Indeed. Could've been a setup to another joke as well. When Stephen asked Hugh to relive making love the night before, I was half expecting the reply "I thought you didn't want any stiffness."
Another good one was Stephen’s response to Hugh saying “It’s not your fault. I’m rather tired” to which Stephen replied “We’ll try again later, if you like.” I love Stephen’s use of word play and double entendres.

Used to watch Saturday Night Live, and when it was on Fridays too. Lot of new talent started on that show... Harry Enfield, Julian Clarey. ..could do with something similar now, to get new faces up on stage. Most of it was brill.
Stephen was remarkably young and fit. I still do have a weakness for that tall sweeping frame of his, especially during the INSANE ending. Btw, loved the "between the legs" misunderstanding! *evil giggle*
Stephen Fry had to consult a hypnotherapist to overcome his fear of singing in order to perform this sketch. He tells the full story on Richard Herring's podcast: ua-cam.com/video/Fvpb82-jw3c/v-deo.html#t=1h11m14s
That is an awesome story. Would never have guessed that he was afraid of singing and thought that he was a professionell singer for quite some time. His singing in the sketch is brilliant.
Does anyone know what the piece actually is? It sounds a lot like Gottingen by Barbara and I can't find a way of searching "Chelper/Schelper's Bridal Nocturne" that shows anything. Just curious if the two are related.
@@birkbrene1972 Huh, looks like the question I was answering got deleted sometime in the last eleven years? Somebody asked "Why would anybody put a lock on piano keys?" I'm pretty sure I didn't just drop that random fact apropos of nothing. Anyways, thanks for bringing back memories of a simpler time.

I just LOVE this as a pianist myself. Stephen Fry clearly appears to know nothing about music at all as he doesn’t understand that’ ‘ A’ is a musical key , and what the heck has having a girlfriend and making love got to do with playing the piano ?
Fry was so terrified of singing that he says he got hypnotised so he would feel a sense of calm when he said the words "Play it, bitch"
Wow! And he was utterly brilliant when it came to it ❤️❤️
I’m glad they edited out the bits where he clucked like a chicken
It shows too! Love this comment

"No, I said we don't want any stiffness!"

But then he went on to have him remember making love. There's gotta be at least a little stiffness there.
His legs flail about but his torso remains stationary. Impressive.
His legs fly about as if independent from his body!
- Chandler Bing.
''good evening Hugh''
''good evening''
''excellent, well done''
lol wtf
Not only are they hilariously funny, they are both academically brilliant.

Wouldn't be surprised if Howard Goodall had a hand in this.
One of those partnerships where ALL the musical ability is in one half and the other just flounders hopelessly. See also Cook and Moore.
During their reunion special stephen mentions he took hypnotist courses to sing this
When Oscar Wilde teaches Dr House to play piano
It does make me laugh that the "teacher" is the one who doesn't know how to play any instruments 😂
Harry Enfield is the conductor and Paul Whitehouse is the guitarist.
What a cast. Lol
"If you're not loose at the knee, you might as well not be here!" So that's my problem.

Genius. Thanks for posting albeit some time ago.
Thanks for commenting, albeit some time (17 years) after they posted.😂
I love the random lyrics.
Frighteningly special

The man women swoon over just happens to be gay, how paradoxical

Ah, I well remember the vocal tour de force that was Mestingua Condoriosis Bleve. Pity she was unavailable on that frighteningly special night.
🤣😂 hahaha.yeehaw.excellent.soooo glad I watched it till the end...🤗😆
Anyone know what year this is from? I'd say about 1987-ish.

Is it Nocturne Opus 9 No 2 by Chopin ?
Isn't the man on the mic in the beginning the one who plays the buttler in the ABOFAL sketch on Mr Hophouse?
It's Ben Elton!
Is that Harry Enfield and Paul Whitehouse in the band?
Yup
Nice row of Buddy Holly Elvis Costellos
4:48 was waiting for "sorry, this never happened to me before"
Elvis Costello playing that paisley telecaster?!
Nope. Looks like Paul Whitehouse.
And Harry Enfield conducting? No idea who's on bass, though.
Surely the bass player is supposed to look like (Costello's pal and producer) Nick Lowe.
Looks like Greg Proops?
Paul Whitehouse playing guitar in the band?
I love it when Stephen is curt with Hugh "not too frothy"🤤😍 so seuctively alpha male and commanding
