Dokes is one of my fav HW's ever. Could have been so much better, if wouldn't have succumbed to drugs.

      That's true, to an extent.

@@darylwoodard1054 I would say it goes without saying that if you start taking the type of drugs, he was taking, you are going to ruin your career, and your chance of improving.

Michael Dokes would have been a great champion if he would have left drugs alone.

Michael was a terrific amateur fighter and as a pro, he did have all of the stuff to be a real, not an alphabet, champion. Speed, enough power and a good enough chin when he wasn't out coked up until 6am the day of a 4pm fight. By the time he was in his late 20s, he was burned...heavy, poor stamina and a fried brain. What a waste. When I imagine Michael with a Holyfield style dedication to training, the sport and respect for his body and mind, it makes me sad for him. RIP Mr. Dokes. Hope you have found peace.

I totally agree. But in my estimation, Holmes who was the main champion back then wouldn't have been a good opposition for Dokes cause he was smaller and had shorter arms than Larry. However you can make the argument that Dokes was much faster than Holmes. Nevertheless, you're absolutely right, he had a huge potential and could have made a much bigger career, no doubt about that.

@@emzid5105 And he was very intelligent and not just in the ring. It was so sad he was served up as meat for Bowe in his first title defense. The shuffling gait and quick ko was an awful last impression for the public of this very good man and fighter.
