Giant subwoofer for Octave Records

- You all know Paul's love for subwoofers. Well, now he's gone stark raving mad. This is based off of the “martysub” design using their “BTS” “screen depth” cabinet
shop.gsgad.com/
We are using this B&C driver though the Eminence Tour grade 21” is also a great option.

My favorite enclosure for a subwoofer is a nice round tube.
Almost impossible to flex; Don’t need bracing; Lightweight and no internal standing waves due to the curved nature of the circle.
He is dedicated his whole life for music ...sound waves...achieving perfection in sound production. What a beautiful hobby...life long venture. A blessed guy. When music becomes your religion you are a saint.
Bass in the nearfield is the way to go. I have duel 10" subs in my theater placed on either side of the listening position firing directly into it. It is nothing short of amazing.
What does "nearfield" mean in this context?
@@bailey2517 About a meter from the woofer drivers to my ears.
I do that near-field thing too. I have a 10-inch subwoofer in a sealed enclosure placed in the near field, and the deep bass now has more definition and speed, and most of the dips in bass response are now gone. I've got to thank Paul and the wonderful people at PS Audio for this great idea. I don't have to buy a new sub now! Cheers!
Those boxes are literally 75% larger than a clothes drier. Love it.
Probably going to weigh more than a clothes dryer. Those boards are very dense.
Looks to be the BTS boxes from GSG Audio. I have two of them in Baltic Birch with Stereo Integrity drivers. Awesome
dude! for the record- guess who helped Kevin build his first Marty subs back in 2014.
@@williamtomkiel8215 oh yea? That’s pretty cool. I got a pair of mini-Marty’s also. Same drivers.
Paul's gone stark raving mad? LOL. There is a method to the madness. When I see those huge cabinets, it is love at the first sight. Big subwoofers and the laws of physics.
You should check out the 32 inch subwoofer Devon Turnbull of OJAS built for his display at the Lisson Gallery in NYC. That thing was a beast
triple front baffle, that will be a seriously heavy box...love it!
The band Rush on their Time Machine tour had washing machines and tumble driers on stage to the right of the drum kit, you can check on utube, now we all know what they were for, BASS! Thanks Paul
GSG is the only place to go for BASS. I have two 21” Full Marty’s behind my screen and two more 21” Devastators behind my seats… the transducers in the seats are for when the wife is sleeping.
The idea that I should own a particular recording because it was mastered excellently is very odd to me, as I listen to the music for the music, and if it's not a genre or artist that resonates with me, I'm not going to enjoy it no matter how well it was recorded.
You don't understand the point! You need records with assured quality to optimize your system
I've made recording's that qualify. Passion before perfection in the performance, and the same goes for the quality of the recording too. But I still listen to them.❤️
@@mikedupuis9723 but you can have passion and quality at the same time - i have replaced thousands of FLAC files against remasterings and japanese "pressings" which often have a different mastering - some of them are day and night (bass, clarity, less noise)
A recording is just as much of a work of art as a composition or a performance; you're listening to the "performance" of the recording engineer. And it can open a wider window to the composition itself.
Looking forward to see the finished product Paul
When you say near field, are you referring to the front left and right speakers very near to the listener ?? Or the subwoofer placed just a few inches away from the listener ??
Gotta have big speakers if you want big sound! I have a few that size that I built, and they are amazing. Have two more to build
What subs did you use?
@@bailey2517 Mine currently have cheap 18" dayton audio pa460's. They have less low low bass, but better midbass than a true "subwoofer", just because they are very efficient and lightweight, but they reach plenty low in a room for most things. There's plenty of options like dayton ultimax, stereo integrity, LaVoce, B&C, etc all have 18 and 21" versions available depending on your application and budget. If I did it again, I would do 21's this time.. just because why not?
@@Cryptic-1-9-1-1 nice! I'm thinking I wanna get a Dayton ultimax 18 and make a giant PA style speaker for outdoor use. Something where you'll be able to feel bass from some distance. I used a 6.5" sub and you can hardly hear it at all from like 30 feet away but it's tuned to 33hz lol.
@@bailey2517 if you're going to use it for music outside, do something like a bass bin or a horn design and get a speaker that is more suited for music / pro audio, rather than a subwoofer driver. The sub drivers are more efficient at very low frequency and take a ton of power in the higher bass to get decent output. Pro audio drivers don't go as low, but are generally super efficient in the higher bass and you'll be much happier
@@Cryptic-1-9-1-1 ooh I see. Is there any 18" sub you'd recommend for that? I want it to sound good down to 30hz but below that isn't a big deal. I also want it to be punchy around 45-60hz.
for great bass demo try
track 2 of the "Fifth Element" with bruce willis movie OST. that synth note that dives downt to 0 hz. one of the coolest deeper bass ever recorded.
another great one is in Oblivion movie when tom cruise is hanging from a rope.. it breaks and he falls. listen to the falling effect.
@Montréal 🇨🇦... merci beaucoup, PRiViLEGE ❤️
woot Caleb!! :)
For DC, you need the Thigpen subwoofer!
Sealed or Ported?
While it’s trendy to have small packaged subs… nothing replaces a large high quality subwoofer. I’m running a 15” sub and I’m not a bass head and generally listen at lower volumes. I find larger subs are better at lower volumes.
Depends on room acoustics and positioning
is it 18 02 12 in the diameter
since this subwoofer box is that large and are going to be sealed in the end, why not have dual 18" in a similar size box?
i know its more work and require more dsp to make it work. but think of the glory :)
I was thinking you guys would have went with the 30 incher Fostex sub that has the audio community abuzz!
I have a single 15" in a 130 litre ported box, a bit smaller than this but I have only 1 so I find I have to position it between the floor standers I have to reduce the standing wave issue you touch upon. Anywhere else in the room and you can even hear where the sound is coming from which is obviously no good.
Are those still ported? I cannot spot the reflex port.
Top left side has slot.
Your question should be what temperature do they wash mixed coloureds at and what's the highest spin speed?
Looks like they are designed to be laid down behind a screen and the port would be on the left or the right.
Looks like gsg audio to me , I built 4 18 inch marty cubes that were a kit
Yeah it sure does but notice that there is no port.....
Notwithstanding the bracing, those cabinets look like they might be pretty lively at the frequencies involved.
Gotta fill it with no rez
Flossy carter from youtube would be proud of this
Couldn't you also accomplish that by getting treatment with proper rates and levels of absorption in the low frequencies?
They look awesome. Should nickname them "the washing machines". They are going to produce clean deep bass. Can't wait to see them in action! Paul, what kind of amplifier is going to power those? Are you planning to custom-make the amps in-house?
You have baffles..✅👍😎🎵🎶🎶🎵
CD only or also as stream?
Thanks Paul. Now the question is obviously: What will you listen to first? Fuga et tokkata e minor?
try track 2 of the fifth element movie OST. that synth note that dives downt to 0 hz. one of the coolest bass ever recorded.
another great one is in Oblivion movie when tom cruise is hanging from a rope.. it breaks and he falls. listen to the falling effect. great bass
Darrude Sandstorm of course
@@idray986 This version: ua-cam.com/video/H9r597vJbSQ/v-deo.html - of course.
Hi Paul, big audio things, going big?...monohifi HD Inventor here!...not trolling, going big is going bigger right?
Those B&Cs only tune down to about 40 hz unless you are going to tune them down another octave or so and use tons of eq. Then you run into excursion, distortion and phase issues. Good luck.
I wonder how they get to this at the FR30 "28Hz-20kHz (-6dB)" He says 25Hz but it's not and there are still no measurements out there from this speakers.
@@c.p.2807 8" drivers should be able to do 30 hz without issue. I built speakers with 8" drivers and in room response is -3db at 22 hz. But, there is a huge difference between Pro audio drivers and hifi drivers. Pro drivers are mainly designed to have high sensitivity which ultimately raises Fs and Vas. Higher tuning and larger boxes.
I also have a PA sytem I built with two 18" drivers with a -3 db of 36 hz, but they will do 137 db.
Btw. The GSG 21" Sub is tuned to 17Hz and for home theater.
@@c.p.2807 yeah, I looked into it and they do what I thought. Tune it real low and use eq to boost the lowend.
Really should have got a pair of gr research open baffle subs
Probably out perform this throw together with no thought kit. Which I foresee vibrating like a pig. The more I see Paul talk about speakers, the less I think he really knows, and he just a salesman.
@@DodgyBrothersEngineering this thing needs braced like a mofo with serious wall dampening...
@@ClassifiedBrief yep, while it looks like it has a lot of bracing, none of it really seems to brace the opposing side walls. If I was going to use an off the shelf cabinet like that I would probably get some 2" x 2" lengths and screw them into the opposing walls. On top of which I would stuff it hard with something like no rez, and put another layer of MDF on the outside. Going off the pictures on their website it looks like a single layer of MDF or ply that is probably only 16mm / 18mm. That is going to beat like a drum at high SPL.
@@ClassifiedBrief on top of which I wouldn't use a boxed sub in the first place for music. I have open baffle 18" woofers, and you just can't reproduce that kind of sound with a boxed sub. You could get way more SPL, but not the clean sound you get from open baffle.
@@DodgyBrothersEngineering yeah I totally agree... Hey get some sorbothane disc's for under your sub it makes a HUGE improvement I just put under all my gear subs speskers and holy shit my system took to another level... I have nx otica with a pair of triple driver servo subs
Next you’ll want the Fostex 31-1/2 inch woofers
Thumbs up for titebond!
Just curious, the specs for the 21" woofer say that the frequency range is 30-1000 hz.
Only 30 hz?
Is that because it may be a rating for the bare speaker only, and putting it in a proper enclosure will extend the low range?
I just find it hard to believe that a 21" woofer can only go down to 39 hz when my REL 10" goes down to 17 hz.
ua-cam.com/video/poo6zCFXtKM/v-deo.html
You could get a pair of ear buds to play down to that. Free air response (Fs) means nothing without a dB number attached to it. I bet your REL doesn't play down to 17Hz @ -3dB which is the industry standard for speaker measurement. There are a lot of driver parameters that dictate how low something will play, size is not the be all and end all.
Yeah, 17 Hz with -6 dB :-) ;-)
Paul. " When will that be out. Let me see..."
Me. "Please say for xmas, please say for xmas"
Paul. "... Probably October."
Me.. "YES"
There is a Santa and his name is Paul ...
He didn't say October of this year! LOL.
Ohh yeah..more BASS
That's not the baddest ass subwoofer on the planet!!! Check out the one in Thin Lizzy concerts! That's a woofer! :)
And btw, I agree that the best way to place the sub is by the couch. If only could design a subwoofer that doubles as a couch, that would be just great.
You confuse hifi and PA - different worlds
Is this a re-post?
Yes it has the links now
looks like a big washing machine tub
I see you’ve decided to go with 1 tuba instead of 4 baritones.
I wonder how many of us have the equipment to reproduce the low bass sound from PS Audio records. I admire the dedication from the producer but will it really work for the audiophile buyers?
Easy work but these scammers play with your mind and take your 💰💰💰💰 not too complicated but for some that don't have a clue of how shit works then never mind
I have a 12" sub in one of my systems that is flat to 14 hz, in room. My other system uses 4 8" subs that is flat to 18 hz in room.
deja vu
I'm a bit confused by the Parts Express driver given in the link. From the specs, this looks more like a PA driver that's not really intended to be used to subsonic levels. There are also questions where people ask about using it as a sub and the responses say it doesn't really go below 30 Hz with much output. I suspect Chris will do some magic voodoo on it, but as far as it being a kit that will create the ultimate sub, I'm not seeing that. Maybe I'm missing something?
lots of people have used this driver in a subwoofer setting, it works. nothing about the description says PA, its just have the surround of a pa driver that confuses some people.
@@sudd3660 it actually is a pro driver for PAs. In a ported box it will do 40 hz.
@@analogkid4557 what are the drawbacks from this driver vs another 21" driver you think?
@@sudd3660 most 21" drivers don't tune low from what I have seen. 18s are better.
@@analogkid4557 that is mostly up to moving mass, and the most important for a driver i think is cone stiffness in a small box volume, but this subwoofer is going to have an extra large box.
dsp solves all this anyways, any decent drivers can do 15" in almost any box volume.
Well, Paul, you are a regular Marty McFly, now! Insane!
All respect and I usually love your videos, the way you explain things with simplicity, but here, even with the fact that you have the electronics "in house", I just don't get it. Maybe I am wrong but DYI part MDF enclosure, 18 inch driver in a room(?) , all seem to me so far from the meticulous products you build. I hope there will be a "sequel" to get in much more details about this project and choices made...
Upon thinking about the matter for a minute… I’m wondering if adding some additional bracing ribs to the outside of the box would be helpful. That is an awfully large speaker, with some large box walls. Curved perhaps, kinda in an Art Deco style? 🤔
I'd prefer covering the outside with thick pile carpet for a soft finish, very art deco too, maybe coffee cream colour
...OK! I'm sure that We All wait fot to come finished with anxiety!
I want SVS SB 2000 Pro
They are worth it get two
How many do own subs that large? Drivers that size distortion usually is a big problem.

Tactile transducers in the couch and floor are helpful to the overall experience too… (dat’ bass… dat’ bass… dat’ bass) 😉
In the floor is nonsense - that why you isolate vibrations from couch to floor in such setups
I don’t really like too much bass ,

I've heard and seen 30 inch subwoofers built-in and solid Oak cabinets but 21 inch is cool 🤔
Looks like something to irritate the neighbors within an 1/8 to 1/4 mile away. Just because it can be done does not really mean that it should be done.
The problem with perfect is everything else is between ordinary and great.

A TC Sounds LMS Ultra 5400 (bought new before they went out of business) , two TC Sounds 18" VMP passive radiators, and a Crown IT 9000 HD amp to drive it. Freight alone from the US to Australia probably cost me close to $2000 for the sub and passive radiators. I am trying to make some time to get in my shed and make the cabinet on my CNC. I have done some design drawings, and the walls of the cabinet will be about 2" thick (3 layers of 18mm MDF). I will make that thing Paul has there look like a toy.
It's forbidden for an old man to mix music..When you are getting old you are loosing the hearing in the high frequencies..So how can you mix when you don't hear? It's one of the bad things of nature..
Wrong. Experience is king. People like Bob Clearmountain still do mixes and masterings with zero complaints. He nows how something has to be mixed and sound with his hearing curve. And you can always double check your mix with analyzers and/or a pair of younger ears of your recording engineer (Paul also has one AFAIK).
Last time I checked sub frequencies are at the other end of the spectrum. You don't lose anywhere near as much off the bottom end as you do top end. At nearly 60 I can still near 20Hz fine, but I can only hear to about 13kHz on the top end.
