This is the first winter I'm concerned about winterizing my pots. After watching this very informative video, I will make room in the house for my pots. Thanks for sharing. Looking forward to seeing how you prepare used soil for the next growing season.
Please consider doing a Deep Dive into using Terracotta Planters? I think its very important for the average person especially for Succulents to use Terracotta? Better too dry than too wet 😉
I do container vegetable gardening on my balcony and indoors. I mostly use plastic pots but I do have a few clay ones. Haven't been doing it long enough to see anything breaking or deteriorating yet, but this is good information to remember for the future.
Loved this. Never put much thought into it before, but I do want to start more container gardening in the coming years. Loved the kiddie pool idea! PS those glasses look nice on you. 🙂
I will be using mostly fabric pots for most of my plants. Im in Montréal Canada. The majority of the pots are on the roof. We moved in last year; pre-covid, had our first winter and the roof obviously gets a lot of snow. I am thinking of storing the pots in a group so the they get covered in it. Right now they are lined up.
I have a real mish-mash of pots. A couple of hanging baskets, wood barrels, plastic ones, cast metal , terra cotta. I used to like the cast metal types that I have. When on the front patio, it feels like a cemetary. So as soon as the petunias are done i get them out of sight as quckly as I can. The wood type get emptied of their impatiens then dried in the sun and put either in the garage or out on the back deck away from snow. The hanging baskets are pyramidal, so they get emptied, nested together then into the garage. The plastic types do not last more than one or two seasons no matter how they are treated. I have tried everything but no luck. Although, what I have done with some success is reusing those giant poinsettia pots. I think my bro. buys them at Costco each year? Well the inserts are lightweight and the covers are vibrant colours. To pop drainage holes in them is a snap. They are much easier to load up with plants and so much lighter than any other container. I have different plants that bloom at different times. It is great to swap out a plant and just put whatever sleeve I feel like using. Then the lily spends the rest of the summer on the sunny side of the house until they are done. The mini roses have taken it's place out front. Shoot, I submitted an essay to you and there is so much more to share with you. I am anxious for what you have to share with us next time. Skip
I have to admit that I never thought that much about it before! I have various types of pots: ceramic & terra cotta- get moved into the garage, larger ones made of faux concrete or heavy duty thick plastic- stay out all winter with no issues so far. This year I am experimenting with planting some tulip bulbs in plastic pots and keeping them in the garage until spring, so we’ll see how that goes! Will you be planting any bulbs this fall? Zone 3
Hi Ashley! My pots are all plastic. I'm beginning to take down my garden for the season now. I don't have an indoor or covered space to store them, so they'll be on their own on my uncovered patio. I was wondering if I should dump the soil or cover it. If covering, do I use an opaque tarp or just landscape fabric (to prevent bugs and weeds from find a new home), but I don't want to cause mold and mildew to grow, either. Also, I saw you dumping into a kiddy pool. I actually have one of those. I was thinking of using it next time I make a container veggie garden - using it to dump a few containers at a time, amend and loosen the soil, then refill the containers. Is this a bad plan, and why? Thanks for doing this very timely video! Hugs and kissies to ALL the animals!
Do the pool idea! It’s amazing and exactly what I use! You can leave the soil in the plastic just make sure it’s semi dry though so the freezing doesn’t cause any sort of busting. For covering anything will work, I would worry about mold or mildew to much sometimes that’s a good thing for the soil! In my experience black plastic (aka garbage bags) work really well at killing off weed seeds

Yea especially with the fabric pots they might go a bit wonky with the snow pack.
Great tips, last year was my first ever winter in Canada and I lost some beautiful pots, this year I will be more careful!
That’s the worst 😭

Nope! You are
Great tips. I've been doing it all wrong 😬
I’m sure that’s not true if they aren’t busting your doing something right!
I’m trying to burry my pots in the ground this year. People said it to prevent pots from cracking. To keep your plant warm throughout the winter.
thats a great way too over winter pots
Thank you!!!! I just broke a large plastic pot in 20 f weather.
Ugh that’s the worst sorry to hear that
I mainly have plants in pots. I have some in the ground, but I also have chickens so things in the ground are at their mercy. 😂
