FoW is one of the most underrated and misunderstood bands of all time. The problem is so many people didn't "get" the sound that Fountains of Wayne were going for. It's the curse of writing power pop on purpose - when it's done it sounds simple, sugary and poppy - but there is a real art behind FoW's music, it is the sharpest of the power pop you can find - and its Americana-themed/everyday man lyrics. What sounds like simple perfection to listeners is no accident and no quick dash of writing. It was all on purpose and deliberate - which makes it that much better. FoW should have been celebrated far more than they ever were.
I disagree with those who says that FOW is only a one-hit wonder band (because of Stacy's Mom). I would rather say that they are underrated. FOW fan here :D
+Kristina Paula Fabillar Well you can't really 'disagree' about someone being a OHW. A 'hit' isn't really very subjective, it's a song that made it onto the charts, if you're using a strict definition, or if using a looser one, at least a song that's very well known by the general public. 'Hits' are solely a popularity contest, not really a matter of quality. Even if FoW are underrated, they're still by definition a OHW as long as they are only known by most people for one song.
Donald Kirby Von Koehler If 'Bought For a Song' made it to the hit lists or is generally known by people, then Fountains of Wayne are not a One Hit Wonder. If it didn't then they are. I've never claimed to know a lot about FoW, I'm just stating the definition of a OHW.
I really like the fact that this is not the loves story you expect. It's just the tell of two people, out of millions, who are lonely and it would be so easy to pair them up for a happily ever after. If this were a movie, it is exactly what would happen, but life is just not that simple...
I've seen this movie: they'll run into each other again and he'll get mad at her but she'll say she didn't even notice that she stole his taxi until it was too late and she was rushing to help her sick old grandmother. So he'll second guess himself and take her out to make it up to her and they hit it off and get married. Then after everything has settled down, she'll admit that it was all invented and she totally stole that taxi on purpose.
RIP Adam. I hope folks get the brilliance of this song: same lyrical structure/POV as Eleanor Rigby, and the word "lonely" isn't even used until the "Day Tripper" musical bridge reference. One of our great songwriters.
I will never forget how I first heard Fountains of Wayne. My brother owned a restaurant in the Outer Banks of NC and my 7 year old daughter and I went down from Virginia Beach. They were throwing t-shirts and CDs to the crowd and I caught their self titled CD. My daughter and I listened to it all the way home and we have been fans ever since. I always have been perplexed why they weren't more popular but then they were always MY band! Fuck I am sad...I have sung along to their music like I sing along to the Beatles, constantly. Reminds me of when I heard about John Lennon's death. Thank you Adam for all the happiness and beauty you gave to the world.
I think where I first heard them was, of all places, on NPR - the same audio clip that's on "Out of State Plates." As a fan of power pop I was hooked instantly. Shortly thereafter I got to see Chris and Adam do an acoustic set at a record store in north Jersey. Given the time frame they must have been on an Interstate Managers publicity tour. And a few years later again at an outdoor concert in south Jersey. Like most of their fans I can't understand why they didn't make a bigger splash. They had the tunes, they had the cute videos, but they never clicked with the public at large. Meanwhile my daughter and her friends can't get enough of "musicians" that couldn't play a song without 3 producers and a bank of computers generating "music."

And here's the director's view - And answers who plays Beth... Adam Neustadter, director: "When I first heard 'Someone To Love,' I immediately thought of The Beatles' "Eleanor Rigby." Not just because of Beth's last name - which may be a reference to Father Mackenzie - but because of the accurate descriptions of these lonely people and how the song answers The Beatles' questions of, "All the the lonely people, where do they all come from? All the lonely people, where do they all belong?" Was I reading into this too much? Absolutely. I've known Adam Schlesinger and Jody Porter from Fountains Of Wayne for a few years now and have been listening to the band since high school. FOW craft these perfect pop songs that are usually narratives, so the concept for the video had to follow the story of the song pretty closely. We got very lucky with the cast. Demetri Martin, who is one of my favorite comedians and a brilliant guy, plays Seth Shapiro. Faryl Millet, who is also incredibly talented and has somewhat of a cult following from her show Fancy Nancy's Funny Hour, plays Beth Mackenzie. The story is about these two lonely characters living in New York, leading parallel lives right next door to each other, but with no idea the other exists. When their paths finally do cross, they blow the chance at finding love and we see that, despite being so lonely, they're still cutthroat New Yorkers who are too busy to care."
