They make good river boat engines because there's no cooling system blockages. Hits the very cool list with me.
That is one of my favorite parts and. thanks so much for watching.
Very cool indeed!
One of the kids doesn't have faith in your homemade boat motor. He's not letting that paddle go.
Funny and thanks for watching.
That's pretty fast for pretty cheap
very fast for what I have in it, dollar for dollar, it is probably the fastest thing on the river. thanks so much for watching.
In the name of some various lord and all boats that are hole-y...... someone needs to make/market some conversion kits for this brilliant concept!
Briggs & Stratton actually sells a kit like this online
I agree. Great idea. A lot of money could be made.
That would be cool, I would probably buy one for my next build... Thanks for watching.
I need to look into that and thanks for watching.
Sounds like a plan. Thanks for watching.
Dude this is so cool! Outboards are so expensive! Have you thought about piping the exhaust barely under water?
Another project in my future. Already built a duel wheeled mower thanks to you!
Right on! I love hearing that and thanks so much for watching.
Very nice! I'll take that speed any day if it gets us to fishing spots off the bank. And no water cooling to worry about!
My thoughts exactly and thanks for watching.
Chud you should do boat motor on a lawnmower
MR STOKERS1994 YES
Now that would be cool and thanks for watching.
NO LIFE JACKETS?
There were about 5 onboard, but we did have them on. Only 6 and under are required to wear them. Still not a bad idea. Thanks for watching.
I would make a diamond plate all the way around the shaft where it spends
That would be cool and maybe I can do some thing like that soon. Thanks for watching.
Beautiful! I have several garden tractor V-twin engines around 20HP I can use for a project just like this. Watching how you did the crankshaft to outboard spine is an inspiration for me. Outboard motors are SO expensive and this is an answer. Where I am in Florida, most water is very shallow. Mud motors and airboats are the usual way to get around. This will fit right in. Thanks!!
Let me know if you build on!! I also want a mud motor, I am in Florida too, but this kinda works the same. Been watching mud motor builds lately, maybe that will be on my resume' soon too. What part of Florida and thanks for watching.
I am at Lake Panasoffkee Florida which is about 30 miles south of Ocala and 60 miles north of Tampa right on I-75. I lived 44 years of my adult life in Jacksonville and there most of the water for boating is at least brackish if not salt. I bought a 14' 6" Critchfield boat in 1999 and the salt ate the Suzuki DF40 cylinder head. I was just finishing up on replacing the head now when I discovered an incredible deal on a new Suzuki DF50 motor from New Smyrna Beach for $4,990. which I bought. Never again will I run in salt water. Lake Panasoffkee is very shallow as is the Withlacoochie River flowing out the top of the Lake. With our recent drought most of the lake is about 4' deep. I am an old retired auto mechanic and while in Jacksonville I did a lot of mowers, weed eaters, garden tractors and power equipment on the side @@chud327
Ps. Your not gonna hurt that thing running wot. It's made for it. That's how it runs on a mower. Let her eat
As long as wide open is in gear and in the water. In neutral, that thing scares me and get up there fast... then governor is unhooked. Thanks for watching.
@@chud327 yes. Def not under load. I love the concept though man. It's way smarter than a regular outboard that needs sea water to cool. Hats off to ya. Cant wait to see the next build. Play with prop pitch too and watch the rpms.
Almost makin a Rooster Tail! Not bad! Pushing you'll right along. Good job.
I might could adjust it for a better rooster tail, gives me ideas... Thanks for watching.
I think you fit in to MAD MAX world perfectly, love your work.
Thanks you so much, have you seem my Poulan mud mower, many people think it looks like something from Mad Max. Thanks for watching.
Just the thought of being able to run out in the Gulf and skip flushing a motor (without feeling guilty)is a awesome.sign me up! Thats a cool build...
Well put and thanks so much for watching.
I think it's badass but before you head out into the Gulf with that thing consider reliability have some backup but it is kick-ass
Great paint job. You could do very well making conversion kits..... That is amazing.
Please make the kids wear life jackets.
Good idea and thanks for watching!!
did you take the water pump impeller and housing off and leave them both off?
Some I take off others I leave in. This one was off I think. Thanks for watching !!
You need to get a short lower unit or build your transom up to raise the whole works up so your prop is not so deep in the water. That's why it's not planing out . an going so slow
Yes, I do plan to experiment with that, thanks for watching!!
I'm going to build the same engine and lower unit setup for a pontoon. Lower unit gear ratio is 2.0:1 wondering if these 18 hp briggs would handle putting sprockets on the crank and prop shaft to speed the prop up? From what I'm seeing the briggs is only turning the prop half the speed it was originally designed for. That's at 3500 rpm the briggs is governed to. The 2 stroke was spinning 5000 rpm!
This one has no governor, but I don't think I has the power to spin the prop twice as fast. Feel just about right where it is right now. thanks for watching.
i put a 25 hp kohler engine off of a riding mower , on a 9.9. Honda lower , im only able to get 6 mph out of it , any suggestions? thanks
If you can find a better prop or a bigger foot than the 9.9. I always wanted to try some gears to make the prop spin faster, but haven't done it. Good luck and thanks for watching.
I
Know the guess that built that it’s pretty cool didn’t watch the whole thing so don’t know if the guys taking credit for it or not but people who built stuff themselves don’t guess what the switches are they know what they wired up
I didn't build this one, I bought this one. I have built 3 others before this one, but saw this one on facebook marketplace and could not resist. thanks for watching.
What size DIAMETER blade ? How many blade ? What is the pitch ? Thanks
I am not sure, but I will try to include it in the video next time I take it out. thanks so much for watching.
Hi I'm from Brazil, How many HP does this engine have, one or two cylinders?
It is a twin cylinder called an oppy, it has 18.5 hp. thanks for watching.
That's awesome. But for the love of God where are your life jackets!?!??
There is a front storage box and under the seat storage, we had them in there. You only have to wear them if you are 6 years old or younger. I did wear mine on the next homemade motor run, it seemed sketchy. thanks for watching.
You need 4o change the trim on motor so to get boat on top of the water more speed if you do that
Hope to do lots of improvements and experimenting with this boat real soon. I am trying to get in the 20's. Thanks for watching!
Hey Chud barrel boat community kicked off very well in this video what was the hp on the lower unit and if it still has a water pump be cool to plumb it into the exhaust to quite it down a bit make the mufflers longer into single
Unsure on the lower unit hp, I would estimate it to be a 40 hp, but there were no marking on it. Muffled more would be nice. Thanks for watching.
Any water that splashes into your flywheel is “water cooling”
True and thanks for watching.
Only problem I have is that they are so loud
I was loving the sound, but would get old on a long trip. Could run the exhaust down under water before my next trip. Thanks for watching!!
does it stay cool to do the job fred from bundaberg australia
I never had any issues with it getting hot that I know of, planning to take it out again in the morning. Video coming soon and thanks for watching.
Ok Mr. Chud I want to build a mobile john boat on wheels that drives and floats, build one so i can steal your ideas thanks!
That is what they are on her for. Good luck and thanks for watching.
That's awesome bud, pretty much bullet proof too I'd reckon. I love it! 👌
Thanks so much and I hope so. I love it too and thanks for watching.
The motor sits to low in the water.
Raise it till it starts having trouble getting on plain then lower about a half inch and try it. That gearbox in the water is the major speed killer on them
Will keep that in mind and hope to do some test again later this month, summer has just been too hot. thanks for watching and for the tip.
@@chud327 I raced hydros for 35 years, I learned a lot of tricks
Two years later, are there any down sides to the swap
That engine started knocking, probably cause I had to idle all day in the rainbow river. Maybe it didn't get enough oil flow, from idling literally for hours. Ran great until that ant the engine has already been changed. Will try to get another video out soon and thanks for watching!!
Juat think is that was a 40 hp efi briggs turning 4500. That lil boat would rip. I like it man. Had a buddy build one on a 40 merc lower. He got it to get in the high 20's. But he had a 25 hp. Honda marine engine he got off a go devil
Sweet, that give me something higher to shoot for. thanks for watching.
Is it still air cooled
Boat motor is water cooled
How reliable?.
Like a riding mower, air cooled
@@sebastiendurand9367 boat motors are water cooled because of the insane load that a boat has to push friction etc
I think that it may work for a while but it's always running way to hot
And it will overheat and melt down
I can't see it being reliable
@@benkalinowski5834 ive been running my 26 briggs on a 50 yamaha for about 5 years,2000 hours.......how much more reliable do you want.
And your wrong about why outboards are water cooled.
Water is more efficient at cooling than just low speed airflow....and since your in water with your boat and motor.....water is the natural choice for cooling.
Air cools from the outside, water cools from inside the block where the heat is being generated.
@@nickpellegrin there is no way that it will last ass long as water cooled
This is why cars are
Everything is
Don't be foolish
There is no way on earth it will last as long
Get a infared laser temp reader on the engine head when your full out
And see how much hotter it is
@@benkalinowski5834 im not gonna arguee with you,im not saying air cooled is better than water cooled,or water cooled is better than air cooled.
Just stating facts.
Stocks briggs vanguard series are factory rated for 500 hours of service.my 26 intek has over 2000 hours pushing a load at 19 mph for 5 years, some days are 8 hours running, both cylinders compression are 140 psi.
And i have plenty other briggs with many more hours, all original internals and not melted down as you advertise.
How many water cooled boat motors have you come across with over 2000 hours, and never been rebuilt.
My whole point is....your logic is wrong.
I have nothing to prove,i dont need to to answer your replies anymore.i only answered because i read your reply, and your facts arent facts, just your opinion.....but your trying to pass em off as facts.
My claims are backed up.
Btw.....water cooled is more efficient over aircooled,no arguement there.
Funny how 90% of moderen prop driven airplanes are aircooled and.....people trust them with their lives......you wouldnt happen to be an aviation mechanic would you 🤣
Btw....heres a fun fact for ya.....your cars precious cooling water that is far superior than air......its cooled by air 😁
Probably fast on flat bottom jon boat
I was wondering about that, may need to do an experiment. thanks for watching.
Paint the boat camo like the motor
That would be cool and thanks for watching.
chud327 all good I’ve been watching your videos for ages
What's the fuel consumption rate?
I have only used it once and it seem pretty good. I will try go do a bunch of fuel tests this summer. thanks for watching.
I just put a 6.75 hp Briggs on a Bucanner 5hp lower unit did you change your prop? I seen someone say if you don’t go to a 2 blade you can over work the motor?
the reason the engine started knocking is because at to low of an rpm, the oil wont get to the top rod and crank, so dont idle them too low
Yeah, I think I learned that the hard way... Will use the trolling motor more next time. thanks for watching.
@@chud327 no problem, i think that is one of the reasons my oppy blew up too
Just put my 4hp briggs on a sears 3 hp bottom end. Well see how she does in the morning!!
Very cool, I hope you make a YT video so I can watch... Shout me out, maybe I will share it... Good luck and thanks for watching.
@@chud327 I'm stoked to get a reply! I've been watching your mud mower vids for years! keep up the hustle brother. and the motor worked out perfect! I'm in central fl and hit up st Leo park/lake just for a test
How did you go?
Please post a spec sheet.. I gotta try this
I didn't actually build this one, but have built 3 others in the past. I have videos of how I did it and I plan to build at least two others in the future. Thanks for watching.
Put a cage around the coupling
Good idea and thanks for watching!
I heard that the engine was knocking now, you should make a video blowing it up
Funny thing is this is probs more reliable than the standard outboard motor lol..😅
Love the ingenuity.Great job.
Kind of disappointing there's no PFD devices(LIFE PRESERVERS)within reach of all, especially the children.
I'm just south of you on Lake Eustis in Tavares Florida Chud.Keep it up,have fun, keep on building but SAFETY FIRST.
Those kids need you and you them. You know how many idiots ply our great waterways.Best to you,Gator.
wich mower was the downer?
None, I actually bought this one like it is. Thanks for watching.
im on salt water wish my 150hp was air cooled, Ferries by me kick up a lot of debris
It is 16MPH or KM/H
16 MPH, thanks for watching!!
I was decently accurate I said it would be between 12 to 20 mph just seeing how many people are in the boat
I have a b&s 22 hp I'm thinking about doing this with
Nice, I am about to do it with a 19 or 21 horse. Keep me uptodate on your build and thanks for watching.
Me too, Have a Kohler Courage SV620 597cc 22 hp, Cant wait to try this on my 10ft jon.
Looks like the St. John's River.
It is just to the north of the St. Johns, this is the St. Marys. Thanks for watching.
all you need is a Trump banner like the other boat
How's she goin'? There's not much wrong with this set up!!! Awesome!!! I'd go for the 4th motor!!! I'd love to see it!!! Take care!!
Thanks so much, I will try to get on that #4 real soon. thanks for watching.
Great video. New subscriber! Peace!
I think you are missing some performance. That lower unit gearing and prop pitch was designed for a motor that turned higher RPM. Would take more fabrication but i think you could get more speed if you ran two pulleys to increase the shaft/prop speed.
Still awesome builds
i have thought of doing that, but like you said, more fabrication and I am not there yet. I do plan to try and build a jack plate, maybe that will help out a bit too. Thanks for watching.
I thought I saw. A 6 gallon outboard tank and an in-line filter. Is that engine gravity said with gas how does it suck up the gas from the tank?
This engine has a little fuel pump on it that fights the gravity. thanks for watching.
What size motor was this? I just picked up a 21hp motor I'm going to use.
I don't know on the mercury foot, I would guess anywhere from 20-40 horse and the briggs is about a 18 horse. Good luck with your build and thanks for watching.
Did you weld the shafts together?
thru haul exhaust would be cool I think ima build one thanks for the idea ! Cheers
Yes and if you do, let me know how it turns out. Thanks for watching!!
Runs almost as fast as my 35 Johnson👍🏼
Nice, I guess I better hop it up a bit... now I just need to get on some of your catfish. Thanks so much for watching.
I want to ask a question about the lights you installed on your craftsman zero turn. I have a similar model Cub Cadet. How did you run the wiring from the lights to the switch and battery? I didn’t see a place under the mower to run and mount the wire. You didn’t show that in the video and the comments are closed for that video. Thanks
I think I showed it in the video and I wish theTube wouldn't cut off my comments... I will try to turn them back on. Thanks so much for watching.
Cool! That motor was gettin it done!
Yes it was! and thanks so much for watching.
Can you run the exhaust into the water like a normal boat? That would probably quite it down, I don't know much a out boating lol
I may try that on the next one and thanks for watching.
Awesome 👍 never knew that was even possible way cool .
How do you get fuel from the tank to the engine? Most mower engines are gravity feed. Never seen one with a fuel pump.
This one has a fuel pump on it, there are some mower with fuel pumps, but I don't know what percentage. Thanks for watching.
Those opposed Briggs motors are best ever made, a little port work they make another 6 hp easy
That is very cool and I love the way they sound. thanks for watching.
Excellent choice for a boat motor, those things are really hard to kill, got 4 of them lying in my barn. That motor must drink the gas.
I didn't look to see how much gas was gone. I have 3 of them now. Thanks for watching.
Can this set up lay down like a normal outboard for transport or does it have to stand upright so oil doesn't leak out. Also does the leg need to pump water so it can stay cool
I have some single cylinder homemade boat motors that can lay down carb side up, but not this one. this one can lean up on the back of the boat and that put the carb up in the air, but if you lay it down, it would be an oil spill going on. You would want to drain the oil before going horizontal with it. The leg does not need water pumped to stay cool, that was just for the orig engine. Thanks for watching.
@@chud327 thanks for that ill build one once I get my rear bar built then. Thanks you
This is so cool im looking for a setup I have the engine where do I find the setup for the propeller etc
I have found them on facebook marketplace, the last one that I am currently building was free. I would one at the recycle center for $40. I found one at the dump for free... Thanks so much and thanks for watching.
I wonder how would one of those motors, maybe a smaller engine, work on a pelican bass raider
I have a couple smaller if you want to try one out. thanks for watching.
do you remove the water pump?
Usually no, but on the next one, I did. thanks for watching and for the comments.
@@chud327 do they blow water from any where on the ones you didn't remove water pump on ? thanks for yer help ive got one 90 % done
How do the barrel boats handle wakes from other larger boats passing by?
Pretty good, but I haven't hit any really big ones yet. Maybe next time we are at the river and thanks for watching.
That is so cool dude. I like that camo on the lower unit. You going to duck hunt with it?
Thanks so much and maybe some day. I was pleased with the speed, now I plan my next build, thanks for watching.
You could possibly squeeze another mile or two if you trimmed motor .
Yes, I need to do more adjusting and experimenting with it and thanks for watching.
I think those Mufflers are quieter than most mufflers
True and sounded pretty good too. thanks for watching. Did you hear how loud my most recent build is? Sounds like a harley.
That is kicking some ass!
I have my eye on a 10hp bottom unit. Looking at a 6.7hp mower head. I am pushing a sail boat so no need for fast as it is a faty, (wide) 900 pound. Should I need a larger motor you think?? I'm told a 4hp BOAT motor is sufficient for my 16 footer. Thanks!! You da man!
larger would be better I guess, but this may be just what you need. I have a 2 horse johnson foot with a bout a 3.5 horse briggs, I have used it a bunch. It is not fast, but better than paddling. Good luck and thanks for watching.
@@chud327Biger is better..what she said too..🤫.
