So how did the Lions take the First Test? | The Squidge Report
Вставка
- Опубліковано 27 лип 2021
- A win twelve years in the making, a battle after eighteen months of waiting. The Lions pulled off a huge comeback against reigning World Champions South Africa to give themselves a 1-0 lead in the series- How did they do it, and what did the Springboks show us to take into test two?

Just a quick note: I have a policy on the channel of not talking about refereeing decisions (Or at least trying to), for exactly the reason we've seen this week. I think talking about them is kinda boring (You either agree or disagree, nothing to talk about), and they dominate too much of rugby discourse- This week all people have talked about was the referee, rather than the two teams, so I want my videos to try and readdress the balance. Sorry if this is disappointing to anyone, but it's an approach I intend to stick with. Thank you all for watching and being interested enough in my opinion to ask.
That said, it should have been a card.
@@SquidgeRugby ha ha
Spot on, refereeing decisions are a river of shite that flows both ways.
@@glasblaidd never heard something more accurate
Not at all disappointing, in fact, a relief! Greetings
I cant believe squidge got noticed by south Africa's water boy
How does Eben’s 1.2m long arms reach for a ball sideways and gets it with his fingertips and still not regarded as not skew though. No mention of Watsons tackle or Willie’s controversy. A bit underwhelmed by today’s episode. But then again Squidge isn’t here for the Refs but analysis.
@@everythingentertainment2518 It's because they aren't that controversial mate but understandable if youre a Boke - I know i'd be fuming if it was England.

@@sebp3249 all We ask for is a level playing field Pal.👍🇿🇦
@@everythingentertainment2518 you don't question, you just watch, and leave it to the officials on the field and dare I say in the "telly match booth". Congrats to the B&I lions. The boks will have to step up a good few gears for next test match. I still can't wrap my head around playing in a stadium, on home ground, with no crowds. Yes, I know why, but am getting so tired of the lack of atmosphere.🇿🇦
When all of this is said and done, we need the Squidge & Rassie Show..
😆😍
Name a more iconic duo.
Has no bones left from the previous tackle, and just falls over...a classic. Bwahahaha
I'm surprised Squidge doesn't play for the Lions. He side stepped the Le Roux try no try issue like a boss.
Not to mention somehow justified the illegal steal from Itoje 2m out from the try line. Amazing one that
He doesn't talk about refereeing decisions.
@@DroneEvolutionServices the thing is it wasn't a try by le Roux but not for the fact that he was ahead of the kick coz on the available footage it can't be said he was.
Rather de Allende's pass to Am was forward-it clearly was.But ref's have been ignoring this issue for a long time and the black jerseyed team are experts at the non forward forward pass.
I'm South African so correct to disallow try but wrong reason coz Lions got a penalty instead of a scrum.
Rugby woke up years before soccer with cameras etc but it is still behind the NFL.
There should be moving cameras in line with the ball to adjudicate this kind of thing.
The Lions supporters forget that in 2009 they were bleating about Jasques Fourie's try in the last few minutes of the 2nd test plus even Royalty were bleating about the disallowed English try by the left winger in the 2007 RWC.
Surely this kind of camera work can't cost trillions.
Lastly do Lions supporters bleat coz it sounded like it 2009?
Springbok sort of bleat but hopefully not this Sat
@@MrMrilikepie1234
He also very clearly pointed out Mostert’s blatantly illegal clear out right before it. So it should have been a penalty to the Lions anyway. Or did you just decide to “side step” that? In the words of the OP.
Like Cheslin
“A man who hits uncannily with the exact force of a sack containing every spud in Wexford.” 😂 Best description of Tadhg ‘Jukebox’ Furlong.
As a Wexford man, let me tell you - that’s a lot of potatoes and it’s also true 😅
Had me in stitches.
Being from Argentina I was trying to figure out what that phrase means: Google it. Yeah spot on.
Could you analyse at least one of the Australia-France games? The third test was quite dramatic, and I would love to see your opinion on a certain red card
Squidge often can't cover Aus-NZ games due to licensing issues with the match footage.
would love to hear his take on the current state of wallabies and especially the turnout of the games. i found each game (especially the first and 3rd) games to be really weird
Would love to hear his opinion on how much has changed with this young wallaby back line. Bump
As an Aussie who cares about the French series, the Lions series happens once every 4 years, so that would be a priority.
I'm sure his opinion on the red card is the same as everyone else's: twas never a red card. Typical kiwi ref jumped straight to his pocket and couldn't wait to dish out a red card for a good dominant tackle. Sad thing is that same ref has control of the second Lions test
@@elscruffomcscruffy8371 yikes. worst part about the whole situation was how the tackled player carried on after. we dont need that shit in our game. keep it in soccer

As a Wexford man I can both confirm that this is an accurate measurement of furlongs hitting force and also that sacks of spuds are the units we use for measuring force in general. #factchecker
I love Kwagga but man the Springboks miss Duane
Kwagga feels like a player you play against Namibia.
@@MasterAppels Say that again, I dare. He just isn't a good 8. He killed it as a flanker last night.

@S MM yeah squidge mentioned in this video that kwaggas biggest problem was that he got sucked into the rucks. He just needs more experience to know not to go for every ball when you get your eyes on it

Loved watching Am's game on the weekend, he's a fantastic centre
Yer he is, I didn't realise his tackle on Daly is illegal. Is there a wrap there? Looks like a should charge.
@@benrawson007 I would say it was legal, if you watch at 8:20 his right arm is around Daly and his left arm is in just a good enough position to get away with it. If he'd tucked it underneath him like Farrell does then it would have been a charge but I reckon there's enough of a wrap to get away with it
@@chewy3036 The arm that 'wraps' is the opposite that makes the hit, it's a shoulder charge.
The point is every team has an argument.
@@benrawson007 I guess we'll agree to disagree on that tackle but frankly so much was missed by the ref that I don't think he'd call an illegal tackle if it jumped up and bit him in the face

Hardly fair to says the Boks were outplayed considering the inconsistency and incompetence of the officials in charge...Whether Rassie did the correct thing or not the evidence is all there, and Im glad someone has finally called World Rugby on it...Boks have gotten the short end for far too long...

This was the best.
This commentary was so well written! Excellent tactical review!
Ja, balanced, insightful and honest. Unlike much of the press. One Guardian journo wouldn't have been out of place reporting for the Queen during the Boer War!
Totally, he's the best. The only thing I'm not sure I agree with is the bomb-squad analysis. I don't think it would've mattered if they were subbed on for the first scrum, there just seemed to be something off in that pack. Those lads are used to starting games so I don't see how the time they're brought in would make a massive difference to their own approach, especially as they were going up against a pack that had made no substitutes yet and played 40 mins. I'm sure it was a ring-rust and as those lads are starting test 2 it will be better sorted.
Squidge is ridiculously good. Real mind-blowing insight for the average/casual rugby fan... hilariously delivered.
The best show on UA-cam
Lions got a hiding 2nd game. Proper ref this time. Itoje and Curry, filthy players.
Am I the only one here who thinks that Argentina should also get a chance to host the lions like SA, NZ, and Aus? I feel like that would be an interesting addition...
in that case France as well?
I think early tour matches like against Japan would be a good start
Don't be rediculas....
Argentina are a rising force for sure but probably need a WC win first.
In 1989 after the Lions beat Australia 2-1 , they played another game against an 'Anzac' team which is Aus /NZ combined although I think it was only 3 or 4 Kiwis. The Lions won 19-15.

Jaco Johan should start the second test
Thanks Rassie for being brave enough to put your position on the line to highlight the biased and disrespectful refereeing towards the Boks... In our own backyard nogal. Just because this is the continent of Africa and you guys in the "First World" countries have managed to monopolize how the rugby rules are interpreted and subtly changed to suit yourselves, doesn't make it right.

Squidge has definitely been working his ass off staying up on this video and uploaded it as soon as he finished
Beautiful. Absolutely extraordinary. 10/10, highly recommend
Wow this is early! Great to have 2 days before the next test, thanks :-)
I write this two days after we won the third test so I will just say, I find it fascinating that we beat the Welsh coach three times in two years and his experienced captain and this last one was exactly the same score as the second semi final. For a commentary of the third test just look at Squidge's take on the Second semi final of the Rugby World Cup. Same coaches, same captains, same result. I jest. But it was a hard fought final, and I am glad that our team won. Coach Gatland, has a lot of respect for Siya, I saw the highlights of the third test and saw him (Gatland) shake Siya's hand [in as much of a social distancing way as possible]. I also like Rassie and not because he has helped our team to win plenty of matches but also because of the camaraderie he has instilled in the team. Thank you coach. Thank you Siya and team and thank you Gatland for making this a battle, not a walk in the park. See you guys in twelve years two years after we win the RWC for a fourth time. ;-P

Squidge: Long time fan of your match analysis. It rejuvenates the highs and lows of the every game in every aspect.... Thank you and keep up the great work.
Your strategic analysis of general gameplay and tactics are phenomenal, and your comments on tactics from a coach’s perspective is generally spot on. Miles ahead of your peers. The humour is welcome as well, regardless of my personal biases.
While I appreciate your reticence to comment on the referees and match officiating per say, I suspect that I, and many others like me, would appreciate your thoughts on the matter. Perhaps a separate channel on this very subject could do the trick? What do you think?
Loved this analysis Squidge ! Go with boks this game, 🇦🇷🏉

By having the ref and TMO on their side of course. Squidge trying to explain that this game was actually won fairly by the lions. Let's see what happens in game 2. 01:45 that lineout ball I'm not sure I've seen much more of a skew throw, 03:26 check that late no-arms tackle on Faf that wasn't called.. There were quite a few penalties against South Africa missed. Maybe not as important ones but there was a lot missed for both sides.

So impressed how you dissect the important parts of the game..
But I did think that last Saturday's game was a lot to do with match fitness in second half.
South Africa dominated the first half with their tactical kicking.
Also there was a few decisions that could have gone either way ..
The 2nd test will be the proverbial "Kitchen sink" moment for the Lions.
Are the Lions ready ?
We dearly hope so 🤞🙏.....
As an ireland fan, married to a Welsh woman living in England, it is so true on it being nice to cheer for Maro Itoje. Loved it. Still found it very unsettling cheering on Courtney Lawes though!
Whats wrong with Courtney? He seems like a very nice man who works hard and is awesome at rugby.
Now Maro, if I was a welsh irish or scots I think i'd hate him.
Just annoying and on the edge of legal at every interaction and really good at it too.

Can't wait for your review of the second test. And yes, you'r right not to get into the referee bad decisions. What a contrast between the two tests, and refs.
Yes and I hope Squidge has nothing to say about 'controversial decisions' that went against the Lions. He put down his marker-hope he sticks to it
Think we're all hoping for Springboks to pull one back so the 3rd match is more exciting
Oh they did
Without a shadow of doubt, Squidge's analysis of the game is the best.(Disclaimer, I'm not a "purist"). Keep up the good work.
Squidge you are famous now, according to Johan and Jaco. Awesome video
Well played Mr Squidge. If you posted this video on Sunday or Monday I still would have been too angry to watch it. Luckily life moves on and I am chilled out again by Wednesday. Then came along Rassie's hour video and now I am fuming again, but I can watch your video atleast.
Tom Curry late takles Faf at least twice, with no arms. To zero consequence. Itoje steals the ball, on his try line, with his knees on the ground. The boks looked more than half asleep, I’ll admit, but the lions had more help than they deserved.
Maybe this is Rassie’s way of secretly confirming your Munster Wedge theory!! :O
I think you are missing something really interesting here and that is the very real possibility that the reason “Just another day (without you)” by Jon Secada was such a one-hit wonder was because Rassie Erasmus teamed up with him for a brief cameo in songwriting and the song is a forward pass from past to future Rassie lamenting the fact that he’d have to spend just another day without Duane Vermeulen
I wasn’t sure if other people had the World Rugby Laws app on their phone, but now I know that I’m not alone.
Could we possibly see some little videos on what you think about the up coming line ups? only a few minutes. Would be nice to see you insight on what you think.
Rewatching your Lions SA videos again out of curiosity / 6Nations excitement / morbid compulsion to experience disappointment again at every turn in my life, and had forgotten how much I lolled at the Lawes 'signed up to Jeremy Corbyn's mailing list' zinger. Squidge, never change.
