Matt eating pizza in both our vids is my favourite thing
Haha yes! Wish I would have found a way to get you in this too. Stoked we’ve been crossing paths lately.
Great video! Tbh, I was set on getting the A7IV but this A7RV has my interest now!
Seeing other familiar UA-camrs on someone’s channel always feels like different hero universes colliding
Do you find there to be much difference between the A7RV and the GFX as far as image quality?
I am thinking about possibly upgrading one of my A7iv's to a A7RV or a backup to a GFX for special shots for weddings and engagements. Not sure if the GFX adds that much.
Hey man, great video!
I love the bright/faded film style photos you posted here, if you ever little tutorial did a video on these kind of edits that would be amazing.
Keep up the good work! xx
Can't wait to get mine next month. Late bday present for myself.
hi, I like your glasses, can you give me the link to buy it? thank You
We have found the sensor that will be going into the Nikon Z8. Can’t wait.
Really nice shots, b-roll and colours, I´m enjoying you branching out from Leica/Fuji content.
Benj....so nice to meet you in person last week in NYC. Keep up the great work in your photography and on YT!
Here’s a dilemma!
I’d love to buy the Leica M10-R (not M11), but can’t come to terms with the price. I have a Sony A7iii and I just wish it had a dedicated Shutter Speed and ISO dial. The A7RV seems amazing but still has 500 buttons and menus.
Here’s the question: which camera would take the best photos assuming I know what I’m doing? Even with my Voightlander 75mm M mount lens (with adapter).
I value your opinion 👍🏼👍🏼
Hey hey, I mean, the A7RV is going to give amazing IQ and the Sony system has given me the best Leica M adaptability outside of Leica SLs. It took me a bit to figure out the Sony menus, but the new ones are MUCH better. I also have the top dials set to shutter and ISO making things really easy.
Great breakdown and samples. Fan of your channel. Sony cameras have great features but I do documentary and the skin tones just don't cut it. Chalky and pasty especially in low light. See 7:40.
Haha I believe that more to be user error in a hasty color correction with terrible Times Square lighting than anything
Could you explain us how works the 26Mpix mode. The crop mode i understrand but the downscale 26Mpix i don't understand it. Do you have information about it?
Pre-Ordered this camera when it was announced to replace my A7Riii. Can’t wait!
Hi, If you were looking into moving to the Sony eco-system and you mostly shot photo but were thinking of starting video as well which camera would you go for? The Sony A7R V or the Sony A7 IV ? Is the $2000nzd price gap big enough to lever going for the A7R V or would it be more worth it to save that money and put it into a lens?
I made this video for that!
ua-cam.com/video/4_kO1Epf_bs/v-deo.html
Fwiw, I ended up getting one of each. Had the A7IV and then added an A7RV as well. If you have the money I think it’s worth the upgrade from a feature and overall usability standpoint, but I also don’t think you’d be disappointed with the A7IV by any means
What do you think of color profile? I know Sony has been knocked for their color science. I have a Sony a7ii and am thinking of upgrading to the RV. Has their color science improved from the a7ii?
Massively, yes. I really really disliked Sony’s color before this latest generation
@benjhaisch Thanks for the reply. Do you still have issues with the menus? Supposedly improved them but read one review have to scrool through aall menu items in tab to get to next tab? Thanks Ben
@richardpoland4074 nah, they’re better too. Not the best, but easy enough to navigate.
@benjhaisch Yeah, really don't like colors out of camera on a7ii. And when printing images, colors look dark, washed out and seemed way off what I saw on my pc. People have told me partially due to backlighting on monitor. Also battery life is terrible, only get about 60 shots on a battery. I think they sold me a lemon. Probably towards end of production run. Camera model had been on the market for six or seven years and picked it up for about $800. Think I'm going to get a7RV. Was considering Canon EOSR5 because of color science but you say Sony is lot better now and I'm too far down the rabbit hole with Sony lenses, i.e. have 16-35 GM, 24-105, and 100-400 GM.
Great info. Thanks!
I have one on order. Looking for a good lens adapter recommendation?
Moving up from a Nikon D850. Would love to use a couple of my ff lens, until I build up a new lens collection. I have read some horror stories regarding adapters.
Any info would be helpful.
I'm not sure with Nikon, sorry!
I do have a question if you don’t mind.
You mentioned in one of your videos that you were trying M mount lenses on your FX3 for video work , I am just curious to know how did that turn out , if you had any success with that? Nice work 👍🏽
Hi Benji. Good video. Maybe you can give me some quick feedback. I got rid of my A7R5 for the Leica SL2S as I had a Q2 before. I’m still not sure I made the right decision. The images out of both cameras are superb. Any feedback on your comparison between these two would be appreciated.
They're a bit different for sure, but it's all about preferences as both are phenomenal cameras. I probably would have purchased the SL2-S as well, but the AF just wasn't where I wanted it to be for my needs. I ended up getting the A7IV and just picked up an A7R5 as well.
@@benjhaisch your right. I’ve only had the SL2S a few days, but I can see there is some lag as I try to move a round a white board doing a couple training videos. I suspect that will be my Achilles Heel moving forward if I keep it. That’s the reason I got rid of Q2. Even for photos it seemed to hunt more than it should have. I have an FX3 and might just go back to A7R5 for photo work, even though I was trying to go fully Leica. But something told me to keep the FX3 as well until I figured out the Leica. Thanks again.
Thanks Benj. What ISO were those night shots taken at? Seems like the noise is really low. As a M11 shooter I'd be interested to see a comparison. Either way I think I'm going to upgrade my A7iii to the A7RV.
Can you elaborate on how the 36MP mk4 has the same sensor as the 61MP mk5?
The A7RIV and A7RV have the same 61mp sensor. The A7IV has the 33mp sensor.
God how useful this video is!!! thanks man, i watched whole video and i found that I knew about camera. please make more useful contents like this about alphabetic expressions of photography and Video camera. thanks a lot, subscribed
I am about to leave Nikon, especially after today with the release of Z6iii is going to be a bigger heavier body. Which means my Z7ii will be bigger if the Z7iii is ever released. So I am moving to Sony for the 1st time. I am a landscape shooter, no video. Now I read various rumours on the web about the EVF resolution drops on half pressing the shutter. Is this the case? I always back button focus so do you loose resolution in the EVF in this mode too?
I have decided to go with A7RV and the A7CR with 40mm F2.5 24mm F1.4 Sigma 90mm F2.8 i prime lenses. The Zooms for inclement UK moorland weather 24-50mm F2.8 16-25mm F2.8 24-70mm F4. I think this would be a light weight kit for most things. I do not intend to carry the whole lot together. Your opinions and thoughts would be greatly appreciated thank you.
It does, but with landscapes, how much do you need to half press the shutter?
Any idea Benj when you will be able to give more definitive results as to the low light capabilities and upgraded continuous autofocus system on the A7R V? I'm trying to make a decision between buying the A7 IV versus the A7R V especially given how much you've loved the A7 IV. Low light and continuous AF for tracking people and animals is especially important for me. If it wasn't for the significant upgrades on the EVF and screen, I would've already purchased the A7 IV.
Hey thanks Greg, I was actually just talking with someone at Sony today requesting another loaner for those exact comparisons. I'm not sure if the RAWs are able to be edited yet, but that will also be huge.
@@benjhaisch Thanks! Hope you get that loaner soon!
Thanks for the video. How does it compare in your opinion to the Leica M11 in picture quality?
It should be very very close, but I haven't been able to use them both together yet.
What the anamorphic lens you use on your Sony system?
Hi Benj, thanks for your Videos and Infos. I ordered the Camera in Germany :-) Upgrade for my old a7R II
What ist the Arca Plade / Cage on your Camera?
Great review for a pre-production drop. These are super helpful. Right now, it looks like there are some nice upgrades from the A7IV, but maybe not enough to make the price difference worth it?
It all just depends on what your needs are imo. The usability improvements alone are going to be worth it for some people (like myself, I’m really tempted to upgrade). The 26mp APS-C crop and Medium RAW in FF is pretty fantastic too. Would be crazy helpful for documentary stuff when you need a bit more reach.
can you please make an comparison with Sony fx3 especially in videos quality, shots on the night...
You probably could sell your two M10s and Canon R6 to get an M11 + α7RV if you find a good deal on both. Plus Sony’s lens mount is far more diverse than Canon’s which is also a financial incentive. Grab a M11 grip and the Visoflex 2 to have it fully featured for any job you do.
I sold my R6 in June for an A7IV :)
now, im about to get one of the, in one hand I like the fx3 and in the other hang a like the a7r5 too, im 30 photos and 70 video guy, which one you consider best long term investesment, im worried about the management of high iso (I like shot in the night like in a city when I TRAVEL, and the rolling shutter, is that a problem? can I shot with lower mp in the a7rv like 26mp? to manage better the high iso?
So it appears the new A7RV has all the features/capabilities of both the A7RIV and A7IV plus improved EVF, rear LCD, IBIS, etc. is there anything it doesn’t do? Thank you for the video.
The only thing it doesn't is fast shooting and accurate af on very fast moving subjects towards you bc it's a slow camera. Bc of that I'm waiting for the A9III
Hey Benj, maybe a silly question, but do those lower resolution modes result in cropping in on the frame changing the focal length?
No, for instance, if you select 26 mp, it resamples to 26 mp, unless you're taking crop photos, then it reads out 1:1 from the sensor. It's really convenient because it'll be cleaner than a natively 26 megapixel camera as it uses more dots than a natively 26 megapixel camera to create the 26 megapixel output.
@@mbvglider that’s awesome, it’s like the M11 then vs what the Q2 does essentially. Seems like an amazing feature to not be stuck in high res all the time.
Can you review the Hasselblad X2D ?
I put in a request
@@benjhaisch Can't wait, I had a dream where I had this camera.
@@googleinc6033 amen
So compared to the A7 IV, how was the low light performance in ISO noise?
It’s so hard to know without being able to see the raw files, but when resized to the same MP count, it looks like the A7IV probably is a stop better?
@@benjhaisch Thanks for the note! I have the A7 IV and am happy with it. Also have the A7rIV and was wondering if worth upgrading from the A7rIV.
informative 11min review.
Hi Benj, thanks for the review. Can the screen be folded back on itself, so you cannot see it? I haven’t seen a video that shows it can yet.
Yes
@@benjhaisch thanks!
How big of an impact does LCD AND EVF resolution/dots play on the viewing? Currently on an XT3 and was planning on getting an A7IV which more or less has the same LCD/EVF resolution as the XT3. Does 9 million EVF 2 million show up significantly or is it a less of a return for money spent
As you go, it’s all diminishing returns in terms of money spent, right? That being said, it’s a pretty noticeable difference.
Only if ' image Quality ' of a photograph = More Mega Pixels.
Hello benji thanks for the review,do you see diferences in the colors in the a7rv and the a7iv? Thanks!
Not much. It's all pretty similar. Not exact but very easy to correct to
@@benjhaisch thanks for your reply , i am thinking in buy one of this to use for photograpy 90% in cases
Yeah they’re both fantastic cameras. The user experience of the A7RV is a lot better but if you don’t need the extra resolution, the A7IV still puts out a great image.
@@benjhaisch thanks a lot really apreciate your replys, being honest i am not sure if i need more than 33 MP,i shoot in fashion but for the moment máximum i print in magazines .
How big are the medium files
Oh hell yes, my a7rV blows away my M10 in terms of resolution, dynamic range and noise. So why do I use my M10 almost exclusively? It's got a lot to do with simplicity and ease of use. The coolness of the camera is a big factor too.
This or the fx3?
How were the file sizes when editing the JPEGS
Which 50mm anamorphic lens did you use?
Sirui 50/1.8 for APS-C
photography comparison between Sony A7 lV and A7r5
I like ever single thing about it. I like this and it is way more capable than I am. I like it so much that I would have bought it. only one thing I am missing fucking 4k dollars.
Not a 4k camera imo. I'd love that VF over the a7ivs but that alone isn't enough. Since most of the camera internals are the same, should've kept pricing of the previous generation, like the new r6ii did. The sensor still being a ridiculously slow readout is the biggest bummer. I'm a sony fanboy, but I think the r5 is still a better all around camera at this price point and its a couple years old...Only that sensor is not bsi and sub par which is why I never jumped to canon. First world problems.
This or the fx3 for cinema video ?
Why does an army of photo/video professionals not use a gimbal for video shooting? I see the one guy using an Atomos which is promising.
It’s all preference. First off, I don’t even own a gimbal. Second, I’d you’re testing the IBIS, a gimbal will be counter productive ;)
The a7r5 smokes all cameras period.
The sensor are the SAME as in the A7RIV/A7RIVA, so the SAME image quality as those Cameras !
thanks now i want to spend thousands of dollars
Sony's bodies grow in size and weight every year like Kardashian's butt. They need to return to their roots, to slim and light original A7 design.
Best image quality to me is still the Leica Q2
Sony oranges still look offensive to the eye.
haha, everything is adjustable in post though.
@@benjhaisch that's a common misconception. I've used all raw software available on Windows and did dozens of profiles and colorcheck matching. You can mitigate Sony bad hues, in some cases even fix them completely, but there is no possibility to do it for every picture, every illuminant in a consistent way. You want to waste time tinkering with every raw file, then buy Sony.
Haha I mean, I’ve spent more hours in Lightroom than literally anything else over the last decade and every raw file is workable at this point.
@@benjhaisch Lightroom is the worst raw editing software when it comes to demosaicking, noise reduction, tonality and color editing. It's great for bookkeeping, searching, filtering, etc.
Since Leica owns a 51% holding in Panasonic chip and sensor production in all 9 Japanese sensor foundries, I seriously doubt Leica used a Sony sensor. Over the last 10 years Leica sensors have been designed by TowerJazz, an Israeli company. My understanding they contract with a California company to design the sensor, the same company the NRO uses to make sensors for recon satellites. Then the design is manufactured in Panasonic foundries in Japan. The 60 megapixel commonality more likely comes from the lens ability to resolve the light particles, and all camera makers of FF cameras bump up against the same physics.
Another interesting addition is that up through the 40 megapixel M sensor, all the M sensors to my knowledge have been designed and manufactured in Europe, a French company and manufacturing in Switzerland. SL2 47 megapixel sensor is likely first sensor Leica made outside Europe after acquiring those Panasonic foundries. Leica has been retooling two of those foundries so what’s to come or has come in the M11 are very state of the art with designs that share dna with US spy satellites. You get what you pay fore.
The m11 uses the Sony sensor.
It’s a Sony sensor
These are the sub companies of Tower; you’d be surprised to find Nikon Z cameras on the corporate advertising. Lol. Jazz Semiconductor · Jazz Technologies · TowerJazz Panasonic Semiconductor Co Ltd · TowerJazz Japan KK · Jazz Technologies, Inc. do some research you’ll be surprised what digging around these corporate sites what you can uncover. I’ve never been able to confirm one Sony sensor in a Leica. Everyone seems to think pixel count is proof, that’s silly. You might also be surprised to find that some chips are made from other designs stitched together. The 50 megapixel MF sensor was created by stitching four APSC sensors to create one MF sensor. And there you go a GFX. Research sensor stitching technology. I’ve seen an X-ray of that chip and you can see that 4 chips have been fused into one.
@@williaminbody205 that's a lot of words to still be wrong.
No Type-C?!! 🙄🙄🙄
It has USB-C? Is that what you’re referring to?
@@benjhaisch I saw Alpharumor presented a comparison table with A7R4, A7R5 has no type-C!! It is a pretty bad news. Why A7R5 terminal connection different from others in Sony Alpha family and complicate user’s cable system?!! No PD33/66/100 fast changing too!!
Meh.. Too clinical ! It's definitely no Fuji.
When will sony , nikon , canon release the 120mp sensors they been speaking of doing for past like what 5 years. The human eye can see over 500mp. I been stalling on spending 10k for a camera rig for a like 7th expensive hobby of mine but yea where are the sensors that compete with fuji 102mp at.
Would be curious how leica m mount lenses perform on this puppy. Also, what is your impression of the evf? Is it good? Does it feel like the SL evf did back in the day or is it computer screeny' feeling ish'? Thanks!
I really should have brought my 50lux and an adapter! Didn't know I was going to be able to get a couple of days with it
@@benjhaisch evf ?
