always was one of my favorites, sort of forgot about it for a few years once Spotify became my primary listening source. IIRC this was a bonus track on the JP version of The Campfire Headphase.
Songs like this are the reason I love electronic music. With the right minds behind the program, electronic music can hit levels of depth and emotion through sounds like no other form of music. Sound is the most important factor to music and with electronic music sound is infinite. We're breaking away from the core fundamentals of what good songwriting used to be, the artists at Warp have been innovative in finding new ways to bring depth, complexity, emotion and originality to music. They are bringing music back to what it essentially is at it's core (raw sound and emotion with no lyrics or direct message) and at the same time moving it forward in a direction that is already so ahead of our time. I believe that BoC, Aphex Twin and Radiohead among others will pave the way for the future of music. They are all so ahead of their time that most people haven't caught up with them and are still stuck in the textbook fundamentals of what traditional quality songwriting should be.The celebrity aspect and the performance aspect of music is the least important factor. Too many musicians are focussed on it and it cheapens what music really is. The musician shouldn't have this god like persona, if they really care about music and not narcissism then they should keep their personality removed. Mainstream music has been going absolutely no where, even bands that are musically trained and considered "good" are often uninventive and just following in the footsteps of another musician. Music is art, art doesn't need to be complex and an artist doesn't need to even be skilled to create emotive, powerful and original art. Technical skills only matter depending on what you're trying to convey and the technicalities in music have very little to do with talent, merely practise and persistence. People should find their own meaning in music and not have to be told. That's my opinion.
Had to come back here after Friday night, I'm in the midlands of the UK and for the first time in my life got to witness the Northern Lights for myself and it was the strongest display in the my country in 20 years! Because of this video, this is actually the track I associate with the Northern lights, it is just the most perfect soundtrack for the visuals by the best band in the world❤
If you listen to a binaural recording of Macquarie Ridge which features the song backwards on one channel and forward on the other you can hear it’s exact palindromic structure.
As someone who thought that had listened to everything from BoC , finding this song feels like when you are a waiting for your payday, and you find a 50€ note inside a book in a shelf. Such a great song that I didn't even know it existed, now I have something new from BoC to enjoy, since I didn't know there was a bonus track for the japanese version of the LP. Thanks for sharing this.
I listened to this on my trip through Germany. It’s always going to remind me of driving by a power plant watching everything disappear from view. I drove past a TU144 and Concorde while listening to this to. It was awesome.
+Glassmaps I know right.I used to say i hate electronic music, it's not real blablabla. Then i heard BOC. What an eye opener. or ear opener i should say. Or even soul opener.
+ffrank True indeed. Goes to show we shouldn't look down on or dismiss any style of music. Music is magic, any music. Although i still don't see myself going through a whole night of trash or death metal hoping to find a nice tune, lol. Maybe in a next life. ;)
Some of he best BOC tracks ive heard are one offs, anomalies, not available anywhere apart from youtube. A bit like Zero 7, makes them even more enigmatic.
Max volume, open my window, pass my head outside, in the cold of winter, forgetting all my troubles, thinking about life, world and universe. Thank you Boards of Canada.
This song and these beautiful sights have everything and I can't even tell how or why. These guys are really feeling what they're doing. Simple yet unbelievable.
this was and still is a favourite of mine. Has a lot of meaning to me... specially between the ages of 13-17... boc impacted my entire high school experience. If anything, they helped me stay alive!
The Boards of Canada's musical "works" takes you to a place of elevated spiritual richness. Then, there are some of their works which even takes you further. This is one of them. At 4:50, it appears as if the clouds are representing time itself; fluid, musical, changing and reflective. All the while, knowing that they will never ever be the same again. Not like this moment.
The first BOC song i've heard was Dayvan Cowboy. That song took me to a place in my consciousness that made me feel like I was in tune with the Cosmos. After I heard that song, I was hooked because when a band or group makes more songs, they just roll the dice and some aren't that good. This is not the case with BOC. This is another solid gem from them. They have various songs that are just freaking incredible. I also recommend Ulrich Schnauss; that dude's music is orgasmic.
Got any Ulrich recommendations? I fell in love with Blumenwiese Neben Autobahn but the other tracks i've skimmed through haven't quite hit as hard for me personally
I have been listening to BOC for many years and even now a day does not pass without me playing their music. This particular track is not on my copy of Campfire Headphase so I was delighted when I heard this music for the first time. I play this track very often and always come to FroschYankee to listen and wonder at the truly beautiful eye candy that I see before me. Music and visuals in perfect symmetry.
Discovered this track in August 2010 when I moved up to Scotland for a woman I met on Twitter. Crazy times! Didn't last long, but beautiful memories taking turns each playing music.
Absolutely love this track. Just when you think BoC have done it all you hear a hidden gem like this!!! Just wish it had been released worldwide. Beautiful music.
The real question, is why would anybody come to this video, and say "I don't like this". People could not enjoy this, yes, that's fine, but expressing it here, is as illogical as entering an Art Gallery, scream "I don't like this", and then just step out.

Somewhere around the 2:30 mark my perception suddenly changed on its own and visually kind of tripped me out. The camera follows the stars kind of giving the impression that the earth is scrolling past. Amazing shots! and equally as beautiful music from BoC.
+Kaylem Kerr I honestly hope they just make something new. I don't think anyone was expecting tomorrow's harvest to come out of them and they gave us something beautiful. I hope they make what they love and they make something unique and creative and original.
boards of canada is probably one of the best music to go with these beautiful aurora, and i feel that everyone's got to see this in real, at least once in their lifetime. i hope i will! :)

It's a shame this song isn't on iTunes. :(

I come back to this song every so often usually in times of big change, and it always quells the fear. ❤️
This is surely one of BOC's overlooked brilliancies.

Radiohead these days is disingenuous. Radiohead = overvalued
That sums it up nicely.
I went to like your comment. Realized I already liked it years ago. ❤️
i used to listen to this on sad nights as a teen. damn i miss those times.
I live in Norway and see this kind of nature every day. And now that snow has come it is just beutifull.
Thank you Boards of Canada for all the wonderful soundscapes you've created over the years. You guys are truly without equal.
Nothing like when the bass hits in a boards song.. helps you feel even on the numbest of days.

I had a similar experience on a small railway line in Denmark in 1996, listening to Micheal Brook's Breakdown.
- And of course the Brothers Sandison originally hail from just outside Edinburgh, thus you were heading to BOC's hometown.

The drums in this song are reversed, so when you reverse it they sound normal and everything else gets reversed, AND IT SOUNDS AMAZING
