      Even worse when you know that Barry Fitzgerald was nominated for Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor FOR THE SAME ROLE!!! so there was a spot for Edward G. Robinson.

    Edward G Robinson was a great actor,and he should have received an Oscar nomination for his role in Our Vines Have Tender Grapes. But in the fifties he named names and prehaps the reason for the lukewarm applause. Though I believe had he been alive to receive it and made the same entrance as his wife to accept it,he would have got a standing ovation.

    Shamefully, the academy ignored the great character actor for 50 years. Not so much as a nomination . Film fans would, i'm sure, loved to have seen him get the award for his portrayal of Barton Keyes in Double Indemnity.

    • @dangelo1369
      @dangelo1369 4 роки тому

      Not exactly "ignored". He gained some notoriety for being a HUAC "friendly witness" that resulted in many of fellow actors/actresses to be blacklisted.

    He was such a fine actor. He put his
    mark on so many great films and the
    lesser of those were enhanced greatly by his presence in them. In the 1970s I had occasion to walk by
    a flower shop frequently called Kristanos & Koster located in the East 60s off Madison Ave. as I remember it. A beautiful old style
    florist and in the window was a letter
    of thanks from Edward G. Robinson who had been sent flowers by the owners when they found out he was dining nearby. I thought this a nice tribute to him and a beautiful story.
    I used to walk that way to look at that letter very often. I enjoyed his work then and as I got older I appreciated it all the more. The Oscars really don't mean much. In some cases they get it right but mostly it's the movie going public
    who either by viewing habits or acts
    of appreciation for film stars let it be known who the best in the business are.

    I have to agree with the writer who said that he should have had a nomination and possible Award for his role in "Our Vines Have Tender Grapes". He was terrific playing a man who was a loving father, husband, and community leader. Its incredible that he was never nominated for anything. But I'm sure that politics played a role in that. I agree that the lukewarm and polite applause that his wife received on his behalf was disappointing. He deserved better if for no other reason than the volume of work he did at a high level. He was also known to be a more than decent person.

    • @bbdupon

      To the contrary, i think Hackman's expression was simply reflecting his personal thoughts at that moment, thoughts which might well have included the span of another amazing film actor's career.

    Edward g Robinson is a legend. 99% of these so called actors would have not cut it during peak era of Hollywood. Gene Hackman is OK. Few good films. But he can’t even touch Robison. Robinson’s time even a B grade actor would be a legend by today’s standards .

    Edward G. Robinson is near the top of the list that comprises the top ten greatest actors of all time: Robinson, Cagney, Bogart, Gary Cooper, Jimmy Stewart and Spencer Tracy. (The other four being Chaplin, Brando, De Niro and Fonda) His skill, versatility, strength, sincerity and total honesty, commitment and dedication as an actor has rarely been surpassed well into the 21st century. From Little Caesar to All My Sons, from Brother Orchid to Double Indemnity, from Dr. Ehrlich's Magic Bullet to The Sea Wolf to Key Largo to House Of Strangers to The Cincinnati Kid, Eddie Robinson did it all. Edward G. Robinson was, is and always will be, the best. Talent is not measured by academy awards or life achievement awards. It's measured by a performer's endurance with the public. In over 100 characterizations spanning over 50 years, Edward G. Robinson's work has stood the test of time. 50 years after his death, Edward G. Robinson's masterly characterizations live on. Thank you, Eddie.

    • @jazzdub4958
      @jazzdub4958 Рік тому +1

      A top ten list is virtually impossible to compile as much as we all do it from time to time. One's list is always open for scrutiny and criticism. To pull yours apart, the biggest omissions are no females or minorities on the list. Are you trying to say that Bette Davis, Katharine Hepburn, Sophia Loren, Audrey Hepburn, Ingrid Bergman, Jodie Foster, Cicely Tyson, Meryl Streep doesn't get considered on a top ten list? Non white actors like Sidney Poitier, Denzel Washington, Anthony Quinn etc would also grab a top ten spot. Of the white male actors you only name, there are so many that you conveniently miss off like Laurence Olivier, Walter Brennen, Kirk Douglas, Burt Lancaster, Paul Muni, William Holden, Alec Guinness, Gregory Peck, Al Pacino, Gene Hackman, Clint Eastwood, John Wayne, Jack Lemmon, Peter Finch, Jack Nicholson, Buster Keaton and perhaps your biggest omission - Cary Grant who is 2nd only to Humphrey Bogart as a greatest of all screen actors.
