There is a hand in House and it’s flushed down the toilet. Watched it as a kid and for the better part of a decade I would not sit completely down on a toilet. Had to hover in case a hand crawled up the pipe. Got to the point I forgot why I was doing it. Then I saw the movie again and the trauma came rushing back.

My favorite was always phantasm 2. Seeing that poster displayed inside the theater was mind blowing. Wasn’t used to seeing many horror posters displayed in the theater. Still love that artwork. Also return of the living dead with the punk zombies spray painting the gravestone. Perfection to me.
Night of the Demons cover used to freak me out. I never rented it as a kid cause of it. I finally see it as a grown man on 4K, now it''s one of my favorite horrors.
Some other great VHS covers are Demons (1985), Pet Sematary (1989), Child's Play (1988), Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 (1986), A Nightmare on Elm Street 3 (1987), and A Nightmare on Elm Street 4 (1988).

When I was a kid in the 80's/90's, I used to always see this creepy horror cover in the movie rental stores in my town.I can't remember the name, but I remember it was a girl facing forward with part of her face missing exposing her skull underneath. If anyone knows the title of the movie, let me know.
The Company of Wolves (which in my opinion, the movie did not live up to) Don't Go In The House Carrie (with that split-screen image) Scanners Those are the 4 that fascinated me as a kid.

I was born in 1981, and whenever my parents took me to the video store, I'd wander into the horror section and obsess over the covers. Some that really stuck with me were April Fool's Day ( I loved that a woman had her hair braided into a noose on that one), Dolls (still remember the line - They walk. They talk. They kill.), Sleepaway Camp with the knife stabbed through the sneaker, Dead Alive (I always thought it was a robot in the mouth of the person on the cover), and of course Chopping Mall with the bag of body parts. There's so many more and I wonder if my parents ever noticed their little girl obsessing over gory VHS cassettes. 😂
I was born in 81 also. I loved all those movies. Sleepaway Camp 2 was one of my favorites. I probably rented every horror movie from every video store in my area. I miss those days. Going to the video store to pick out movies with friends or family. Stocking up on snacks on the way home. The movies were so much better back then.
Was there at the dawn of VHS in the early 80’s. August 30 1983 we rented our first movie: “For Your Eyes Only”. From then on we visited our local video stores about every weekend and things went crazy when the father of a classmate opened one about next doors. @ I fortunately had friends and later girlfriend(s) with whom I went to the “Videotheek” (as they were called in Dutch) regularly. Especially with girlfriends not always the movies I prefered to see. But hey, how many times can most people watch The Warriors, Friday the 13th, Nightmare on Elmstreet, Dirty Harry, Alligator or the entire James Bond series?😄😉😂

I remember going in a rental video store with my parents and there were all of the sections of comedy, drama, action and horror movies. I just couldn't go near the horror section all of those vhs covers frightened me. But now these covers are classics and I appreciate them.
I have great memories of waking up and down the horror isles of Hollywood Video 📼 and Blockbuster. I even remembered the ole mom & pop dingy lookin video rental store that used to be super close to my grandmas house lol I rented all the Halloween’s, Friday’s, Nightmares. But the one franchise i didn’t dare to watch was Night of the Demons. Those covers freaked me out man! Especially the 2nd one! Now, I have all 3 on vhs 📼 and they’re lots of fun! Can’t beat the old horror movie covers!!

This was great. Took me down memory lane. No doubt my experiences in video stores back in the day plays a huge part in my physical media collecting today. Much respect to the artists, concept designers, photographers, etc. that created so many iconic VHS covers. For me, when it comes to horror, Fright Night is my personal #1. Yeah, something about those teeth just scared the living daylights out of me as a kid. Now, as an adult, I appreciate the beauty of such a perfectly designed image. Iconic. Love the channel. Frankenhooker was one of the best covers. There were so many great ones back then. I must've rented every single horror movie available when I was a kid. The Stuff, Serpent and the Rainbow, Re-Animator, I could go on for days.
Tales from the Crypt for me (The British one from the 70s). The Skull with just one Eyeball left looking right at you used to freak me out. As for the 80s, I would go with City of the Living Dead, The Howling, Dead and Buried, New York Ripper and Hellraiser. Also, You got to watch Demons 2 (and Demons 1). Think of them as a Italian Evil Dead, but in a Cinema and a Tower Block.
I'm probably old enough to face my fears now, but the art for Demons 2 and Night of the Demons had that big of an impact on me. The art for City of the Living Dead is also iconic!

I must add, I don't know if there is just something wrong with me or what but I was never scared of horror movie artwork or even the movies themselves. I just always loved horror. I thought the movies were fun and I loved the gore and kills and especially the cool final girls. Never had a single nightmare. I think I've always been much more afraid of real life. I love Demons, but to this day (and you're our forever day-one, Marc, so you may remember this), I haven't seen Demons 2. I watched a portion of the 4K, but didn't go back to finish... Demons though, is the definition of rad, I agree. One of my favorite last scenes in a horror movie ever.
I was about to get pissed because i thought you werent going to mention Night of the Demons and the whoaaaa, 1st spot on the list, amazing, that cover gave me nightmares everytime i walked on the videoclub and passed by its hall
I remember my parents buying our first VHS player a week after my 10th birthday. When we went to the video shop my mum would always tell me off for "accidentally" going down the horror aisle and scaring myself stupid! 😆 The VHS covers that always got me were Nightmare on Elm Street 2, 3, 4 and 5, Michael Jackson's Thriller and Eraserhead.
The good ol' VHS days of horror. I also enjoyed House 2 more than the original. Seems like Nightmare 2 has gained more appreciation over the years. Freddy was possibly at his most sinister in that one. Halloween 2, Trick or Treat, Phantasm 2, Texas Chainsaw 2, Halloween 3: Season of the Witch, and Nightmare 3 are some covers that come to mind.

Some interesting choices. It's a shame you guys didn't get artwork from Graham Humphreys in the 80's, his artwork was iconic here in the UK and still is, I think pretty much my top 5 would be art/sleeves crested by him, his most iconic creation is the original pre-cert Evil Dead VHS sleeve, the artwork and his unique style dree me to that movie! Fun times.
Hey guys fyi an upcoming hardcover book you might want to pick up is - Videotapes From Hell: A Visual History of Cult, Collectible, and Crazy Video Covers. Including a foreword from beloved cult director Joe Dante! Out in January was supposed to have been out in October but got pushed now until January looks like. I preordered this back in April lol.
I distinctly remember being at a neighbor's tag sale when I was about 9 or 10 rummaging through a box of VHS tapes and saw that cover for the first time and it freaked me out big time. I had never heard of it prior and seeing that image with the tagline "Santa's Here" was just... I can't even really put it into words.
14:00 I thought night of the demons was part 3 of demons but was disappointed that it was not. I think it's called CHURCH or something, the true part 3... they talk about it on special features of part 2

Natas: The Reflection had a killer poster, but the movie itself was a total snooze fest. The Dead Pit's box cover art had an embossed zombie with eyes that lit up, so of course you had to rent it, but in this case, the movie was actually decent.
@@CarlKeeling1881 While memorable and badass, we were focusing more on the ones that scared us... ROTLD was (and is) awesome, but I wasn't scared by it as a child. The first ROTLD is a rare case of the movie living up to (and possibly exceeding) the cover... 2, not so much.

Hey guys fyi an upcoming hardcover book you might want to pick up is - Videotapes From Hell: A Visual History of Cult, Collectible, and Crazy Video Covers. Including a foreword from beloved cult director Joe Dante! Out in January was supposed to have been out in October but got pushed now until January looks like. I preordered this back in April lol.

Did anyone else's local video store have the Fright Night cover in rhe shape of a coffin? Much bigger than the other vhs covers?

I distinctly remember being at a neighbor's tag sale when I was about 9 or 10 rummaging through a box of VHS tapes and saw that cover for the first time and it freaked me out big time. I had never heard of it prior and seeing that image with the tagline "Santa's Here" was just... I can't even really put it into words.
It is truly iconic.

I think it's called CHURCH or something, the true part 3... they talk about it on special features of part 2

One of my favorites covers ever is from "Sole Survivor", directed by Thom Eberhardt thar also is one of my favorite horror movies.
Natas: The Reflection had a killer poster, but the movie itself was a total snooze fest. The Dead Pit's box cover art had an embossed zombie with eyes that lit up, so of course you had to rent it, but in this case, the movie was actually decent.

@@CarlKeeling1881 While memorable and badass, we were focusing more on the ones that scared us... ROTLD was (and is) awesome, but I wasn't scared by it as a child.
The first ROTLD is a rare case of the movie living up to (and possibly exceeding) the cover... 2, not so much.
@@russceasetheruss5360 my fault. I remember going to the movies as a kid and the Fright Night poster was in the poster holder on the building. It was very cool to see that one in the video. Brought back memories. This was a great video thanks for posting it.
