  • Builders of Bhutan Episode 2 - Michael Rutland in conversation with Lyonpo Sonam Tobgye.
    Lyonpo Sonam Tobgye was Chief Justice of the High Court of Bhutan, a position he had held since 1991. He was appointed Chief Justice of the Supreme Court in December 2009. Lyonpo was Chairman of the Constitution Writing Committee and he oversaw the drafting of Bhutan’s first Constitution and a number of judicial reforms. From 1986 to 1991, he simultaneously held the positions of auditor general of the Royal Audit Authority and secretary of the Royal Civil Service Commission. During that time he implemented a number of civil service reforms and drafted the rules and regulations for both the civil service and the Royal Audit Authority.
    Through these podcasts, our goal is to educate and inspire by sharing the stories of those who helped shape the Kingdom of Bhutan.

    He saved our country on many occasions against the backdrop of changes in international politics. During his term he navigated Bhutan's legal system in great way to counter international relations which would eventually benefited our Kings, Country and People.

      Choten - What an interesting comment! It would indeed be marvellous to be able to talk to the Shabdrung - but a bit difficult, I think. Nevertheless the Shabdrung's footsteps in the sands of time are very apparent when we look at his lasting achievements and legacy.
