To those that wonder why Great Mazinger is doing so poorly..... it was explained that this is NOT the actual Great Mazinger and is in fact a cheap replica made by Photon Labs (the continuity of this OVA is weird). The REAL Great Mazinger was actually hidden in that same lab where Kouji found Mazinkaiser which you can see the difference in the coloring of the arms (The weak one with black arms while the real model had blue arms)
I often forget how different it is. It kind of reminds me of ultraman gaia the main hero gets beaten receives a power up the second hero takes a back seat and then they return for the final battle.
@@udoesstuff (this is me talking as a Real-robot fan) Given that when Great Mazinger made contact with Kaiser in it's attempt to stop it, suddenly you see Kaisers cockpit/brain module attempting to work with the power lines glowing, but with Kouji unresponsive it was essentially malfunctioning. Kaiser's systems then realized something wasn't operating correctly and attempted a hard reboot, resulting in venting from both the knees and mask, and caused sparking which thankfully snapped Kouji out of unconsciousness.

The mode was a result of a malfunction caused from the tremendous amount of pression put into koji's brain for the piloting, resulting in koji pass out momentarily. Mazinkaiser communicates actively with the pilot as the aim for the attack that is controlled via brain-machine link, as koji will explain in future.
Okay I think in the lore or manga, Koji falls unconscious from trying to control mazinkaiser, with mazinkaiser overwhelming power knocking out Koji or in the manga it took over his mind. Without Koji in full control of kaiser, kaiser goes into a devil mode where it will destroy everything in sight.
