I've been using pansies for a couple of years had no idea ground temp alters performance. Your annual garden will look great. Thanks Jim!
Jim, even though I'm in a completely different growing zone than you are, I always find something in each of your videos that is relevant or useful information for me to use in my zone 5a climate. Thank you for that. I love your tip of using an empty nursery container for saving space to plant spring bulbs.
Tulips and daffodils are perennial here in my area, so once the blooms have faded, the foliage needs to die back naturally to feed the bulbs, so they will bloom again the following spring. Looking at the dying foliage of bulbs isn't a pleasing look. To camouflage that ugly foliage, I place metal filigree plant stands over the fading foliage and set a planter filled with annuals on top. That way the foliage is mostly out of sight while it has a chance to die back naturally, while the planter on top takes center stage.
I’ve been using pansies for years, and did not know much of what Jim went over in this video! Thank you, Jim!
Loved the music. Made me smile!
He keeps trying to make us believe the "clown college" thing! I laughed too!
The music is a fun, happy touch.
The music got me! 🤣
I love Pansies they are so beautiful 💕 they look lovely Jim 😀
I do love pansies especially white matrix, and have been successful in the fenced in backyard to avoid rabbits eating them. Thanks Jim for all the info, love your video's.
The education I got busting my butt on an annual installation crew for some big landscapers, decades ago, has been invaluable. Sure can't plant 30+ flats a day but my little beds sure look good!
A little elevation with some good planting medium makes a world of difference.
@ HortTube with Jim Putnam do you pinch stretched plants or not?
I'm hoarding the last of my compost too 😂
Wow, I always learn something every time I watch your videos. Thanks so much!
It’s always nice to see them growing throughout the winter in the south. In the north we usually plant them in early Spring. I wish they were more available in the north for a Fall/early Winter flowering.
Thanks for all of the info... I had no idea about the soil temperature testing.
Planted my pansies yesterday
Fayetteville NC
I started my pansies from seed a few months ago, just to see if I could. I just got some in pots last week, and still have a few more in the tray. Some are blooming, so far so good.
So glad you zoomed in so we could see the stretching you spoke of.
We all know that one of Jim's superpowers is Super-Speed-Planting and he doesn't actually even need to speed up the video!
Oh that time lapse music 😁
Great information. Thanks!
I am in Dallas Georgia zone 7b, and had already planted pansies and voilas 3 weeks ago and they died😢. Thank you for letting me know that I should check my soil temperature.
@@Usernameblahblahnblah I've bumped 6 pack plants into 2 1/2" for a month or so. Works pretty well.
I always bought my pansies when they showed up and big box way to early but that's the best selection. Brought home and I was lucky enough to have a frig in the garage so they stayed in frig until planting.
That's a good call
Some good stuff.
Do you have deer issues? I’m in Alpharetta GA and the deer love to feast and I do use deer fence any other suggestions as I know they LOVE tulips thank you!
In 8b, we have the same problem with a good selection of pansies available too soon for planting, and only leftovers when it's time to plant. Just wait, the big box stores will try to sell us pansies in May. Can we have a group hissy fit?
The blue store near me has lots of pansies right now, but the color selection is not as varied as last year. One year I will attempt to start my own.
I planted viola last week in the ground and in pots. I have more to get out front. That area is warmer than my backyard so I wait a bit on those. Plus it’s hard to yank out those vincas that still look pretty darn good. I may have planted mine too close. I also planted some snapdragons and for some reason the bronze ones are not growing straight!
Same here in N. Georgia. I can't yank my New Guineas yet, they're still too pretty but the regular Impatients are flagging. Saw a fritillary butterfly today so the sad Zinnia can stay a while too.
@@katiekane5247 I’m in GA as well, Marietta. My regular impatiens are starting to stretch. I have some in a pot with foxtail fern. I brought the pot into the garage last winter and was super surprised when my white impatiens came back. All I did was cut them back.
I envy your super loose soil. Rocky soil here in Central Texas is so hard to work with.
Pansies are mighty hungry!
I planted 3 pots with clearance pansies 50 cents each!
Is that a white beauty berry to the left? Great video! The music reminded me of Curb your Enthusiasm
How warm does your soil have to be for organic fertilizer to "wake up?"
Hahaha love that music at 5:22 (:
Hello, thank you for your advices about planting, but, I didn't find anything about new plants they come up itself after flowering "mother" plant. 🤔 I have them a lot and I don't want to kill them. I am in UK. It is a middle of September. Please. Any advice? Thank you. 🙂
We use Mums. We do Pansy in spring. Cold tolerant.
I’ve been just walking pass the pansies waiting for just the right time. Thankful for some rain in Raleigh and I hope I can find some at local shops rather than big box stores.
Do you plant garlic? If so, when do you plant it?
I found some good ones at Campbell road today. It is time to plant garlic.
I am unable to lean over due to a back injury. So, I have a kids plastic stool that I use when I need to plant low to the ground. Its a little hard to get up & down....but no back pain after planting or weeding!
I'm almost there as well. Definitely not fun!
I’ve lost a lot of color so the pansies will brighten up my spaces. Zone 9.
You don’t loosen the bottom and side soil of the pansies before planting?
👋😃
We cannot get pansies here in my northern KY region. Not sure what's up with it but I sorely miss them. I think I'm going to be proactive and order seeds for next year.
Violas and panolas might best for you. A little more cold hardy
@@JimPutnam Hey great tip! Thank you very much indeed.
Hi Jim. Where can I find pine bark soil conditioner? What am I looking for? Is top soil kind of the same thing?
If you are in the southeast it will sold as pine bark soil conditioner, soil conditioner, or pine bark fines. Garden centers will have it. I actually got it at lowes today
@@JimPutnam I’m only a couple of hours from you near Wilmington! Thanks so much, I’ve been trying to figure this out for a while. 💜
If there is a way to garden in the ground without bending over let me know. I don’t care to try it but I’m curious.
I planted my pansies a few weeks ago in the same zone and seeing the result from that.... Won't happen again
is that a silver maple in your neighbor's yard?
No, it's a red maple. Both are bad urban trees
@@JimPutnam I didn't know that red maple roots spread that far. I had some silver maples at my old house and the surface roots were horrible!
i just did some pansies last night and a raccoon tore them up overnight. dang!
The squirrels are bad for that as well
Beach mice ate my pansies into the ground. They were so beautiful and lush, could not wait to see them the next morning, I was shocked, took me a few days to recover. Also had my horses eat thirty pampus grass plants to the ground overnight, that was shocking too.
