Do you know if he’s selling the fruit he’s growing? Specifically the wax Apples?
I'm 100 percent with him when he said if I dies it's a learning experience....I started my permaculture yard over a year ago and everything has survived and thrived....we live in northern AZ so we get 2 extreme temperatures...my theory is if it dosent make it then it dosent need to be in my yard....micro climates are the way to have trees and plants grow

I have an above ground veggie garden in the backyard. Next to that I have a Strawberry field and a Container Blackberry. Now I began fruit trees in my front yard. Wow I underestimated the physical work and really hurt for some weeks. I'm in North Las Vegas and I'm so grateful that I began my food gardening education back in 2012. There's a lot to learn. I love all of it.

Had a friend live in Belize for two years. Shipped in second hand products from USA that they need. He loved it. Laid back friendly people who are always willing to share their rum and sacred herbs lol!
Derek and John thank you for this presentation. Derek, I'm from the USA originally and everywhere I've lived outside the USA has taught me to eat better and I'm now on a small property in Spain that is filled with fruit trees. There is a problem with imported harmful bugs and diseases also lack of water and the growing problem of desertification. People can ignore the signs but the truth is, the growers, intensive growers, do know that there is a climate change. People can deny it all they want but the proof is in the pudding. When you can't buy the seeds that are replanatable anymore, or buy certain products for growing meanwhile purchase of the organic fruit and vegetable is becoming less possible, then it's BIG sign so be alert. These resources starting from the basics are not readily available as they were before. Derek, bless you for your persistence and kindness to ecology.

I too am a Lv resident and really want to get into gardening not sure if I should just start or wait till next year, would love to have you come evaluate my backyard, it’s a very big backyard for Vegas but I’m not sure where I should put the garden, I will be custom buildings raised beds forsure 😂🤔 I guess trial and error is the way to go!, love your videos John! Most folks from 3rd world countries they are used to cooking meals from scratch. And we don't grow things base on scientific knowledge, we take care of them from watching and helping our elders before. Currently I'm in central California where the average temperature ranging in the 90+-100+. Im a renter so i grow all in containers, all tropical veggies. One thing I noticed is that container grow requires more care and attention than those directly in a natural bed of dirt.

Most importantly you have to be “one”with the universe to grow like that. If you have any type of bad vibes/frequency you will throw off the the plant’s frequency
My gardening 'experiments' are in Greece. Long, hot, dry summers.Any stones I find whilst planting, I place at the base of my fruit trees, I mulch all my fruit-vegs plants.Mulch and stones keep moisture underneath. I put 95%sugar 5% Baking Soda with a little water as paste in a bottle on the ground for antbait. 12:30 Volcanic rocks for the minerals? 14:30 Bottle Brush plant.I also have avocadoes, coffee, mango,Lychee from seed,bamboo from seed and goji berries growing. Oranges lemons,kiwi,mulberries, alsorts here no problem. What is the latitude there?How does Derek deal with plant diseases?

when you say he is putting his food scraps right in there, is he burying them under the straw layers mostly?
I also watch his videos and follow on FB. I am a vegas gardener too. I finally got my raised beds mulched after seeing how deep his mulching is. As the plants grow, I will be deepening it. The reduction in watering needs has already been significant. I like hand watering too, because it gives me time to check each plant for bugs and issues. While drip systems are great, some plants do not need as much as others. You are more than welcome to come see my small backyard beds, although I am not a youtuber. lol I think I have about 60 sqr feet of garden.

At 14.20 the ornamental is one of the many Callistemon species - commonly referred to as a Bottlebrush. Flowers are heavy with nectar, great for nectar-feeders like hummingbirds and bees in your garden. Being from Australia they are fairly drought tolerant once established but can get very leggy if not pruned.

i live in MA.westfield i have 8 year old avacado 2 paypaya 3 pineapple pomagrant ,lemon , lime, orange,paw paw,4 type raspberry, 4 blueberry, 3strawberry 2 goji berry, current, kiwi, grapes,peach,plum,pear,apple cherry,fig,elderberry,logan berry,dill sage ,rosemary,mint,spearmint,thyme,episodae,buckwheat,winter rye n peas, clover,60 sun flw 5 kinds,25 melon 8 kinds then 50 kinds of vegi most many diffrent kinds,11 types toms 60 plants 5 typebean 4 cuc,, blaa blaa blaaa chef 38 years live on 1/2 acre down town ,chickens free compost at work my soil owwwww,smoking oh lots of room to play p

He doesn't need to keep the longan in the greenhouse. I kept my smaller longan outside all winter in Vegas and and it didn't sustain any cold damage. The lowest temperature recorded was 27 in my yard too. Jaboticaba and white sapote will survive without any damage as well.
Ikr. So does moringa, lychee and several other tropical plants that I use to thought would fry in the cold.

10:50 Physalis peruviana, has its origin in Peru. The plant and its fruit are commonly called Cape gooseberry, goldenberry, poha, and physalis, among numerous regional names. I have one too ;)

Pressure cook the beans, done in a fraction of the time.
Growing anything using metered water becomes quite expensive, but the agrochemicals are not there unless they are in the water. I wonder if the grower is allowed to have a cistern to store water from roof gutters. There are municipalities that are not allowing rain capture.

actually we're going into a gsm - grand solar minimum, but there is always gonna be hot spells. over the past 12 months, we've had a record-breaking rainfall, more than any other time in 125 years. the flooding is a disaster for our farmers & will result in higher food costs. so thank you for showing us how to grow our own food.

@@VickiTakacs. i know what it is, weather warfare/manipulation is causing massive damage to our food supply and suffering to our ppl especially the farmers. nwo is trying to wipe out our farmers' crops & and farm animals so they can have control of the food supply eventually, but we're also in the early stages of a gsm too. there's lots of great info on the topic by credible (not nwo) scientists. iceage farmer on yt has many vids on the topic. we all must prepare and learn to grow our own food to become self-sustainable iceage farmer also has a discord listed on his yt page for more info.
@@RuralRuins I am right here in the Midwest and while only the northern part of my state had farmers flooded out, many states around us lost everything. The gov't did nothing to help them. I couldn't agree with you more. This was on purpose. With Trump signing that new bill giving Monsanto free rein it is obvious what they're up to and how they could possibly have more free rein than they already have is ridiculous so I can only surmise it has to do with us not being able to sue them. I saw a video a while back of a forest that had been poisoned and totally destroyed so that they could put in gmo trees but they were struggling. (Dan Wigginton) Trump sent one of his henchmen to wreak this havoc. I could cheerfully bitch slap Trump til his head falls off.
@@RuralRuins This insanity also hit the deep south and one homestead I follow had a lot of loss on their fruit trees but surprisingly they got buds on them again. Well, some of them did and some of the farmers are adjusting crops and methods to try and work with this weather. Even he was flooded out later and lost crops and the thing is that the snow melt in Wyoming is late but when it does happen, oh my, not good for us down here.

To live your life taking care of our world, taking care of the garden and plants is a great thing and I very much respect. His soul seems to be connected to the earth and his garden. If I believed in sentient plants.. they'd be in his garden. I live in Phoenix.. just a year in this house and I'm trying to figure out gardening... talking about store-bought food tasting like crap... how about papaya in Oregon? I always thought papaya tasted horrible until I went travelling & got some ripe from nearby farms!
Coastal southern Oregon is actually zone 9a.
How I wish I can grow tropical trees but can’t cause I live In an apartment in scorching hot Arizona. And whatever plants I buy end up being invaded by annoying little gnats. 😐
I prevent gnats from invading plant container by growing all in terra-cotta pots with cactus potting soil and an inch of pure sand on the top and bottom of the container. Sand and perlite can be mixed in to enhance drainage.
The Mexican race can usually handle it down to 18 degrees. The Guatemalan and West Indian races are not cold hardy
But with lots of dieback on branch and limbs. ~23F seems to be the limit for the most cold hardiest of avocados before it goes south really quick.
Dragon fruit won’t make it during the winter in Vegas unless they are SUPER protected
But they can grow without protection once they become bigger. Like Phoenix, Az Vegas can potentially grow more than just ordinary citrus and palm trees.
Update: my own dragon fruit vine in Las Vegas flowered and fruited for the first time last year. Zero frost protection for 5+ years and still going. Beat that doubter! XD
