"Seventy-Six Trombones" for Theatre Organ

- “Seventy-Six Trombones” is a rousing march composed by Meredith Willson for “The Music Man” in 1957. Willson was well-versed in the American march, having played in John Philip Sousa's band in the 1920’s. The number of 76 trombones is likely a reference to 1776, making this a perfect march for America’s Independence Day! Arranged for Theatre Organ by Harry Garland.
Sir... there is only ONE word for what I just heard and saw.... W O W !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
That is so kind of you to say. Thank you.
Damn one very talented gentleman; I can barley walk and chew gum at the same time🤣
Thank you!
😆😆😆😆 same here
LOL!
That’s the kinda music a little boy back in the early 50’s could get excited about, growing up we went to any circus that came to town or a day at the amusement park, I had all but forgot about those days and thanks sir to you , you brought it all back and the smiles thinking about those warm days long ago.
I am so glad that this music revived such pleasant memories for you. I love this kind of music too!
...Nice moves there
They must be the hardest instruments to play with all those bits to manipulate but what an amazing job he did
Awesome! A one-man band 👋👋
What a fantastic rendition and what superb skill Harry Garland has, remarkable sir.
When I was little, I sang loudly and proudly "Seventy-six Strong bones.....!
I like those lyrics, Hannah!
😂
😆😆😆
Wonderful. Maybe we should go back to that. Some of today's movies suck. Wouldn't this be wonderful in a theater again? Thank you. That is talent!!! ❤❤❤
There are a few theatres that still have these wonderful instruments playing, but unfortunately very few!
That was at least 77 trombones or more! And I heard at least one euphonium. 💛
Bravo! Bravo! What a beautiful composition and playing par excellence!
Thank you. I am glad that you enjoyed it!
Terrific, foot tapping and smiling. So enjoyed this.
Thank you Margaret! I am glad that you enjoyed it.
My late grandmother had an organ as well, though not as elaborate and as many pedals and such, but it was always neat to watch her play hyms and Christmas songs for us as kids. Too bad this is sort of a dying art these days.
For some reason the market for home organs came and went. It is a shame. There are signs of a resurgence of interest in the instrument, though, and I am hopeful that its popularity will grow once again!
@@hgarlandThe old home organs were quite limited compared to what is available today.
They are now using digital samples from actual pipe organ installations and the electronics that reproduce the sounds are better.
You can be in a large cathedral or a small theatre or almost whatever You want.
I agree!
Who needs a marching band when you have an organist with an instrument like that?
A beautifully jolly tune, beautifully executed, and very enjoyable rendering.
Thank you very much.
❤ Magnificent! Thank you!
Thank you, Blake!
Good entertainment Harry! My late friend George Wright would be proud of you sharing your talent purely for people's enjoyment, as he often did on impromptu occasions. You may remember during the early days of Stanford's EE Department's summer session of 1975 when I gifted you with a vinyl double album of GW's organ tunes. Those were the days--for both of us!
Good to hear from you, Ed! I knew little about the Theatre Organ in those days, and learned a lot by talking with you and learning of your friendship with George Wright. Of course Jim Angell introduced me to Tom Hazelton's performances at Cap'ns Galley, and I still cherish those musical moments. I hope that all is well with you, and I hope that you are still enjoying the organ.
This takes me back to when Pizza and Pipes restaurants were around. A bunch of us from work would go to a local one after work on Friday, order several pizzas and pitchers of beer and listen to the mighty wurlizer organ that sat in front of a windowed room containing the large pipes and the moving louvers above where the sound came out! What a blast!
That is exactly where I was introduced to the Theatre Organ: Tom Hazleton performing at a "Pizza and Pipes" in Redwood City, California. Oh how I enjoyed those performances!
Bravo!! And nicely arranged!
Thank you!! ❤🎉
Thank you, Ronald!
Fantastic!
fantastic !!!
Thank you very much, Dennis.
Excellent Musical Instrument and Musician. 🎼🎵🎶
Thank you, Robert!
OMG!!!! WHAT AN AMAZING TALENT!!! I could watch him for hrs. ❤❤❤❤❤❤
Thank you so much, Penny. I am glad that you enjoyed it.
Not just the sheer skill it takes, but the choices of the voices on the organ are brilliant. Bravo.
Thank you, Alison!
As a pianist in a church, and I play very little organ, that is amazing!
I am glad that you enjoyed it, Jon.
Just wonderful, Harry!
Thank you! I had a lot of fun arranging and playing this one!
Jest pan wspaniały. Człowiek orkiestra❤
Fajnie jest być całą orkiestrą!
Bardzo fajnie być orkiestrą Ja też o tym marzę. Pozdrawiam❤
Bravo! I loved hearing and seeing the pedals grab the melody! Marvelous!
Thank you George. I am glad that you enjoyed it. Playing the melody line in the pedals is fun!
The Maestro never fails! MANY thanks, Harry. ~ Adam
Thank you, Adam. This was fun!
This is wonderful!! They don’t play songs like this anymore
Thank you. It is a wonderful march. I am glad that you enjoyed it.
Excellent and thank you, most enjoyable… PS and a smart pair of shoes…
Thank you, Sam. The shoes are actually dance shoes, with leather soles and rubber heels, and work well for organ!
I use ballroom dance shoes for my organ shoes. They work great.
Amazingly how great this beautiful song came out.. Harry, you did a fantastic job in playing. I use to play the Hammond Organ years ago and thoroughly enjoyed the sound that it produced. Keep up your beautiful playing and enjoy life as it comes. (CA)
Thank you so much Bonnie.
You are so welcome.
Hi Harry. Your collection of wonderful organ masterpieces reminds me of hot summer days at the ball park with my Dad and Grandfather. Such great memories and I thank you for making them better! God love you Harry, and Happy New Year to you and yours, and your listeners.
Thank you so much Jamie. Wishing you all the best for 2024.
Brawo, Super 🎼Piękne wykonanie
Thank you so much, Grzegorz.
Fantastic. I had a Hammond organ years ago. I regret giving it up. Thank you. 🎼🎹
Thank you Lucie. Perhaps you will return to the Hammond someday. There was a long gap in my study of the organ, but I am so glad that I returned to it!
@@hgarlandIt doesn't show.
This was the BEST version I have ever heard on the organ! Love the 2 feet on the pedals, GREAT JOB !! Our long time friend Leon Berry's selection on his basement Beast was similar.
Thank you, Jeff. Playing that pedal solo was fun!
I thoroughly enjoyed hearing this
Thank you so much Jane. I am glad that you enjoyed it!

Excellent Sir, thank you

Well done!!!
Fantastic tickling of the keys. Bon salut.
Bravo!! That was wonderful!
Thank you William!
It is a most deserving accolade. Your inventive use of the Allen stop list is superb and your orchestral approach to Mr. Willson's piece is noteworthy--especially in the accompaniment where most theatre organists often fail. I am subscribing and look forward to your other posts!
Thank you very much John. Such kind comments from a theatre organist of your stature is an honor indeed!
Absolutely fantastic 👏
Thank you, Peter!
This made me sooo happy! Thanks!

Thank you, Al. I am glad that you enjoyed it!
Now, that's a one man band! Bravo, sir!
Thank you, Kirk!
Bravo!
Thank you!
Amazing performance. Thankyou
Thank you, Andre.
Mastering all the keys and stops would be hard enough but watching the foot work... blimey
Yeah, I'm obsessed with bass pedals. My kit only has the smaller, "spinet" type, but at least it has 21 pedals.
I used to have a Farfisa organ, triple keyboard (2 big, 1 tiny) with concert pedals.
I miss that.
Sadly, I don't have room for anything bigger than what I have.
So when I see someone, like Larry, doing heel and toe, I just love it.
But he did double (both feet) heel and toe!
You really have to "know" the pedals to do that so perfectly.
I can heel and toe, but for me, it's a bit more difficult because I have very wide feet.
I have to play in my socks. I cannot wear organ shoes, but I wish I could because they have the slightly extended heel, which makes it easier.
Oh well. LOL
Remarkable talent and a true lost art! I hope this gentleman continues to hold great performances!
Thank you, Bud. I appreciate your enthusiasm, and I do plan to continue posting performances here!
Excellent performance! This captures the wide variety of the band portrayed in the song quite convincingly.
Thank you! This is a great song for showing off the some of the wonderful sounds we have available on the organ.
Super!
Thank you!
Great music, first time heard on an organ
Thank you, Geon. This piece does work well on the organ!

Wow! You and my late dad would have been best of friends! I remember him playing this on his Conn 652 he had when I was a youngster.
I am sure that he enjoyed that Conn, and you are fortunate to have such fond memories of your dad playing that wonderful instrument!
Wow! Stupendous!
Thank you, Carmen!
Amazing. I loved it. Well done 🙂
Thank you Paul!
Incredible!
Thank you! Excellent playing, and what a beautiful sounding instrument!!
Thank you very much!
When I was a youngster, there was a man in ST. Louis, Mo. who would play the organ before the movie started. This was at the FOX THEATER and his name was Stan Cann( Kann) not sure of spelling. He would rise up out of the center stage seated at a very large organ and do his music. This reminded me of this from many year ago.
Stann Kann was a very famous theatre organist. You are lucky to have heard him!
Love it 👏👏👏👏👏
👍🎹👍🎹👍🎹 Maestro
Outstanding! So much fun to listen to and watch.

An organ is an amazing instrument when played by someone who knows how. Pretty rare these days.
