It makes sense if you think about it. They’re talking about noticing things that are similar but not the exact same. Ice water same thing different types of matter. Steak is the meat of a cow but you’re not going to a farm and calling the cows steak. Alright everyone. Think I cracked the code on these lyrics. So, the main theme is its title: Look-a-likes. This theme plays when Sonic fights Metal Sonic. They are lookalikes, but fundamentally different to each other. It starts with... "On a Sunday, riding my bike/drinking my coffee, I notice many different things that look alike." So, the subject is in a relaxed position, not unlike Sonic himself lazing about on the beach at the start of the OVA. They idly, passively observe that some things look simillar. The lyrics can also be misheard as "I'mma Sonic fighting Robotnik" which I think was actually intended. I mean, that's what the OVA is very basically about. And during the fight with Metal, Sonic is in a way also fighting Robotnik, and himself finding many things that lookalike: the Badniks he fights and the animals he saves, Robotnik himself and the other humans and finally: himself and Metal. "Ice and water, steak and cow, autumn this year and last year, spark and burn, rain and cloud, A,B,C,D..." On the surface, this is just the singer exclaiming these look-a-like things, but the more you think, the more these are actually reflective of some overarching themes in the whole franchise. Ice is solid, hard, cold and not accomodating to life. It represents Robotnik and his mechanized world. Water is free-flowing, flexible, natural and allows for life to thrive. Steak and cow being the same only would make a sense as lookalikes to a greedy capitalist who only sees profits and utility in things, and not the life and feelings of animals. But if you live around nature, all autumns are special and different. This can even point to a certain anxiety Robotnik might have over his life seeming to not change year by year. His own mechanical utopia would never change or age... Spark and burn, rain and cloud refer more to cause and effect. Metal Sonic's creation was the effect of Sonic's own existence. Although he was created only a few days ago, he was already filled with massive amounts of data regarding Sonic, Robotnik, Tails, other humans etc. Also, the lyric can be read as "Cause you're on a go, I was born" which also reflects that the purpose Metal was created was to surpass Sonic's speed. And once more, the lookalikes. These ones are from the full version, not this one: Air and oxygen - the natural thing we know of, breathe and experience and the distilled component part of air which on its own is toxic. Money in middle, starting speech - politics and economics, things which often become corrupted when one colludes with the other. History and history books - reading about something ain't the same as experiencing it, knowing deeply what it is. Metal's data about Sonic's history of rivalry with Eggman will never give him the full picture. Night and universe - The starlit sky makes one think of space and the universe. Human ocean, foot in pool - actually dunno about this one Imagery and in real life - again, visual data isn't the same as reality. If Metal relies on his visual sensors for comprehension, he'll never win, especially with a rival that can move as fast as sound or light. "A long time ago, one caveman, had a busy life, making tons of names" A mirror to the previous line. This can refer to Robotnik's endless scientific pursuits, megalomaniacally recreating mechanized animals, renaming them wanting to have a sense of control over nature from the ability to name and understand everything he can. The singer cheekily replies to this mad pursuit with a "must've had a busy day doin' all that." "Everything is born from this planet A number, a TV, even thoughts that entertain Everything came out of this planet A boyfriend, a pencil, even your new videos" This is the antithesis to Robotnik's worldview and this passive or dismissive attitude to life. Even his own machines, numbers, TVs, entertainment, tools, videos, even dakimakuras(hah) are made of the same materials as nature and animals and grass. So we need to have respect for those aspects of life as well. And just as much, Metal also came from this world. And so, even though he's a machine, he should also respect the world around him, because it's the same as him. This is even more important because the plot of the OVA is about Metal destroying the glaciers of the sky continent and as auch causing a chain reaction that would lead to utter destruction. So this is like a plea for Metal to stop, because even he and Robotnik will be destroyed in the process. This mirrors the still ongoing struggles with global warming in out own world and the self-destructive tendencies of companies and rich people to misinform other about and ignore the issue at hand, which ultimately they will not benefit from, either. The final line of the extended version is... "I notice new and universal lookalikes" So now these are not just surface-level comparisons. In the end of the OVA, Metal Sonic actually rejects Sonic's hand to be saved, acting against his own self-preservation instincts as a robot and developing a sense of pride, of identity. Maybe even realizing his own imperfection and the deeper connection he had to Sonic after being beaten by him, as well as the self-destructive nature of his goals. They both noticed a new way in which they were alike - a deeper, unspoken one. But, at the end, Metal realized that lookalikes aren't the same. "There can be only one Sonic"

Also for the Human ocean and foot in pool, in this lens, I think it would be comparing living life to simulating it. Like putting your foot in a pool can give you a miniscule idea of what the ocean feels like, but the actual ocean is on several different levels and can never be replicated.

There's a few people I know who dont understand why this is the main theme of the OVA, so I figured I'd clear it up for people who dont quite get it. While it's never directly referenced in the song, this song is referencing how much Metal Sonic and Sonic look alike to the characters in the series. (although they really dont look that much alike.)
I guess kinda similar to SA2 where basically no one could tell the difference from Sonic and Shadow even though they're even more un-alike compared to Sonic and Metal.
Dr.Robotnik/Eggman: 300 IQ. Always puts self-destruct button on every single one of his masterpieces. Dr.Wily: IQ matching Dr.Light's. Always has eight (9-12 If you count the extra bosses) remarkably powerfull robot masters, but never lets them gang up on his enemy and always puts them so far away from eachother... also makes them have the secret to eachother's weaknesses. ..... These two have alot in common.

I think this makes sense from Metal Sonic's perspective, as he was born for the sole purpose of being Sonic's look-alike. The lyric "Cause you're on the go, I was born" particularly stands out.

Man this OVA was weird. Keep in mind, I'm a huge weeab, so I came in expecting the standard weird anime shenanigans and just assumed that everyone who had reviewed this movie just weren't used to anime, but I still found a lot of stuff in this movie really bizarre. oh god the nostalgia, I remember walking into blockbuster and picking up this movie on VHS and not knowing what it was, one I watched it it was no doubt the greatest thing to my 9 year old mind, Re-watching it and while the "greatness" had faded a tad it is still an enjoyable watch and window back to my childhood :')

This used to the THE Sonic movie back when I was kid. Now, There's 3 live action films about Sonic. This movie will forever be THE Sonic movie for me.

There's a few people I know who dont understand why this is the main theme of the OVA, so I figured I'd clear it up for people who dont quite get it.
While it's never directly referenced in the song, this song is referencing how much Metal Sonic and Sonic look alike to the characters in the series. (although they really dont look that much alike.)
I guess kinda similar to SA2 where basically no one could tell the difference from Sonic and Shadow even though they're even more un-alike compared to Sonic and Metal.
I like how the Metal Sonic theme in Sonic 4 is similar in rhythm to this song, just faster.

Man this OVA was weird. Keep in mind, I'm a huge weeab, so I came in expecting the standard weird anime shenanigans and just assumed that everyone who had reviewed this movie just weren't used to anime, but I still found a lot of stuff in this movie really bizarre. But I had such a good time watching it, and Metal Sonic is my boi, and since it's basically Metal's movie more than anything I can't help but love it

oh god the nostalgia, I remember walking into blockbuster and picking up this movie on VHS and not knowing what it was, one I watched it it was no doubt the greatest thing to my 9 year old mind, Re-watching it and while the "greatness" had faded a tad it is still an enjoyable watch and window back to my childhood :')
