@@HighTechLab Lessoned performance maybe. A fire is highly unlikely as that single corroded bus is designed to become a usable link. FYI Ive been running these for years purchased a lot of 10 off of eBay.
I have also been running another set of 20 of these panels for about a year and a half before I bought another pallet of them and learned about the recall. Nothing has failed so far, but would absolutely not say that “a fire is highly unlikely” because obviously these panels were recalled for various safety reasons. I will be checking my panels weekly for degradation, and if it becomes apparent they are failing, I will replace them all with brand new panels that have a good manufacturer warranty.
I've been using used Trinas for years with zero issues, they are all in great shape and delivering full nominal rated power. It looks like most of the comments here report the same thing. These are not rip offs, they are great value, your warning about a nearly non-existent problem as far as I can see, there is no reason at all to stay away from used panels, as long as you look them over for any corrosion etc, same as you would for buying a used car. Saying you should stay away from used panels makes about as much sense as telling everybody they have to buy only new cars because there are some crappy used cars out there.
I guess it only leaves more panels for those who know a good deal when they see one. You usually get sufficient info from the comments of videos to fill in the gaps. Then you know what you are getting into.
I bought x4 255 watt panels for $40 each in 2020 ... Samsung. I think they removed from an install and donated to the local re-use store. The hardest part was getting the branch cable for some used enphase m215 micro inverters

I probably purchased over 300 of these and they work absolutely flawless and every bit of the rated power even on cloudy days. But of course you can't use this with a grid-tied system all of them were used on off-grid applications
I just purchased 8 of these exact panals. They seem all good in this batch, upon initial inspection and hookup. Although I will say the spec labels on the backs are probably not originals, probably put on after Trina factory ones were removed. So that must mean something ??
Thanks for the video! How have they been? I just noticed a tiny bit (nothing like you had) on one of my panels. I bought 2 for 190 a few months ago. The output has been 500-550 for these 2 panels together. They did in fact say Trina under the tag lol. Lemme know I'm curious on how they've been.
I am not sure a bad connection would cause a fire. But even if that occurred in one or two of your panels, the fire would be contained within that panel. You could just remove the bad panels from the string (re-wire around each bad panel) or even replace them. It is to be expected that a percentage of used panels may fail. However, buying used panels are still worth it because the remaining good panels will likely function well for another 20-30 years.
used solar for 75$? You just paid way to much for second hand panel. Think they are still worth some money, because they will produce electricity for many years. you can also repair the backsheet. You did great job by providing source links

They're not corroded or as faded as these Trina ones.. but should have bought something new. Sunpower has residential ones up to 415 watts. WOW.. Thanx for sharing.
Was the system calling for full chooch from the modules? With full sun on them (as in sunlight coming in normal to the module plane), put enough of a load on the system that the charge controller runs the PV array at full chooch. Also, check that there is not some other limiting factor, like charge controller current limiting or temperature derating or something. If you can, do a short circuit test on each module.
I bought 8 used panels (they sent TRINA SOLAR) and even though the back had cracks they tested and have performed VERY WELL. I’ve purchased a pallet from Santan solar and a pallet from Signature Solar, all used and great. The Santan solar were 250watt and the Signature Solar were 315 watt I believe. But the reason I posted, my Santan solar panels looks just like those, but with out those issues. Santan solar is a DBA of another company that refurbished those. So your friend of a friend got those from Santan solar, and stored them upside down thus the water issues in the traces. They also look like the 250 watt panels as well. I bought a pallet of 20 Vikram Solar Eldorado UL listed 250 Watt new and didn't install them for a couple years. Then I saw the ones at Santan, looked identical for $40 each so I bought 20 of those. They've been up for a year with 18 (4500 watt) on the east slope of the roof and 18 on the west slope. Worked so well that I went down 6 months ago and bought another 40 for $35 apiece that are slated to go on another roof with east/west. What's strange is the new ones I paid full boat for ($2,850 for 20) developed snail trails on a few before they were even put up? The key to buying used panels is if the label is intact. That is important because panels that have been recalled generally have their labels removed. The issue isn't with used panels, it's with sellers putting panels meant for scrap back on the market. If the panels have had the original labels removed then stay away. There are plenty of used panels with intact labels out on the market. I've personally purchased several pallets of used Canadian solar panels that performed like new. There is no reason to stay away from Trina either. Just make sure they have their original labels intact.
3:30 is not a point of failure. It is an indication of moisture intrusion. It will not catch on fire nor burn. It will cause your inverter to give a "ground fault error" and could stop the entire system from producing any power at all. 10yr solar vet here. You are welcome.

This is all based on supposed issues that May occur. You bought used not New. Your Opinion is just that your opinion. Read your comments. Your are badmouthing a perceived problem not a Real problem. Buck up young man and think before you make a video like this again. Thumbs down.
No, Trina solar had actual fires that were quite devastating. I bought used not knowing they were recalled panels a manufacturer was supposed to destroy. That is a scam!
Sorry about your luck. Buy cheap buy twice.
we went and got some solar word panels i hope they are ok
Did you get brand new or used panels? Did you just order them or have you already installed them? Curious to know what they turn out to be.
@@HighTechLab we got them used 9 for 800
@@JonOffgrid ouch, that’s a bit pricey! What wattage?
@@HighTechLab we went pick them up 240 watts they come off of a
Publix Grocery Huntsville Alabama i do have 2 like them i got 8 years ago they seem to be ok so far

i was looking into buying 10 used tsm-240pa05 at about $95 a peice, and i would have had to drive 6 hours to get there. now i see i wont be making that trip. i have bought lots of used panels and have zero regrets but i am new to this solar world
I bought 40 of these panels from San Tan solar in Arizona this year. So far they seem to be okay. I have them mounted ground mounted on a raise built out of wooden frames.
Damn...pumping some power.
@@ZT_Performance I just connected up a dozen more new 375W panels today. Now I'm pumping some power. Still not enough though... I'm -36 amps on the batteries when the sun is blocked by a cloud. But I go 150 amps positive when the sun is unblocked.
@@basspig I just got started my self
Only pumping 1kw.
How big is your system 14kw ? Lol
@@ZT_Performance Presently two groups of twenty 240W panels and two groups of six 375W panels. Making a measurable 10kW actual at 1pm today.
Santan has the 240watt used, cracked back for only $44. Checkout Smooth-On for 2 part silicones to reseal the back. Examine them before loading them.
How are the holding up?
@@bluyetiinc7553 Not yet installed. Son purchased 3 to power a parked semi but has been OTR since purchasing. I picked them up for him and since I was making the drive, bought a bunch myself. Don't have any of the rest of the system yet, piecemeal to run AC daytime and/or charge EV overnight.
@@jcadult101 thanks. Best of luck.
I bought a couple of these two years ago. They're rated at 250-260 watts. Mine have no green oxidation inside, but they put out far less than they're rated. I'll bet mine are 20 years old or so, because the degradation is about 80-100 watts from new. I'm guessing the were on large grids, and got replaced after losing so much efficiency.
Dude there used, they probably have 10 years of heavy use. I've been buying about or the same panels but I've been paying 45 each and for that money there great full output. Just fuse each string and if you are putting them on those metal shipping containers, I dont think they can catch those on fire . Your pretty safe id say. But please keep us updated on how they work. Also who did you buy from ? I get mine from santan solar
Why not just recoat the back?
What products work well to recoat the back of solar panels?
@@randybecker55 100%silicone roof coating from Home Depot
The issue isn't with used panels, it's with sellers putting panels meant for scrap back on the market. If the panels have had the original labels removed then stay away. There are plenty of used panels with intact labels out on the market. I've personally purchased several pallets of used Canadian solar panels that performed like new. There is no reason to stay away from Trina either. Just make sure they have their original labels intact.
dude if you pay peanuts you get monkeys all your choice to buy cheap
I saw a bunch of these for sale used. Thanks for the info
Try using rubberized spray to preserve the good ones
3:30 is not a point of failure. It is an indication of moisture intrusion. It will not catch on fire nor burn. It will cause your inverter to give a "ground fault error" and could stop the entire system from producing any power at all. 10yr solar vet here. You are welcome.
how to find out which solar panels were recalled?
. If your getting 60 or 72 cell used panels for under .20 cents ,if they put out 93-95% your golden. Buy 5 extra to offset anything. Done.
Know where to get them? I just checked SanTan solar for 240 Volt panels. I only need 12 of them. Then panels are $44 a piece....$559.68 for the panels and $549.00 for shipping averaging $92.00 a panel with shipping. I am open to a better deal of course so if you can help....awesome!
what if you resealed the backs of them because of the cracking
Thanks for the real facts, God Bless!)
I like that "I'm still going to use them" lol
My Trina panels are doing just fine, in Australia.
They were used or brand new? How long have you had them up?
Hyundai 250s cook up at the top and bottom
did you buy them from suntan solar?
Bless you for the warning.
What company are they from?
Do as I say... not as I do.
75 bucks a panel and you think you got ripped off?,,, Hows that?... If thats your thinking then you should shell out $400 a panel for the new Trina or Longi Panels...problem solved
You can get new panels for $.50/watt, it's not much of a savings
I got the same panels for $32 a piece plus shipping. Working good so far. They are doing better than my new Panasonic HIT panels.
And they were used panels? That's a great deal. Did the electrical junction boxes look like the ones on my panels? How long have you had them up?
@@HighTechLab used panels definitely, they had the same warranty sticker over the Trina solar logo. Same replaced backing. Luckily none of them had the boxes like yours. I found them online then the same company had a ebay listing for $53 or best offer, I offered the $32 and they accepted as long as I bought in bulk. Two were damaged during delivery and the seller replacements immediately, I spoke the owner and she was awesome. I've had them operational for about two months and they are producing about 75-80 percent of their rating. About the same as my HIT panels at a 10% of the price.
@@ericzimmerly1 Yep. My lot of 10 have been pretty good.
