The production of Disney’s “The Black Cauldron” (1985) featured years of development and countless revisions. The result certainly didn’t earn much appreciation by audiences and critics of the time, due to the lack of interesting characters and being probably the darkest Disney feature film (that scared most of the children who saw it), yet, almost causing the studio’s end. However, over the years the movie became a classic among movie-afficionados and indeed it is the darker and mythical moments that make the movie great fun (to fear), especially its villain, the devilish horned king.
For the score veteran composer Elmer Bernstein could be won. While his score does feel a bit reminiscent of his prior work for “Ghostbusters” (1984) at times, it mainly stands out as a great adventurous soundtrack and serves the movie‘s tones very well and is rightfully beloved as the movie among the fans. Enjoy!
I remember at the time when it came out, the marketing was, interesting. I recall an interview re; the production where they boasted about how the sound of the caldron....going off....was inspired by and included the sound of the NASA Space Shuttle blasting off.
'The Black Cauldron' was a darker animated feature for Disney and the scary images had parents not taking their kids to the movie back in 1985, but that was a bit ridiculous when one thinks about it considering that 'Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs' had scary imagery with the evil Queen/witch hag, not to mention 'Pinocchio', 'Bambi', 'Dumbo', 'The Rescuers', etc.
One can hear a lot of 'Ghostbusters', 'Heavy Metal', etc. influences in this 'Black Cauldron' score due to the compositions as well as the unusual orchestrations which makes sense since 'Heavy Metal' was released in 1981 and 'Ghostbusters' came out in 1984.
My point is every composer has a signature style, particularly during certain eras, and Elmer Bernstein, just like John Williams, John Barry, Jerry Goldsmith, James Horner, Ennio Morricone, etc. has a wonderful and very recognizable style. :)
Heavy metal another fantasy animation classic of the eighties with a superb score by Bernstein and ghostbusters another fantasy classic with a great score
It doesn’t sound anything like Ghostbusters.
Great score
It's funny that whenever one sees a copy of Time magazine dedicated to Disney, all of the other animated features over the years are shown; even the most recent ones, but 'The Black Cauldron' is either ignored entirely or there is just a very brief blurb about this movie.
It is funny that you are a talking monkey. :)
It was a terrible embarrassment to them. It was not a series suited to Disney, they butchered it to try to make it into another "The Sword in the Stone"-esque movie and it came out too dark for their tastes but also had lost what made the books appealing. Just a mess. So they swept it under the rug and locked it away in the vault. Poor Lloyd Alexander...RIP.
A dark and powerful suite of music from a dark and powerful score. Well done and thanks Fred.
Truly a incredible score to a highly undervalued animated film. The story is dark and rich, the animation is beautiful and reminiscent of the Golden Age of Animation. Thanks for posting this suite.
This was the first Disney movie my husband took me to see when we first met. Love this movie. Love the soundtrack. Wish I could find an original vinyl LP. Thank you so much for this wonderful suite, Soundtrack Fred!🥰
Yes!
A cult animated feature, rarely exhibited in the brazilian TV ( here, " The Magic Cauldron " ). In " Cauldron Born " I listen, I guess so, Martenot Waves, right? Mr. Bernstein used this picturesque instrument in " Legal Eagles ", one year later ( one of the my favourite scores (). Good work, Fred, and thanks again!!!
Amazing score! Thanks for posting it.
Thanks for the music!
Many Thanks, Fred! As always nicely done. :)
Elmer Bernstein is always hit and miss but I would nevertheless like to have this soundtrack
شدعيلك ابن عمي على هاي الموسيقى
Ah one of the few orchestral pieces that features the Ondes Martenot! Id say way better than a Theremin.
