studio, it was a no brainer in the end ;) Agree or disagree?! Nobody can deny how good the software solutions have become though - and it costs virtually nothing.
Jens Andree you have a good point for home users. You should really try Neural DSP plugins. I have bias fx elite and to me it’s the jack of all trades but Neural dsp is the master. I got Plini and Nolly. Can try the free trail. No matter how I tweak stuff it sounds good. Cant believe how nice the cleans especially on Plini sound. With an amp you get annoying feedback. With digital i get 0 feedback and sounds like a studio recording.
What do you mean plug-in amps cost virtually nothing? Amplitube and its versions where you get more and upgrade and add amps adds up. Any amp from UAD is at least 150US just for one model. Personally I find the reverbs and delays alone in the axe fx 3 are worth the price. I mean what would happen if you bought a strymon timeline, big sky, mobius, riverside and iridium and their zuma to power all that? You are easily well past the price of an axe fx 3 and not even close to as many algorithms, options, and not to mention routing on that grid. Thats insane dsp. This is a no-brainer.
@@LCRLive687 Different people have different needs so one solution isn't going to be perfect for everyone, hence why we have so many different products out there, but with my "virtually nothing" comment I meant like BIAS FX (which I bought on a sale) gave me a near perfect solution for me whereas my rack effects costed thousands more - that's what I call "virtually nothing". There are more or less expensive software options out there and not all of them that sound great are that expensive, although you mostly get what you pay for to a certain extent.
Ola being awesome, just as I wondered about the levels you answered my question, your suggestions for starting with knobs at 12 oclock has helped get my tone faster especially when i recently switched cabs and when I tried a wah pedal . Right when you hook up the Seymour thats my tone lol cheers Ola
Oh yeah? Didn't know they used it. It does sound really good there. Although I'm too focused on trying to figure out what the rhythm on their songs are... :p
Nice tone, very versatile, looks really cool, and compact and portable. But the downside i find is the 1. It’s a computer so it’s going to become obsolete eventually and 2. Rigs get smaller and stages look empty and a little dull. But that’s simply my opinion.
An immediate difference between this and all the plugin amp sims and FX, is that this sounds tube-y - or just like a guitar into a real amp and speakers. Whereas, even the more recent plugins have that digital, harsh-edged, nasty zing sound which is not pleasant at all - it hurts my ears. Yes, making adjustments to EQ (plugins and on the guitar) can go some way towards taming the zing, but it seems that the makers of guitary plugins don't have the ears or experience needed to understand how what they're creating misses the mark so widely. This sounds really sweet.
Thank you so much for the honest review. I was about to purchase the Helix HX yesterday, but this video changed my mind. I think I will wait for the FM3. The AXE3 is too big and expensive.
I agree with it sounding better faster. I have had mine for a few months now, and I spend more time playing and less time tweaking because it just sounds so great. It has far more options than what a Helix does, so far more to tweak, but I almost never need to as I get the tone in my head within minutes on the Axe Fx 3.
with 4 inputs and outputs + support for multiple foot controllers you can use one Axe FX3 for entire band. Well, you'll have to be creative with switching things for each musician withing one preset, but if your band doesn't use a ton of effects and/or a lot of completely differently sounding presets you can replace 3-4 rigs with one relatively compact thing. I've heard some people already playing like this.
RGudmetalhead though, I’d argue given how expensive it is, I’d still feel uneasy having it on the road, I’d be afraid of it getting stolen. Although I’d feel the same way about my 100 watt Marshall, so it’s a tough call.
Did you try thu by overloud? with rig player profiles from choptones it sound very very good,i would be happy to hear what you think about it since its much cheaper then kemper or fx 3
Ola, the axe typically sounds a lot better than it does in this video. Not sure if you need to watch some Leon Todd Videos or the audio got messed up but it sounds overly compressed or something.
This thing looks and sounds AWESOME, and OLA makes it sound even better, but just like the latest iPhone or other shiny object, will it become outdated in a few years? The thing is a shit ton of money to become "old news" in 5 years. And yes, I am the jealous guy that can't afford one of these units, so I have some bias here, but as fantastic as this thing is, in 3 or 4 years when the AXE FX 4 comes out, will this turn into a floppy disk?
@@verstamp There are people that still use and love the Axe FX Standard, even, people like Glenn who compare these to phones just don't get that just because there'll be a new shiny version, doesn't make the previous models bad.

Somehow this is one of those few times I dislike the tones Ola dialed in.
Olas lead the way at 9:38 has got that flying in a blue dream touches going on. Album I immediately thought of. Very tasty. Nice tone.
Nah... nothing beats the guitar modeling processing power of my Digitech RP-100...
Rp1000 👍👍👍👍
I raise you with my Yamaha GW50 😏
Line 6 POD red bean of death \m/ (-_-) \m/
I loved my RP200 was great before it died.
my Zoom G2 isn't bad either
This video is a really good showcase of olas guitar playing style, it's a very recognizable sound no matter what effects he uses.
Ola’s Devin Townsend Solid 6/10. Love it.
Is it just me or do the direct tones sound nasty and muffled? :s
Something isn't right. Ola needs to watch some Leon Todd Videos. This sounds like something is being recorded wrong.
I probably know less about recording than ola and my hx stomp would stomp this thing lol
Sounds like shit!!!
it's not just you. I've heard some line 6 shit that sounded better. something is messed up
It's the pitch shiffter he uses to downtune his guitar through the Axe-Fx that absolutely destroys and muffles his tone.
“Enumerating Ravens” is that kind of like counting crows? I am so confused.
What I would love to hear from this unit are the harmonizers. Always been trying to find that Blind Guardian harmonizer sound.
And if you're prescribed something like Adderall...... You'll be on a geeked out tone quest that never ends lol!
Christopher Palko 👍👌👍✌️🎸😎. You gotta make it work for what you need. And you did. Like myself. Like any peace of gear
What I liked about the Kemper is how easy it was for me to get bad ass teens right away, not a whole lot of tweeking required.
WOW!!! love the Slayer shirt!!!
comparing to other amps you checked like REVV , I'm not satisfied with the sound of this, a handy tool for live.
AngbandMetal even neural DSP plugins sounds better...
@@NO-TALK-GuitarPlugin I agree
Devin Townsend impression was on point! haha
I get the feeling this wasn’t his personal choices.
Love the Devin impression :D Just before you said it I thought "This sounds like Devin Townsend"
It very much was Devin's style
I own 2 of these and they are they best units ever! I've chased tone for 40 years!
This is going to be my new rig. I'll at least be able to try out all sorts of heads/ cabs. I'm stoked.
@@SeytonWallace A bad pun, but indeed a pun :)
I’d like to see fractal make an Actal amp to combat something like the boss katana 🤔🤔🤔
Definitely sounds better than my zoom 808 and my digitech rp 90, slightly more options in my vast knowledge opinión
Damn. Sounds great though
it's not a head and it can't power cabs like a poweramp would
@@satyarsh665interesting. so then does it operate more like a pedal? I'm not too guitar savvy so I apologize if my questions sound dumb or ignorant.
How could you see this over 5 years ago if this unit was released just 1 year ago...
@@juegoperfecto I must've seen other units then,maybe older models
@@yvngtyrant2549 you probably saw the previous model FX II. And yeah, you can go either straight to interface/front of house or through dedicated power amp to your cabinet.
Awesome to see a video of you playing this! What is that string dampener you have at the nut? It’s not a Jimmy Clip. I don’t recognize it
Same question!
Serious Ola after sincere Ola, hopefully a glad Ola on its way
The AXE FX III - NOT just a modeler. A STUDIO in a box.
DAW Interface with multiple XLR inputs, FULL ON beautiful FX and output screen like no other.
I LOVE LOVE LOVE mine. After having: Boss 100, AmpliFire, Line6 Helix LT.
would you rather have a used jcm 800 full stack or 1 used axe fx 3?
I'll take the Marshall stack.
I never thought to use 2 microphones 😮 iv always used 1 slightly off center from a different video I watched for miking amps
I used to collect rack pieces because I thought it looked cool that way, but since a laptop can replace everything - including the whole studio, it was a no brainer in the end ;)
Agree or disagree?!
The Soldano SLO in Amplitube fit my needs perfectly. Took some time to find the right cab and mics but it sounds amazing.
I still have my zoom 505, should I bought this one?
Could be a nice reverb to my rack
This thing sounds pretty good for a VCR.
Ola really knows metal tone.
The tones on Carbomb’s new record use that, and it sounds AMAZING.
You mean lazer beam tone.
Oh yeah? Didn't know they used it. It does sound really good there. Although I'm too focused on trying to figure out what the rhythm on their songs are... :p
Yeah, it's cool! I am saving up for Synergy system! I want to revive my rack fx setup. Just, need modern preamps!
Nice tone, very versatile, looks really cool, and compact and portable. But the downside i find is the 1. It’s a computer so it’s going to become obsolete eventually and 2. Rigs get smaller and stages look empty and a little dull. But that’s simply my opinion.
This is the best most revolutionary thing to hit the market...until the next one comes out.
What's your favorite cab to use . Do you have a favorite???? Love what you do!
It really sounds powerfull to guitar riffs and solos , amazing gear!
Thank you so much for the honest review. I was about to purchase the Helix HX yesterday, but this video changed my mind. I think I will wait for the FM3. The AXE3 is too big and expensive.
Love that Solar. The finish on the bridge really looks great with the design
That natural color Solar looks fucking amazing. Is it swamp ash?
I agree with it sounding better faster. I have had mine for a few months now, and I spend more time playing and less time tweaking because it just sounds so great. It has far more options than what a Helix does, so far more to tweak, but I almost never need to as I get the tone in my head within minutes on the Axe Fx 3.
it's a mess, just play with a neural vst
@@vivarantx no, I'll use what suits me best 😊
That Lead Tone at 9.39 is fckng AWESOME!!!!!
Best guitar rig in the world \m/
Ax fx 3 seems more like a studio piece, given how big it is. If I had one, I wouldn’t really want to take it on the road.
with 4 inputs and outputs + support for multiple foot controllers you can use one Axe FX3 for entire band. Well, you'll have to be creative with switching things for each musician withing one preset, but if your band doesn't use a ton of effects and/or a lot of completely differently sounding presets you can replace 3-4 rigs with one relatively compact thing. I've heard some people already playing like this.
Its still smaller than a standard amp head though!
RGudmetalhead I didn’t know that. If that were the case, I guess taking this and only this on the road makes sense.
RGudmetalhead though, I’d argue given how expensive it is, I’d still feel uneasy having it on the road, I’d be afraid of it getting stolen. Although I’d feel the same way about my 100 watt Marshall, so it’s a tough call.
Doomhand I have mine racked in a road case and use the 4CM with my Randall KH103 and Mesa/Boogie JP2C
I would gladly win that and pay shipping 😂
I sold the farm to buy this one....love it so far...can't really operate it properly yet, but I'll figure it out...so powerful
4:54 you have an "Ola-drive"?
Sick and tired of chasing down good tubes for my Mesa boogie dual rectifier roadster might have to switch to this.
7:45 Sounds like Devin Townsend... Ow yeah! When will we have coffee with Heavy Devy?! You know we want it!!!
That needs to happen
When he will tour Europe, maybe.
That guitar looks epic, natural.
Did you try thu by overloud? with rig player profiles from choptones it sound very very good,i would be happy to hear what you think about it since its much cheaper then kemper or fx 3
God I miss the ease of the 80s and 90s. A couple switches and a couple knobs to turn.
I bought one. Im using a line 6 spider patch boosted with a metal zone. Sounds killer.
I love the Axe-FX III. Perfect unit.
Ola, the axe typically sounds a lot better than it does in this video. Not sure if you need to watch some Leon Todd Videos or the audio got messed up but it sounds overly compressed or something.
I really enjoy the vids. your metal but your so happy and enthusiastic about it! dig it!!!
Rich Delboccio how would good tone go out of date? It’s not like the tones on the axefx 2 suddenly stopped working when the 3 came out.
@@verstamp There are people that still use and love the Axe FX Standard, even, people like Glenn who compare these to phones just don't get that just because there'll be a new shiny version, doesn't make the previous models bad.
@@metalloid3417 Yea, it was Glen that planted that seed of hate in my head. This this is incredible beyond belief, and don't get me wrong. I REALLY WANT ONE !! I just wonder if Glen has a valid point or not.
@@richdelb Like I said, there are people who still love and use the first generation Axe FX, so IMO he's wrong. Especially with that "planned obsolesence" statement. Fractal are not Apple haha. I'm on the EU waitlist for the FM3, so Ola's video has me really excited to get my hands on it since it's the same firmware and modelling and all that stuff. Though if I weren't, I'd pick up a used Axe FX Standard/Ultra. To be honest I might do that anyway just to try it out while I'm waiting for the FM3 haha.
good point but i mean it has some extremely good sounds so even if he gets outdated it is already so close to a real amp that it doesn't really matter at that point.
That 5150 riff had a definite King Crimson ‘Starless’ vibe to it.
Crimson don’t chug.
They went beyond chug.
Nothing cheugy, boogie or Moogie.
Just pure Class A white hole emissions.
I’d love to hear you play some Crimson Ola.
There’s just not enough Crimson to keep the snarling crapoozing Overlords pacified.
I've got a kemper don't think i need any thing else
I have the Kemper as well but I may have to add a Fractal FM3 when it releases.
Don't fool yourself, you know you need it.
Weird flex, but ok.
It's exactly what I said before I bought the axe-III lol
