Løvstien parkrun, Bergen, Norway. Oslo to Bergen - The Most Scenic Train Journey in the World?!

  • We visited Norway to explore parkrunworld and to take advantage of Norway's extra day parkrun - Labour Day. Rather than run two parkruns in Oslo we took the opportunity to see some of Norway's spectacular scenery. We took the 7.5 hour train journey from Oslo to Bergen as it is said to be one of the most scenic train journeys in the world!
The train journey did not disappoint! We particularly enjoyed seeing where the snowy scenes in Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back were filmed and the incredible scenery took our breath away. There's not many 7.5 hour train journeys that you can't wait to do again!
Løvstien parkrun, Bergen, is extremely hilly! A double out-and-back with what I think is one of the best parkrun start/finish locations in parkrunworld. The views looking out over Bergen are just spectacular! Run Director Alan made us all feel so very welcome, and we set a new attendance record for the event which was lovely. You could tell that the locals are very proud of their stunning parkrun and really enjoyed having visitors to show it off to which added to the atmosphere.
I can't thank Alan and his team enough for a wonderful morning. We enjoyed visiting Norway so much and without parkrun we might not have had the opportunity to meet these fantastic communities. parkrun really is the best way to travel!
    Happy running,
    Nicola :)

I love the relationship you have with poppy, it’s adorable. I have 2 similar aged girls and I’m in a similar single parent situation and seeing your videos really gives me reassurance that taking them to park run is the right thing for the 3 of us - poppy is growing up with a true role model x

Thank you ❤️ ooh... The dynamic is always harder when you're outnumbered so massive kudos to you! 💪 I think it's so important to do things that keep us, the parents, sane and happy and parkrun is that for me. I don't care if we run, walk, get distracted by the views. I'm experiencing the world with Poppy and in a few years she'll be a teenager and might not want that so for now I'm appreciating every second! 😃🤗❤️

Another great video, Nicola, I must go back to Bergen & do Løvstien parkrun. If you want to tie in another parkrun with a breathtaking train journey I would suggest taking the train over the St Gotthard Pass to Milan. The train does loop the loop in at few places. Be careful not to book a train through the recently built St Gotthard Base Tunnel or you won’t see anything as it goes right under the mountains.

Mura di Lucca is the one I want to do in Italy as it is a beautiful medieval town & running on top of the town walls would be really cool.
Another option if you wanted to travel on the St Gotthard Railway would be to fly into Milan, take the railway over the Alps to Lucerne & then head onto Hockgraben parkrun at Constance (just across the border in Germany) and fly back from Munich. If you go to Lucerne visit the huge Swiss Transport Railway Museum. When I was there they had a fantastic train driving simulator for you to try.
A third option would be to fly to Basle & do Dreilandergarten parkrun just across the border in Germany. From Basle you can easily get trains down to the breathtaking area around Interlaken where the Eiger, Monch & Jungfrau Mountains are situated. Once there you can go on the breathtaking train ride all the way upto the top of the Jungfraujoch through the mountain. I didn’t do that but I took a cable car upto the Schilthorn Restaurant on the opposite side of the valley which was where the Bond film “On Her Majesty’s Secret Service” was partly filmed. I also went up the Pilatus Cogwheel Railway at Lucerne & the Gornergrat Railway at Zermatt. Several of these breathtaking rides are half price if you buy a Swiss Rail Pass for a week which is what I did.

If you want to stop on the rail journey, then apart from Finse (where you could stay in the hotel or the DNT cabin), then try Hallingskeid. The railway station itself is impressive (and the no cooking signs are amusing). You can stay at the DNT cabin (self catering) which is only a short walk from the station. If doing it in the summer, then rent bikes (Finse or Myrdal) and cycle down to the fjord at Flåm

Hi Nicola, thank you for posting your fantastic video of Lovstein Parkrun. That is now on my to do list. I plan to go on a Norwegian Coastal Cruise from Bergen, after doing their parkrun, and would appreciate a bit more info please. When you say hilly, how does it compare with the hilliest parkruns in England ? Say Queen Elizabeth Country Park, Durlston Country Park, Lanhydrock ? I assume the only way to get to Bergen from England is to fly to Oslo, then get the train ? I’m happy for you to DM me, as I’m more likely to see your reply. Thank you.

    • @NicolaRuns

If you Google 'parkrun extra days' then there's a page detailing which day each parkrun territory holds it's additional parkrun. There's boxing day in Poland, ascension day in the Nordics (they changed it last year), the Netherlands is this Monday, obviously several countries choose Xmas day, there's Thanksgiving in the US etc etc 😃
