  • Both Nina's grandfathers served in the KNIL, and in 1951 they were brought to the Netherlands on a service order with the promise that they would soon be able to return to a free Moluccan state. That never came, and this still hurts Nina and her family. August's grandpa and grandma were East Indies Dutch. His grandfather was conscripted into the KNIL, and his grandmother was imprisoned in a Japanese prison camp. After the war, they were forced to come to the Netherlands. They set their sights on the future and never spoke about their traumatised past. As a new generation, August wants to look the past straight in the eye. He actively engages with his Eurasian identity, and this is reflected in his work as is spoken word artist.
