I love my all black 3v malibu. Fit and finish is perfect. No button stick but ur right my show side grind is off.. also I can't stand how the handles already look a year old and all I do is fidget with it and light carry maybe once a week. I wouldn't care but in my world a $270 knife is not purchased for my work knife..
Excellent, EXCELLENT review. A knife is a cutting tool first, then a fidgeting toy. As usual you picked up all nitty and gritty points missed by other reviewers. It bothered me a lot that every body else was only focusing on the action.
This is one of the few reviews which pointed out the severe issues with the factory edge. Ever since I got mine, I've been searching through all the UA-cam reviews for other people who received a disaster of a grind like I did, but everyone else just gushes about the action, ergos, etc. I've only seen one reviewer who actually tried cutting something with it, and that was only after he reground it. Out-of-the-box, this is more of a $225 fidget toy than an actual cutting tool.
Mine (the reversed tanto) is a first production run. It has pretty even grind lines, the non-schow side is a tiny bit taller though, has a bit of lock stick while unlocking the blade to close it and has no blade play in either direction, rock solid. I like it, but for my medium to large sized hands the scales are a bit small.
thank you for the honest review. mine was very similar, uneven sharpening lines and cutting angle 25 degrees, per side! so 50ish together. on right side at the heel it was more like 25/30… i fixed it to 20 per side not to put sharpening lines too high. very disapointed with the sharpening job they did. but again thank you for the review, didnt see it soon enough :D
Totally agree. So glad I couldn't find one because I know I would have been disappointed. With that blade stock thickness the bte thickness shouldn't be more than 15 thou. The 20cv is a little off putting as well, they should have stuck with 154cm or s35. I appreciate the honest review👍
The grind on it seems like an honest mistake. Protech doesn’t seem like the type of company to cut corners on belts for grinding, so hopefully they address this soon. Thanks for watching👊
@@itsaknifestyle8482 I would have loved a newport grind on this. The Newport has a nicely ground blade and it's not crazy thick bte, at least not mine. You're right about them competing with microtech if they made a few small changes because they really do nail everything else
No blade play whatsoever on mine. Lock stick went away after a couple weeks. Even grind on the spine but the sharpening is slightly uneven. Otherwise it’s basically perfect. Love the aluminum scales except that the coating chips off. I have the textured version in all black
That was a Spyderco, not Sebenza, for grip comparison. EDIT: My wharnie malibu is rock solid. Without checking with calipers, I'd say grind is off a touch. I'm 100% happy with mine, wharnie dlc blade and black handles.
Yeah I noticed that when watching over this video, I insulted the Sebenza😂. That’s awesome, I think the run I had was rushed from Protech which led to the badly off center grind. I saw other people who got theirs at blade show have the same issue. Thanks for watchimg
@@itsaknifestyle8482 Its common to some degree with Protech, as I hear it. Mine is off, so adding up yours and many others, I think the rumor is substantially proven.
After all the hub-bub since 2020 I managed to snag a Malibu for a decent price. The action’s ok, but what struck me was how unrefined the knife seemed to be…thick slabs for scales, too thick blade; looks like they saved on production costs by cutting down on milling/grinding processes. Lazy and unimaginative. Thanks for your honest review. I like buying US-made knives, but if this is a typical product, Reate and WE will fill the gap. My dearest knives are my Rocksteads, Shiros, and a Norseman…none of which are US made. Close to the top are the CRK lines of Sebenza, Inkosi and Umnum, but the creator was from South Africa. Competition is stiff because now it’s global and CNC production is leveling the field. No maker can rest on their laurels, and manufacturing, QC issues will be shouted to the world audience in seconds.
The Malibu on mine also have uneven bevels. The Grind is also taller on one side than the other. I noticed that after you mentioned it on yours. Our knives are essentially twins. I sent my blade back in and get it re-sharpen hoping they'll even it out but nothing. They do have a superb customer service. Great video.
I agree with the comments about the blade, but my biggest issue with this knife is how slick the scales have become. I’ve dropped it more than any knife I own. I quit carrying it for that reason.
It would be cool to see them do a milled version like I mentioned. I know on the mordax they had a smooth version and milled version so maybe they will do that in the future with the Malibu. Thanks for watching
This knife was just re-released with textured scales. They are very grippy. The grinds on my blade are so even that I don’t see a difference on either side. Yes, there is a slight button stick…I put a small dab of nano oil on the button plunger….the stickiness went away. The knife isn’t even close to being broken in. I’m sure it will smooth right out…
I just picked one up (Blue/Stonewashed blade) and it was an absolute turd! The lock stick was horrendous, Grinds uneven, And ergos/grip was poor. Bought it to gift to family member but I returned and got him a Spyderco. Thanks for sharing
"If you want to say something random my comments are the one for you" XD. I hate sharpening Pro Tech´s, they are as you said so asymmetrical. Also i know a few people that bought these and i checked some of them out at a local dealer and the Malibus are pretty bad with their edges. So sad, they have so god build quality other than that. They might just have grown to fast, to quick. Thanks for the honest video.
Their build quality has always impressed me, and they seem like they are trying to make the best knife they can. Hopefully this issue with their grinds catches on and they fix it. Thanks for watching
I don’t know that you’re being real realistic saying “yeah come on just grind it down to 15 to 10 thou BTE” name for me one production knife that comes .010” bte….
It was very hyped up. A lot of reviews had it on their best knives of 2020 list and this knife sells out in minutes when it comes in stock. Thanks for watching

@It's a Knifestyle yep lucked up and found on PVK website a few months ago.. exclusive.. never even heard of 3v. Just wanted a malibu 🤷♂️

Not easy to give a contrary view on a highly popular knife. Thanks.

I wonder if they rushed the batch that my knife was apart of to get ready for blade show and that is why the grind is off. Thanks for watching

Great review! No blade play on mine, and the grind is even but I second your thoughts about thickness behind the edge.

They just released some with the nurled scales like they did on the Runt, but I’m sure they will be hard to get your hands on.
Great review thx…
love the orange peel finish on my we esprit

The Grind on mine is messed up as well. Way out, worse than yours. I had a Protech godfather was the same way. It was the operator even.
I don't think I would like the uneven grind. Thanks for the review 👍
Your welcome dad

Just got mine it’s perfect. I think you got a dud
aluminum handles = non starter especially at that price
What a whinner
Protech has historical poor quality control
