True story in my Asian mixed family about the “I love you” thing: Mom is Japanese, born in Okinawa but raised in Hawaii. For all of my childhood never said “I love you” to anyone in the family. It’s was normal. So much so that when I was 16ish she said right out of the blue to me “I love you.” I was immediately suspicious and responded “what do you want from me?” (Like doing chores and stuff like that). She looked at me very sad and said “Nothing, I just love you.”
And I still insisted that she wanted something from me. (It was a gut reaction.)
This is what happens to us if our fellow Asians say “I love you “ so out of the blue.
When Asians say “I love you”, you check to see if the world is ending.😂😂
P.S. I know my Mom loves me. She says it every so often now. I’m not immediately suspicious when she does now.

I‘m Southeast Asian and the I love you thing is very relatable. No one in my family say’s I love you. We show love not through words but more through action.

I didn't grow up in a family that said "I love you" we just didn't. As I was growing up in my 20's, I didn't know what love was, I knew when I liked somebody, really liked them, but never knew what love was - until now that I am old. Maybe it is different for others.
