Why do Roundabouts Suck? In my opinion.

  • I read that the USA does have roundabouts in their road system, but not very many of them. While countries such as the UK and France have thousands of them. And Australia is installing them like hot cakes too. In this video, I explain why I think Roundabouts suck.
But actually, I do think they are fine in low volume traffic areas, such as around our Housing Suburbs and side streets. The problem though is that our Government's Main Roads Department put them on major arterial roads where all roads into the intersection are busy with high volumes of cars. Then, a phenomenon occurs where certain routes into the intersection end up getting favourable conditions of getting onto the Roundabout, while other routes get completely starved of any opportunities to enter the Roundabout. This is the issue, and I know our Government knows about it, because I am aware of a few Roundabouts that have been retrofitted with Traffic Lights or Slip Lanes to help fix the congestion that occurs, because of the Roundabout's inability to cope.
Sorry for the rant video, but I thought it was an interesting topic to talk about, and to show you an example here in Australia.
