Currently doing a Tonbridge Angels save on FM22 (I struggle to let go & move on) which is very similar to your tactic. Currently top of the Conference South. Regularly achieving >70% possession. We're like a boa constrictor, squeezing the footballing life out of opponents. Only difference is that I tend to start with a DLPs in the DM slot, and compensate by having one FB on support and cut inside with ball in order to solidify. This more dynamic DM role helps centralise attacks, meaning high possession, good penetrative play and not too much vulnerability to the counter attack.
Wow, wow, wow Jonno! What a video. Biggest tip you gave was right at the start - take elements of this and put it into your own tactic. I’m not trying to build a possession based tactic but my team needed more possession than it was getting. A few carefully selected instructions based on solid theory and it’s made an immediate impact.

I just had another go with this. 69% possession, 4.71 XG and 4 goals from 31 shots, 15 of which in target against Lazio. I play as Southampton and to top it all I just beat Arsenal 1-0. This is definitely worth a second watch and expand 👍

Great video help a lot with possession and it's improved my defence to 85 percent rate against big team we holding well specially with a small team with youngster I managed with losc french squad to finish 4th and average age is 18 to 31 I play 4 3 3 but use my striker as a number 9 on narrow play n small pass thanks to you
Great video I believe Balanced mentality is the best for keeping the ball. Balanced mentality and positive player roles I don't trigger press either. I leave it on standard, partly because i use a narrow formation, so i just trust the defensive block to restrict and hunt down anybody that gets into it. As opposed to leaving positions to try to press the ball holder.
Great expaination of team instructions. Would've liked to hear about the player roles and individual instructions. As there is a bunch of instructions that possibly could've brought that possession number even higher.

As a lover of player traits, you’re not wrong. But if I add that, then I need to set up a data hub, and then some mentoring groups. We’d have a 4 hour video 😂 I’ll get a separate vid done for traits, first tip for you - get a mezzala with ‘gets forward whenever possible’ and ‘moves into channels’
Possesion is all about making the channels, so you have to play very wide setup, so while your defenders pass the ball, they find a free player, they pass to him, the defenders go higher, and get ready to receive the ball. If you play narrow, then you have to play fast, its tiki-taka, when xavi, busquets and iniesta played close to each other and passed the ball damn quick
Not necessarily. Playing too wide can isolate players. You’ll find some teams defend channels nowadays, cutting off those passes. Ideally you have a mix of players coming deep and players stretching the pitch to create space
@@TheManagersSeat yeah but for example if you watch a man city match against a lower table team, you will see that in attack they play in a 3-2-5, mostly laporte, dias and walker being far from each other to rotate the ball and find the midfielders and the widest attackers in attack (this year they are mostly foden on the left, giving space to de bruyne next to haaland, and de bruyne gives space to cancelo to get in, and as i remember mostly bernardo hugs the right side, leaving the space next to haaland to alvarez). They are all about making a lot of space beetween the defenders of the opponent, then de bruyne makes a killer pass to haaland, who uses his deadly speed to get in front of the goal and scores

Great video!! I was surprised to hear that you recommend possession based tactics when you're the underdogs though, I would've thought going more direct is better as it lowers the risk of being pressed by the better team? Could you maybe explain/expand on that thought?
In the simplest terms, if you have the ball then they can’t score. MK Dons we’re a great example when Russell Martin took over. They were a poor team struggling, he adopted a high possession tactic and they went on a great run. Winning with fine margins is HUGE, moving the ball tires the opposition out and allows you to grind them down with a late winner.
Ahh okay that makes sense. What I’m wondering though is what about teams that have an extreme gap in abilities? Say the Dons against a good pressing team like Liverpool? Or for a recent example, Australia vs Argentina in the World Cup? Australia didn’t keep up a whole lot of possession but threatened chances by absorbing pressure and playing relatively direct? And when they tried to keep possession and play from the back, mistakes were made. Is this kind of thing reflected in game as well?
Great video! But I’m always in doubt wether to change tactics when I meet a highly superior team as they probably won’t allow us to play possession based. But it seems counter intuitive to suddenly go for a low block or something when your team aren’t used to playing like that? Should you just make a more defensively shaped variation of the possession tactic or something else? Looking for feedback from pretty much anyone. Thanks.
it's so good but how about player positions? is it too important playing inverted winger or winger and deep lying playmaker or mezzela? i think inverted wing back is a good choice when you want to play possession based football.
I purposefully left out the roles I’ve chosen so people can use the theory for their own tactics. But, when you download the tactic you’ll see the best roles for possession based football. In my opinion of course
Love the video, I'm finally dominating possession and pass completion, but I'm finding this tactic dreadful for penetrating defenses, I finish almost every match with fewer shots than my opponent and as a result, I'm still losing more games than winning, even with 70% possession
You’ll find that. This will teach you the principles of possession. From here you need to tweak and start playing with team and player instructions to get the best out of the formation
@Skeats20 A common trap people fall into is thinking that possession football = Attacking football with lots of goals. This tactic is all about dominating the ball and playing a passing game to keep control of the match. If you're up against weaker sides then you'll find the chances to win however coming up against an evenly matched or better side than you then you'll struggle with the penetration. You'll note that a lot of the Players have PI's set for "Shoot less often" I'd suggest you remove these on your wide players and maybe even go for "shoot MORE often". You can also try switching the mentality of some of your roles to attacking. They'll still be involed in the possession game but they'll make more pentrating runs.I've also found it helps to switch to a quicker tempo during the match to catch opponents off guard especially if you have the data to suggest that your opponent conceeds a lot near the end of each half.
Such a shame this doesn’t seem to work so well on FM23 touch despite the maker banging on about how it’s the same match engine. Sure, I got loads of possession but as with everything else you try on FM23 touch, nothing else! It doesn’t matter how good your players are, how well you set up the team, you will be wasting your time trying this. To be honest I think I need to move over to the full game as I’m paying for Apple Arcade which would be £60 a year compared to a one off payment for the full game which people have had success with and much more detail. Get your act together SI, FM touch is a shabby half baked game for your Apple crowd to waste time on the train. Serious game it isn’t! Great video by the way, thank you for the time you put into these. I would welcome your thoughts on FM touch too.
Yeah it definitely plays different. In FM proper, draft mode uses the same engine as touch as that feels different. Tactically even more so. Get over to the PC world, you won’t regret it 👀
@@TheManagersSeat ok, so I just tweaked my team roles to what they are allegedly best at and I spanked Lazio 4-0 after a disappointing 1-0 loss away in the Euro conference league. I had to remove work ball into the box and remove time wasting as the players were stopping for a beer on the pitch mid game but I’m getting better results at last. To bring this into perspective how powerful this is…….I’m playing as SOUTHAMPTON!! 😂 Thanks again for making this video.
I’ll post my formation later and data hub info but for possession the best out come is 3 at back with wingbacks, it out preforms 4 at back (possession wise) every time in this years FM

I love possession gamestyle. Doesn't matter what team i tranning in FM, what level i am or what level players i have, i allways chase the possession fotball. In lowers levels i choose more genneric roles, in high levels i go in a more complex way. And i try this football with difrent tatics, depending how many players i have for each position. I follow some principles that you mentioned in offensive way, but in out off possession i feel me allways in some doubts, i confess. I think the creation of pressing zones and trapps doesn't work in correctly way. The individual instructions for oppents doesn't look good for me. Do you feel the same or it's just me who doesn't know how to use it correctly? Sorry for my bad english
I'm trying your tactics on ps5 fm23. Wish me luck I'm doing MLS. I was with my home state team Charlotte FC and got fired in my year 4 lol. Fan's were celebrating my downfall.
Any more insight on player instructions universally for example telling all to pass it shorter I'm on console version so can't download the tactic 😭 getting high 60s can't break into 70s though I fear its certain player instructions and roles I'm adopting.. any help cheers .. Great upload 👌
Yeah this isn’t a goal scoring tactic. It will give you the foundation for high possession. From there you can add some of the principles to your own tactic, or start tweaking this one

You’re spot on, this years ME requires a set tactic and then variations of that tactic to switch to in game
Classic 4-4-2 with crosses from the wings and deadly finishers up front

What is the answer in the 70th minute when you are 1-0 down but dominate the ball? Can you change things to be a little more urgent or direct?
Oh man, depends on so many factors. Raising tempo, longer passes and pass into space would be a quick addition

The principles still work, the midfield is a lot more chaotic since the update so longer balls forward and pass completion seems down
