Amazingly nostalgic film. I felt real sadness seeing some of the old buildings being demolished, especially the Empire Cinema which was flourishing and busy up until the end of the '70s. Still, I have faith that a Morecambe revival is just around the corner. Bring on the Eden Project!

Yes, it is a pretty miserable film really, never intended it to be but it is what it is I guess, just capturing the last of these tourist attractions. It's been a long time coming but I share your hope that things are about to improve greatly for Morecambe.

great video. Sadly the rearranged railway station and roads, building of Aldis etc. seems to have divided the West End of the town. In previous years there were slot machine / arcade venues on a much longer length of the promenade. Although times have changed anyway but it is very different to what it used to be. The loss of the piers added the the decline, but again they would have cost money to maintain and probably wouldn't have been as popular in recent years perhaps.

That's an excellent record of huge changes in Morecambe. I remember the west end pier being demolished after storm damage in the 1970s but I didn't know how or when the central pier and Marineland disappeared. Was there a fire on the central pier? The superstructure looks ruined even before the scrapmen moved in.

Yes, there was a fire for what seemed like a long time before eventually being demolished. Not sure what year the fire was but it was empty and unused for a long while after.

@@slinguk I'm a retired fireman now and I was on the first crew to attend the pier fire. I was a young fireman on Blue Watch at the old Clark Street station. I'm pretty sure (though not 100% certain) that it was the end of March 1991. It was one of the largest fires I've ever seen in a 25-year career and we earned our money that night. We did our best to stop it mounting the pavement. It was sad to see as I'd been to many College nights out there in the past.

Really interesting, thanks for posting. But it's a very sad film - to see Marineland and the pier being demolished. Somehow Morecambe hasn't survived as a resort the way Blackpool and Southport have in their different ways. Could it be something as simple as its just that little bit further from the Manchester - Liverpool conurbations, or is that too simplistic?

I did think it was a bit depressing after posting it, I never intended it that way and it was filmed a long while ago. I think I just wanted to capture the end of an era at the time. I think Morecambe has a lot to offer but couldn't really compete with Blackpool, should have taken a different direction such as building a marina.

@@slinguk The view of the Lakeland mountains from the prom is superb, it's just a bit of a puzzle what to put on the prom to attract visitors. I was last in Morecambe in 2017 while staying in Lancaster, perhaps I'll go again this summer see any more changes.

@@slinguk we used to visit morecambe from mid 80s a few times a year as my uncle lived there . I loved it . But I did see it decline even as a child . My uncle always used to say it’s just one big car park for Blackpool and the lakes . 😂
