    I love my Whirly Pop! It actually makes a batch of popcorn faster than any other kind of popper. You can use less oil than the instructions say, and it'll still work well. You can also put butter and salt into it as soon as the popping stops, and turn the crank to distribute them through the warm popcorn. (You should wash it after that, though.)
    I've had my Whirley Pop for a long time, and a couple of years ago the plastic gears on the lid broke. I wrote to the company, and they sent me a whole new lid for free!

    When I was young we would go buy vegetables every Friday night from a man up the road. He would tell us that on Friday night he would have popcorn and tomato juice for dinner. Every once in awhile when I'm feeling a little low I will have popcorn and tomato juice for dinner on a Friday night. It always makes me feel better.

      Why specifically tomato juice? Sounds like a good combo, but I think I'd go with cream o' tomato soup, instead, made with milk, not water. A little grated cheddar mixed into the soup while it's hot. Hmmm, I think that might be dinner tonight.

    I bought the Whirly Popper a couple of years ago and after a lifetime of using different poppers this is hands down the best I've ever seen. It is quick and easy and leaves almost no unpopped kernels. I bought the stainless model and it is easy to clean up too. Using two tablespoons of popping oil and adding a bit of movie popcorn salt directly to the popper produces great popcorn. Last year at Christmas I gave one to each of our families and they all love them too.

    Great review! I read an article somewhere (perhaps Consumer Reports?) about popcorn. It said that the unpopped kernels really had to do with the freshness of the popcorn more than anything else. One might think popcorn could last forever, since it is dried, but it does not. It still contains moisture inside the kernels, which is what makes it pop. It dries out, and then it won't pop. Older packages of popcorn, whether they've been sitting on the grocery store shelves or our own shelves, do not pop as well. Fresher ones do. Thanks for the great video!

    As an avid popcorn eater, I LOVE the whirley pop!! It''s super fast, every kernel ends up popped, and you save the steps having to slide the pot all around or pick it up and swirl it. Best thing to do is throw salt in at the beginning so it actually sticks and comes out all evenly salted...no butter necessary.

    • @cowboybob7093
      @cowboybob7093 6 років тому

      Try making a pot dry, no oil. You need to keep it moving or some kernels will toast on one side and not pop, but it works pretty much as well as with oil. The gadget would probably be perfect for dry.
      Microwave? I don't have many good things to say about it, it's fun to watch, the smell is inviting.

    • @lovecinnamonxx

      Brian Landers what in the world is low-fat oil? 😂

    • @jbeargrr
      @jbeargrr 6 років тому +4

      Yeah, no such thing as low-fat oil.
      I grew up popping corn in a cast iron skillet, with a dome-type lid to give it room to bounce around. We always put the oil in first, with a single kernal. As soon as it popped, we dump in the rest of the corn, and put the lid on. It starts popping very quickly, and we shook the pan the whole time it popped. When popping slowed way down, we stopped and dumped it into a big bowl immediately. Can't let it sit in cast iron, it holds the heat, the corn will burn.
      I don't use microwave popcorn, they put all kinds of bad crap in it. I do have an air popper that works great, got it for $1 at a thrift store.

    • @cowboybob7093
      @cowboybob7093 6 років тому

      jbeargrr, Yeah, the oil/corn together, I didn't get.
      Sure, I mentioned "dry," but oil or dry, it seems adding popcorn to a hot skillet (etc) works best, dry, oil, no matter.

    • @astrid6496
      @astrid6496 6 років тому

      I have made it the way you describe too, but the caramel is a lot thicker and sweeter. It's a completely different taste. When I make it in the kettle, you just get a thin coating and it is just slightly sweetened... You can eat a lot more without getting sick haha. And yes, it can very easily burn. I would be lying if I said I haven't messed up and let it go too long, you really have to stay on top of it the whole time. For me personally it's worth it though, the flavour is incredibly addictive!

    I have one of these and I enjoy it. They also say not to clean it every time just wipe it out with a paper towel because it'll season the pot over time similar to cast iron. For anyone with an electric stove pre heat the element before you put the pot down, it helps make it go fast. I still wish I could find a decent air popper, the one I had before died and it was great.

      I tried olive oils flavored / infused with different flavors: Chili was the best, enough heat that anyone can tell, but not hot enough to keep them from coming back handful after handful. Bacon grease, a guilty pleasure I need to try.

      It's also good popped in clarified butter, which has a higher smoke point than most cooking fats. Popcorn cooked IN butter. 2 birds 1 stone.

    Things I have done since I got my Whirly-Pop:
    Made clarified butter kettle corn.
    Used beef tallow as oil (sparingly!) and seasoned with a beef ramen noodle packet.
    Mixed clarified butter and coconut oil, colored with annatto and seasoned with fine salt.
    Bacon grease and seasoned with alder smoked salt.
    Used oil with a touch of chili oil (don't breathe the steam!) and sesame oil, seasoned with Chinese five spice powder.
    Olive oil, seasoned with parmesan cheese and rosemary.
    Pop in oil but season with brown butter and Himalayan pink salt.
    All of these could be done with a pot, sure, but I love the speed and ease of the Whirly-Pop. You never have to wash it unless you make kettle corn in it. You just rinse it with hot water and wipe it out. Anyway, I am a big fan of mine. Your mileage may vary.

      These sound like some real popcorn innovations! I have never dreamed of BEEF POPCORN! I happen to have a jar of home-rendered tallow, too. Annato oil or annato lard ("achiotina" in the store) sounds GREAT. Well, a little something to look forward to.

    • @jbeargrr
      @jbeargrr 6 років тому +2

      Bryce Solar, coconut oil has no flavor, it's the salt and artificial butter flavor that makes movie popcorn taste the way it does.
      Coconut oil is better for you, but it won't taste like movie corn.
      I'd rather put real melted butter on mine, anyway.

    • @ortzinator

      The oil is the flavoring. I've had great results with just canola oil and salt.

    • @MaximRecoil
      @MaximRecoil 5 років тому

      @@ortzinator You have low standards for what constitutes "great results." Canola oil is practically flavorless, so the only thing you'll taste is salt. In addition to salt, popcorn should also have a butter flavor, which only comes from butter or the chemicals in butter that are responsible for the buttery flavor (diacetyl and acetoin).

      We love our whirly pop! it has ruined us for bag popcorn. that stufd no longer has a place in our house :) We do have a larger kitchen, so we don't worry about storing it. for me it isn't about the taste or texture, as it's the same with a pot, for me it's the time! We usually have a lot of people over for movie nights, so it's faster to make multiple bowls and still have them be hot for everyone!

    I remember as a kid mom would buy pre-packaged popcorn pouches. They came with two attached plastic sections. One had the popcorn and salt and the other side had a yellowish gel that looked like butter. Just put them in a pot and go. They were pretty good; the oily stuff gave it a nice buttery flavor.

    I am one of the cooks that love gadgets but feel anything should have more uses than one to be worth the space and investment it requires. I always try to figure out multiple uses for each gadget. This popper looks so fast and easy that I thought it could be worth the space it takes. Perhaps it could be used also to make croutons, just figure out a right temperature and give the spiced bread cubes whirl every couple of minutes. It would be easier than making them on a baking sheet and opening a hot oven door to toss the cubes around. I am sure there would be other ways to use it also.
    Emmy, you are the best gadget tester on the net with your fluent language skills and calm voice. It is a pleasure to listened to you, I feel it is almost like ASMR.
