I agree completely. I increasingly realize how important it is to document certain Power Query steps or DAC code so that you can understand them well later. Over time it happens to me that I no longer recognize my own work.

I usually put my notes foe each step in a query in the Properties of the step, you right click a step and select properties. There is a nice box for notes.

I like this a lot, it creates a nice little info icon on top of each step.

It is certainly reassuring to see your top 5 reflect my journey! I recognise that I too regularly make very similar mistakes, but it's a journey and I'm trying to be better all of the time. Thank you Chandeep, for your wisdom and for all of your content!

3:46 This one is huge. Even now, I have to force myself to plan for the outcome instead of just playing around in the data, hoping that the solution will somehow emerge from the chaos. The point about documenting your work is a very close second.

👏 I totally agree with your points. Planning, planning and planning, important things say three times! By the way, what do you mean by "content creator"? Where can I find them? Thanks,🙂

    hi Chandeep of Goodly!
You mentioned really good themes to avoid, however.
I really recommend for theme #4 to also include Chat-GTP 3.5 for solving DAX measures. (after follow a good course on Prompt Engineering Chat-GPT) What is your opinion?

The whole "taking notes" part is very true. 😂 I can understand the concepts very much so when I'm doing the hands-on part. But after like a few days, some of the measures I'd made would look foreign to me. 😂 I'm like "WTF is this sh*t??!". And I write my notes as detailed as possible, like elementary level kind of comprehension. 😂 So yes, the taking notes part is a game changer.

You said Power Query is very important to you. I (try to) prepare all data in my datawarehouse using SQL/stored procedures in such a way that in Power BI I mostly only have to think about the visual side of things. I try to prevent DAX and Power Query as much as possible. This method works great for me. Can you give me arguments why I should use Power Query more? Do you think I am missing out on certain things?

Regarding notes, oh how guilty am I , even before pq and pbi the number of times I wish I'd written something to explain what I'd done.

Not always possible, but all big companies have lines of demarcation between the developer and the tester. In short, YOU CANNOT EFFECTIVELY MARK YOUR OWN HOMEWORK!
Of course, the laziest devs never test anything. I'm not suggesting that. Just do yourself a favour and find a second pair of eyes. You and your clients won't regret it.
