How To Screed Concrete for Beginners - Is This Too Fast or Too Slow!

We're talking a little speed screeding in this video about how to screed concrete. How fast is too fast and what is considered slow.
As I was editing this video, I timed how long it took us to screed this 36' x 24' garage concrete floor. The total time it took to screed was 7 minutes and 15 seconds.
The total yardage was 14 yards and the square footage was 864.
When we screed concrete, we don't intentionally try to hurry. The pace we used in the video is about the same pace we always use. The only time we may try to speed up is when we feel the concrete is "hot" and it's setting up faster than usual.
In the case of this garage floor, the actual screed time was about normal for most of the concrete guys I know in our area.
What do you think about how fast or how slow a concrete floor should be screeded at?

Nothing better than watching real pros at work!
Thank You!
Don't be fooled DIY folks. These guys are masters at getting the right amount of concrete in the right place, that is why screeding is so easy for them. Moving heaving concrete around is a massive effort and they are SO good at putting it in the right spot the first time so they don't have to move it twice (or more).
Everything said above is meant in massive respect to Mike and crew. As a contractor who only occasionally does concrete, I can speak from experience.
So true, these guys make it look so easy. There skill levels and strength second to none

Small pads and siewalks is where diy should start and work up from there, Mike and his crew make it look so easy.
Very true
Like a well oiled machine watching Mike Day and crew crushing it in 2024!!!
Hats off to you guys, you keep it rolling!
Thanks Tony!
That's a solid crew right there, everyone working in sync. It's a beautiful thing!!!
Thank you!
I did a 15'x22' pour this past weekend and it gives me a lot of appreciation for how good you guys are.
Thats a good speed imo. Ive seen some amigos go wide open and they always will have a hump or dip.
Come alongs rule! Many many 20+ yds. me and Smitty did with two guys, one trainee I would have to constantly talk to and teach as we went.😂 Love watching your crew bang ‘em out‼️👍
Thank you John!
Super fast you make it look easy, after covid i had the pleasure of training a new crew, wow was that frustrating it had been so long with my experienced crew that i forgot about the growing pains that come without having atleast 1 experienced guy other than myself. They got it though.
That's quick Mike, great work fellas!
Thanks 👍
I have used rear dumps many times over the years. Power screed or two guys on a stick really depends on the guys behind you with the comealongs and how good your pads are. You guys do a great job! Have a good week!
Great tip!
Man that is making concrete work look beautiful
Thank you!
Back when I use to pour concrete the company had 4 different screeds they had handles on it so one guy can screed and the rest of the guys just racked! A good racker makes it easier on the guy on the screed when you use manual screed!
Mike Day and crew putting it down

Hello!
Never used a power screed. We always set high screeds up and strike it to high screed. I have been considering getting a vibratory screed, thats why Im here. Clean work.
Looking good Mike
"Yahds." :) I would never attempt this, but there's something very cool about watching guys who know exactly what they're doing. You make it look so easy.
Have a nice weekend Mike!
ANOTHER NICE JOB MIKE ....YOU GUYS DO SUCH GOOD WORK!
Love your channel, you guys do great work. As a concrete man myself I am a big fan of the vibratory screed, it makes the job so much easier.
Thank you!
I always wanted to try a power screed. Always did it the old fashioned way.
Good job guys looks great 5 stars
In New Zealand we only have rear dump concrete trucks wish we had the front loaders!
Why we don't see how change direction the guy with the walking in backwards with that long machine ,
I saw that was cut off the moment , I would like see that , great job .
Oh you make me happy, gorgeous pour gentlemen, professionally perfect!!!
Is that how subcontractors are set up in California? Around here usually the guy is doing the walls. Sub base and flat work are all the same. Sometimes the concrete contractor will hire the dirt work, but a lot of times that's hired through the general contractor.
Good job , couldn’t have made it look any easier. Y’all are professionals
no wire mesh or rebar reinforcement?
you make it look easy, do you order your concrete with a smaller pea stone or a pump mix?
No, We order standard 3500 mix with 3/4 stone.
Would love to see how much m3 you guys pour in a year 5-6days a week that’s a lot of mud
Excellent work
HELLO AND THANK YOU ,HOW TO DETERMINE BAD OR REJECT CONCRETE? THANKS AGAIN
All i seen here in Ontario Canada is rear dumps, never seen the front dumps.
Same out here in BC. I feel like if we did have front-discharge mixers, they would definitely cut into some of our most gravy pump work.
can they dig out underneath to make room for the front dumps?(just kidding) Great videos
We always poured the floor with the footers and everything
If you use power screed on 8ft wide driveway would you run the power screed on the 2x4s or just inside the 2x4s
Is it not custom to use rebar or mesh in a garage floor? Serious question.
Most the jobs we do like this are engineered to do with fibermesh, 3500 psi concrete with water reducer. I'm a sub so I don't have a say, just hired to pour and finish the floors.
Hey Mike! Would you and the guys like to a mini working vacation and come to VA in a month??
I've got a 28 x 44 x 5 slab to do at my place with premium working conditions all the way! 😁
Nice and flat. I’m interested, is the Powerscreed more accurate than the hand screed? We hand screed everything, using the one man method
Eventually it is, after you get the hang of it.
Mike do you steel finish or power trowel concrete with air ?
That’s way too slow Mike you gotta pick the speed up. Just kidding pour time was probably 25 minutes that’s wild! Keep up the work I’ve been learning and slowly building my own concrete side jobs in minnesota.
Do you ever pour driveways ?
Sometimes, there's not a lot of people ask for those in Maine.
I noticed that use differant types of vibrating screeds, could you or have you ever used a roller screed or your thoughts on them?
I haven't used one yet, if someone wants to give me one, I'll try it.
Great work Mike, no one standing around, everyone has a job to do. I've done a few shed floors and in Aust we have a warm climate. Most times the shed is already erected so form work is minimal. The last one was 16m x 6m with two drainage points at approx 5m and 10m, running through the centre. We put the correct slope in using hand screed around the drains and used a vibrating screed on flat sections then bull float it. Basically, dividing up the floor into different sections. Just about every floor Ive seen you do is flat. Would be good to see a floor that has drainage sections and flat sections, can you get a slope using a vibrating screed for example?
I've got a lot of videos showing us screeding around drains in YT. We hand screed them for precise slopes.
Майк привет тебе и твой команде. Подскажи пожалуйста какова стоимость вашей работы для этого объекта, сколько заплатил заказчик?
Oh the soup! That makes it easy to screed, but weakens the slab.
Another "wet" comment, you gotta educate youself by listening. I use water reducer for more flow and stronger concrete.
@@MikeDayConcrete Could of fooled me. It looks like 5.5 - 6 inch slump after you added the water reducer. You need to expect "wet" comments from time to time if you like publicizing so much of your work, comes with the territory . I just know that adding to much water does weaken concrete, and not to many people are aware of a water reducer or other Concrete chemical admixtures. And not every video do people see you stress or state "water reducer" agents in the videos. But that mix looks very easy to manage vs. say a standard 4 inch slump or thicker sometimes when code calls for it. Thanks for the clarification, and the videos.
In the crew I work in, my fellow finishers stand against my straightedge to keep me from moving on. The foreman dumps the concrete and therefore dictates the pace, not me.
Where is reo
Looks good, get the diamond clear out😅
Anyone can work with a slump like that! Try a 4" slump see how easy it is, had to do that for 20+ years on commercial spec jobs!
I completely agree and I didn’t vote for FJB.
@@JBekus And Epstein didnt kill himself
I poured 4" slumps for many years, then I smartened up and started using water reducers.
So easy when its nice and loose
Easy
Anyone who has anything negative to say about this concrete pour, must have voted for joe biden.
I didn’t know Biden voters worked blue collar. I ain’t met one yet😂😂😂
I ain’t ever met a biden blue collar worker😭😂
When Mike said Eric in the background was a school teacher, my first thought was cool. It was always neat to hear that that nerdy science teacher was into something you could relate to. Made you realize that others are more like you than ya think. Then my second thought went off. Hmm. A school teacher eh? Ya know who he probably voted for😢
Thirsty a$$ fools , anything to get a word in thru there android or pc.. trying to make a dizzy a$$ political move thru a concrete vid On YT.🫣🙃
Don’t worry, there aren’t any Biden voters watching. They are all tuned into “other” videos….lol
That looked pretty flat!
Did concrete for 42 yrs in Wisconsin. Fiber is garbage . We always poured 4k lb concrete and wire mesh, pulled into concrete where it belongs. How do you like power trowling that fury shit.
I completely agree and I didn’t vote for FJB
It's required by code in a lot of cities here in Ohio nowadays. Some places either wire or fiber. Some places require both fiber and wire. If you've ever torn one out, you know wire is stronger. But of course, wire rusts and expands so it's only lasting 20 or 30 years tops. But that's okay I guess here. Might be different in warmer climates.
We use micro-fiber, you don't see any "fury" stuff.
That thing looks super flat nice job
7:15 what are you guys sleeping c'mon it's only 56,000 lbs there's 4 of ya that's only 14,000 lbs a person. Just kidding that impressive gentlemen well done
Mike do you steel finish or power trowel concrete with air ?
Yes, just have to know how to do it..
