YR is not a darker version of HS. The only commonality these shows share are queer leads. That's it. HS is a very teen show and Young Royals is a more adult teenage show but not oversexualize and bigger stakes. I would also say that Heartstopper is more with homophobia and YR isn't. Simon isn't frowned upon bc he's gay, it's bc he's not rich or has a wealthy family & name.
Yes! The underlying conflict throughout the show is the class structure. The Crown's problem with Wilhelm's choice is not he's a boy - it's because he's a lower class commoner.

I’ve watched almost every reaction to Young Royals at this point, but I enjoyed watching yours. It’s such a wonderful show that tends to surprise people. Looking forward to seeing how you react to the rest of the season. You’re lucky to be able to go right into Season 2 when it premieres November 1st!

You're so right about the tonal difference between Young Royals and Heartstopper. YR feels more gritty, more realistic, more *visceral* - it's also a stressful thing to watch though the reward of slogging through is worth it. Footnote: I actually fell in love with Simon at the exact same time as Wilhelm (choir scene)

Speaking of norwegian, I really recommend you SKAM, it's an amazing norwegian series about teenagers and their daily struggles, it's very raw and realistic. People around the world were crazy about it back in 2016 (I still am). Each season is about diffrent person, I especially recommend season 3, which is the LGBT season (aka the best one).

Isak - the main character from S3 appears in S1 too so I recommend it if you want to know his backstory. On the other hand, a lot of people watch only season 3, and honestly I can't blame them, it's definitely the best one. It's up to you, I guess.
Yessss! Season 3 especially is so amazing and even though it's about teenagers people from all ages can definitely enjoy it and find something relatable.
