- HOW TO WORK A LOCK ON YOUR OWN - 2020
Luckily I had a bit of help with this one.
Moving a boat, whether it be a Narrowboat or widebeam, on your own can be a daunting task and operating a lock solo can be nerve wracking but here are a few tips...

It’s Adventure Time. Travel by Narrowboat and watch me as I move my Canal Boat around the UK and Film my Travel Vlog Flow with Mylo in a Documentary style, my own Brand of Vlog Creations Filming with iPhone and Posting Regular Documentaries.

New Here?
Hi i’m Mylo, I live on a Narrow boat with my wife and dog (Sal). I am currently out of work due to these Covid times so if there is any way you can help me by sharing my videos it would mean the world to me.
🙏🏻
...and a great big personal thank you to you for watching and for all your continued support.
It really is just me talking to a camera like a crazy person without all of you!

I’ll be a solo constant cruiser once lockdown ends, so this video has been useful.
Okay I got a Flying a plane advert. Nice, unique one there.
Love the vlogs !
Live long and prosper.
The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few... or the one. 🖖🏻
Great video. Nice to see a cameo from Rowlf at the end of the video.
another nice relaxing canal video thanks
Watched a narrowboat video recently where the couple talked about dodgy areas to tie up. They obviously receive advice from UA-camrs, but they felt that every 'don't tie up here' warning was not warranted. I would love to hear your thoughts on the matter. You touched on this in this video. How do you judge an area re safety? Do you have a sixth sense about such things? Have you had any incidents -- I notice that you stay in London from time to time. I'm just curious -- I won't be able to put your knowledge to any use (not in this life anyway). Thanks for brightening up our days. Terry and Dianne
An excellent question.
Being able to size up people, situations and knowing a little more about your surroundings helps a lot. When it comes to security, just being on your boat more also helps. 👍🏻
There is a similar phenomenon in sailing. Now that navionics allows community edits, people list dangerous rocks in the middle of prime anchorages, then miraculously manage to anchor there with out damage. A quick dive shows that often the dangerous rocks have wandered off.
Lol good vid Myles. Hope u guys are well. Not missing the marina at all lol
Cheers, mate. Our roof still looks great thanks to your help. 👍🏻
Hey Myles, I’ve been off the canals and onto dry land for about three years now. I came off for various practical reasons but would like to retire on a narrow boat later in life. I cruised mainly between QE Park on the Regents to lower Bucks on the GU. Gotta day, I felt disconnected, isolated, lonely at times. The boaters are friendly of course, and I made some good acquaintances, but in general I never felt connected. Any comment or advice on this? Also, the GU and Regents were getting heavily congested - is that becoming worse? Cheers!
Living on a boat on your own can be both freeing and isolating in equal measure. You’re right about London and the boating community having grown massively in recent years. This can tend to create problems for any community but the underlying solution is education, patience and understanding. Any people not interested in these things don’t seem to last. I exclude your good self from this example of course. 👍🏻🙏🏻
Myles McDowell great insight mate, present company included 👍 :)
Interesting subject. I sail on oceans and find a similar sharp contrast. In port sailors are very friendly and make it difficult to leave. But out there, you are very alone. A boat can be 10 feet away and in some conditions they might as well be on the moon because they can't help you without serious risk to themselves. Another thing is that you can be in truly horrible conditions and the usual sea birds are completely un-phased by it all skimming over waves when you are struggling to crawl on deck. You can feel very alone on a boat.
Notice the beams of the lock gates are to high to put your bum against them to open.
Like your Steve McQueen impression in the intro.
Are you supposed to close all of the lock gates when you leave a lock? And what about the paddles?
I always try to close lock gates and paddles. This is of course much harder when you are on your own (I sometimes open just one gate).
:-)
Forsaking the art galleries for the country. Always a difficult choice.
