    I’m realizing that Hugh has always had the ability to say everything with just those mesmerizing and expressive eyes of his, no words just one look and you know the feeling he’s trying to convey. I saw him constantly do that in House M.D but this is the first time I saw him doing it in a bit, it was really touching I want to hug Gannet now

      Equally, it's fascinating to see how menacing Stephen Fry can be with just a look. I'd love to see him do a really tough psychological thriller or horror film. I think he could a play a psychopath really well.

    This was made back when people didn't just accept mass layoffs, before they'd become normal. Today it seems strange to hear someone say they expect to work for a firm their entire life.

    Hugh can act the obnoxious agressor as well as the innocent passive fool very convincingly. I felt sorry for him, even more so bc he kept being polite and understanding while taking all that.

    Always loved these two, and I like this sketch (the secretary and floor wordplay was genius), nevertheless this was also quite sad. Surely it was intentional (Hugh Laurie's performance is key here) still...I laughed but I left with more sadness

      Here in the United States, at that time period, it still would've put him below the poverty line. I can't imagine he'd have been doing particularly well on that salary at the time, either.

      In the UK, £13000 today is about minimum wage for a full time job. Low, especially for someone of his age, but not unheard of

      Just checked with the 'Historical UK inflation calculator' (inflation.stephenmorley.org/) : 1 pound in 1989 is equivalent to 2.46 pound now, so that makes a salary of (appr.) 18450 pound now.

      And that is part of the routine. There is nothing funny about being fired and people who fire people often enjoy it too much and don't care at all what this will mean to the person they are firing. It is also pointing out that staff costs may look huge at the macro level but on the micro most people are not really paid that much. It is also having a go at the zeitgeist of glorying in mass layoffs ... unfortunately that continues to this day.
