  • The Laurelton State Village for Feeble-Minded Women of Childbearing Age was founded in 1917 with an initial group of 36 patients. It was the first institution of its kind, designed specifically to isolate and care for women deemed "feeble-minded" from puberty through menopause. The facility was established based on eugenic principles, which held that intellectual or mental deficiencies were hereditary, and that segregating these individuals was necessary to prevent the passing of such traits through reproduction.
Dr. Mary Moore Wolfe, the institution’s first Superintendent, played a central role in its creation and served in that capacity for 23 years. Wolfe viewed mental deficiency not as a medical condition, but as a sociological issue stemming from inadequate education. Her perspective influenced the development of academic and vocational programs at the facility, aiming to teach women the skills necessary to reintegrate into society. Many residents learned basic literacy, and daily activities included tasks such as farming, livestock care, and other work that helped sustain the institution. The facility also featured industrial training areas, including a bakery, cafeteria, laundry, sewing room, and farm colony, as well as a hospital and specialized areas for housework.
In the 1960s, the institution began admitting male residents, prompting a name change to the Laurelton State School & Hospital. The facility continued operations until it closed its doors in 1998.
In 2006, Mountain Valley Inc. acquired the property with plans to convert it into a resort. However, no significant progress was made on these plans. The property was sold again in March 2021, though no specific future developments have been announced.

I still have The Exploring Crew black with white print pull over hoodie since the first hoodie merch were sold, and the quality was so amazing and incredible that it seriously still looks like it’s new after all it’s been through, honestly. That was ages ago and I got it for my kid, and my kid got me addicted to watching, and well, I got the hand me downs, and it’s one of my favs now, plus it’s warm and comfy for that mountain lifestyle. Obviously I still enjoy watching too, I just don’t comment much, but hit that like always.
So the statement of *best cloths in the world* , well that’s spot on considering the quality and style is top notch and lasts a long time!!! I’m actually loving the anime tee, but I have a serious form of XP, however, I could put a long sleeve shirt underneath, but truly would love it in a long sleeve so I’m not baking in it in the warmer months so I can show it off when the UV

The sad reality that the dorm rooms had a lock outside of the doors hit me. Imagine being locked up & imagine the workers locking so many doors every day. Especially knowing that families literally abandoned their family members there is even sadder.

It is very sad that there are so many abandoned but most of our people with mental illness have no where to ho but the streets. Whoever politicians who have this program closed ,they did an injustice. I worked for 38 years in inpatient psychiatry and patients were discharge to shelters which is inappropriate because they have no clue how to take their medication.Instead of abandoning them they could have made them like housing program for them and have them supervised by adequate staff. That is a beautiful place.

The blue thing found in the sensory room was used for residents who could not use their legs. They would put them in there with their hands near the floor so they could move themselves around on the floor. Like a reverse belly wheelchair type thing. I could tell you so many things and so many more buildings to see. The Autopsy room in the hospital is amazing.

It was for "feeble" minded woman of child bearing age. i live literally 2 minutes down the road from there. the first building that you guys saw used to be my grams church. my dad actually built those crosses for my gram, crazy!! there is a lot of history behind these asylums. there is a bunch of rumors how the women that were placed there would pretty much give up their bodies just for men (the guards) to take them somewhere or get them something because they weren’t able to leave. a lot of the women there were either mentally ill or had children before marriage or before an adult. this stuff interest me a lot!!

This place is truly amazing. There is a really great historical fiction book that takes place here called The Foundling, by Anne Leary. It deals with the unethical treatment of women kept here in the era of eugenics and forced sterilization.
Women were sent here for being "feeble minded" and they attempted to rehibilate them back into society by teaching them skills in cleaning, cooking, and farming. It was basically was its own self-sufficient village.
Many of the women were paroled out to work at other places after they learned the necessary skills, but the idea was to keep women with mental disabilities, or that were frowned upon by society, here between the ages of 16-45, so they could never bear children. They didn't live here for life, but were released post menopause.
Staring in the 1960s, men were also admitted here.
Thanks so much for doing this one Josh, as I've had a huge interest in it since reading the above mentioned book! Sad how the theater ceiling has so many holes now and the gym is caving in. Some videos I've seen of it in the past did not have that happening yet.

58:45 It is an early model Cyclo-flush bedpan sterilizer from Amsco Sterilizer Company in Erie, Pennsylvania (now owned by STERIS Corporation in Mentor, OH). Step on the pedal, insert bedpan, and "flush" to clean. There is a drain at the bottom. The valve on the left side is probably the steam piping (connected to the steam-heating system in the facility). It uses steam to sterilize the bedpan. Steam is vented out the top pipe.

These are some great abandoned videos, I was doing abandoned not as long as I should, and occasionally, if it falls into my lap, I gained experience in the early '1980s-'90s if I go to any of these places I bring one of those portable solar batteries I have one that uses a panel has all the plugs needed it the large one, maybe a smaller unit with the same outlets and plugs you could power devices even that television you filmed in this vlog or even charge up as you go along. The light stand with the lights was probably light therapy. I always check the circuit breaker boxes, some places even if abandoned still might have power on them or phone service, those large red boxes are the fire alert systems for the building. Sorry for my long comment, I'm used to typing up long comments & helpful information.

The buildings are beautiful. It's such a shame it's all going to waste. These buildings are also historical. I wonder what the plans are for this place ?
Thank you josh for a very interesting video 😍

Unfortunately, probably, like most abandoned places, it will just continue to rot away, no one to take care of them

Hey Josh! I just started watching your videos. I just wanted to add something to what you said. I took psychology and when you mentioned the "pink rooms" it's actually thought that pink is a calming color.

Josh, I was on interstate 65 leaving Lexington, Alabama traveling to Gulfport MS and I saw a bus/camper that looked very similar to yours. I was staring hard at the driver to see if it was you driving, but I realized it wasn’t you. 😅 This 40 something year old was fan girling for a few seconds 😂 Love all your videos Josh! Been a fan for a LONG time now. Thank you!

I lived in an institution and so many of the things you explore are very real. The showers all together, the tunnels, the various buildings etc. it was a state institution in the west when I was a child. We had a bowling Ally and gym, and basements. The institution was sold and some of the buildings demolished. It was over 100 years old. I was there in the 1960s- mid 1970s. I never liked the green paint, or pink but the state institution was a special school. Back in the days they called it the Infirmery.
