"Only Women Bleed" is a song written by Alice Cooper and Dick Wagner. It is a ballad about a woman in an abusive marriage. The song is often mistakenly presumed to be about menstruation, and that has limited its play on radio and in other public forums.

I saw Alice Cooper in Dayton, Ohio in 1982 I was 15 yrs old. The next day a begged my dad for a guitar. I was determined to be a Rock star. Today I work in a cabinet shop (I'm not complaining) but we've got a tight bar band. My wife does 90% of the vocals, but we do this one with me on vocals. We do Generation Landslide also with her back on vocals

Alice Cooper is truly a legendary performer, known for his outrageous stage shows. Yet, despite the theatrics, his music has always taken center stage. This is one of his best-known hits, and has been covered by artists like Frank Sinatra and Etta James.

Alice Cooper is one of the 'normal people' on the planet.
For the live performance, he is taking on the character that the song is about.
You hit it the nail on the head.
One of the biggest causes he fights for is against domestic violence.
He and Cheryl have been married for 40 plus years.
They met when she began dancing at his concerts. Now all these years later their daughter dances in the concerts.

This was released in the mid 70's. Originally the tense he sung in was in the second person. It was originally banned as "The Powers at Be" thought it was about periods. It's possibly the first song by a guy about spousal abuse. It's a masterpiece.

Alice Cooper is a rock legend. Been around since the late 60's. Not only this....he has been known to push the envelope, if you will, for human rights and such. He sticks up for the "little guy" as it were. He is a stand up guy and is still in the business. I know him to be a musical artist as well as a renowned producer...but he also hosts a radio program out of AZ (that is widely picked up) and still holds it down. A legend in every sense of the definition. Long live Alice...I wish more people thought/acted like him.

I used to tell family and friends about Alice.
      They thought I was stupid.
      ESPECIALLY my brother.
He would ALWAYS RAG ON ME about Alice and make sarcastic fun
of me and my favorite rocker.
All through the years (I am 61 at this time) he would give me shit
about him just to get under my skin.
He ALWAYS RAGGED on my choices in Rock Music and bands.
There was NO WAY IN HELL would he EVER go to ANY concerts I would go to.
Simply because I liked whoever was playing OR my taste in music.
One fine day, he decided to go see Alice's Dirty Diamonds Tour.
Yeah --- ONLY BECAUSE two of our cousins from the next town
      100 miles away were going.
They BOTH were Alice "Freaks" like I am.
It was an open air concert at Viejas Indian Casino in lakeside california (We
lived in San Diego) and Cheap Trick opened the show.
My brother COULD NOT BELIEVE HOW GOOD ALICE WAS.
He was AMAZED at how ACTIVE on stage Alice is.
MORE than most of today's younger bands.
Cheap Trick was awesome as well.
My brother commented how Cheap Trick was a lot about the music whereas
ALICE --- was more about the SHOW.
      PLUS the music.
My brother was an INSTANT Alice fan.
OF COURSE THIS PISSED ME OFF.
ALL those years I tried to get him to see Alice and he just SHIT all over me for it.
It had to take an "OUTSIDE" influence to get him there.
Afterwards, my brother acquired a few cd's and DVD's of Alice as he THEN
realized how good Alice really is.
However --- I am so happy that he got to understand what I knew all along.
      An Alice show is incredible.
      NOTHING LIKE IT.
I am 61 at this time and my brother was 3 years older than me.
He and my two other cousins have passed on in the last 3 years.
My brother got me into Rock Music as I was classically trained in Music
      and Music Theory.
My two cousins got me into playing Bass Guitar.
YES -- I am a musician and STILL play Classic Rock and Early Metal.
      GOD BLESS ALICE COOPER.
      KISS.
      AND BLACKIE LAWLESS (W.A.S.P.).

This could be Alice's most sensitive song, and it has so much to say. If you want a good indication of Alice's showmanship, a performance of "Welcome to My Nightmare" is in order. Alice is an interesting guy. He was a serious alcoholic in the 1970s but then became a born-again Christian. Nowadays he plays golf in Arizona but still performs the old songs in concert. One interesting fact is that he was very close to Groucho Marx before he died in 1977. Though he's known for hard rock songs, some of his bigger hits are soft ballads like this one, "I Never Cry", and "You and Me".

This song was a huge left turn for Alice, his first true ballad. This live version doesn't even come close to conveying the tenderness and sympathy of the original. It was truly singular in it's time, a hard edged rocker speaking out for woman's plight.

If you want a “Rock Star” role model, then Alice is the one! He got sober in the 70’s, been married almost 50 years, doesn’t drink/drug, barely swears (ass, damn at the worst), and he’s an actual minister. He’s well respected among his peers and actually counsels other rock stars to try and help them with their own addictions.

My first Alice Cooper concert was in 1975 or so. Alice has three schools now that teach the arts to those that wouldn't have a chance elsewhere. His songs cover the dark ranges of humanity. Dealing with child abuse and family issues. The one message that rains supreme is that you never get away free. After this scene he is captured and has to pay for his actions. He is hung or put in the electric chair or decapitated for the sins he commits. Nobody gets out for free. There are very few "MUST SEES" as far as a group or performer but Alice is one of those. He is in his 70s and when he gets on stage that all goes away. Can't tell you how many times I've seen him but he has enough content that he rarely plays the same list twice. One of the few artists that truly appreciates where he is and how he got there. See him eating in a restaurant and he will set down his dinnerware and take time to chat with you. He is out on the road again and if you get a chance visit with him for a few hours.

The song is about him and his family. I have no idea if he was abusive per say. But this song was about his epiphany. He realised he was drinking himself to death and constantly on tour not giving everyone in his life due time and love and affection.
Basically he realised he was taking everything and everyone for granted. His family loved him dearly, but he wasn't spending enough quality time with them. Ultimately he realised what he was doing wrong, gave up the booze and focused on his family like he should of.
It was not about violence despite some of the lyrics, they are non literal metaphors, but rather not reciprocating the love that his family is desperately trying to give to him. He was not there for them when they needed him.
Later in life he helps many out and says to get people addicted to golf, that way they will have no money for drugs or alcohol.
This is a song directed to all the men out there. Pull up your big man panties and act like real men and build a proper loving family.

Sorry to add on this....but he has MASSIVE hits throughout his career. I hate to make this comparison, but it does make sense (to me at least)...he's very much like David Bowie in the sense that he transcends throughout his career. Like....I can see how someone sees Bowie in his earlier days versus later days and likewise to Alice Cooper. But I can also see how someone says they can't be compared. And that isn't just the whole "shock value" that you get with makeup between the both of them. It's about their music. This was a marvellous example of Alice Cooper tackling real issues, in this case a neglectful and abusive husband. Decades later he would revisit the theme with Take It Like A Woman which was about a man physically abusing a woman. Dead Babies is another good example - tackling the subject of child neglect. However, by the time he works the songs into the stage act I feel it comes across as more sensationalised and dilutes the true meaning of the song. That being said, it’s a powerful song. And he always puts on a great show. I’ve seen him live twice now and haven’t been disappointed yet.

One that chokes me up inside has to be "Every Woman has a name".
Just thinking about it gets to me.
      I LOVE THAT SONG.

people forget, he's also the son of a preacher man and he is religious person. He doesn't have any "foul" language in his songs either if you'll notice.

You got it right. He was promoting awareness of domestic violence...which was swept under the rug in the 70's because no one wanted to admit it existed. He also changes some of the words in the song from the album version to make seem like "he" was the one doing the violence. Guess it made for a better live show. For a complete 180, try listening to "You And Me" also from the 70's. ua-cam.com/video/WlxcI-Ejkbs/v-deo.html

This song was released in 1975 and the lyrics were changed slightly for this show since he never sang it in first person. Also the it really is telling to listen to this version in comparison to the 70s version he could hold those notes and reach higher octaves back then. He was a under rated singer for sure most knew the make up and shocking shows but it was obvious he had vocal training and he is a long distance runner so he had the lungs.

He is the son and grandson of Baptist ministers and is a born again Christian. He is a very well respected entrepreneur in the Phoenix area. He donates a car to the Barrett-Jackson car auction for charity. He along with the ex baseball pitcher Randy Johnson owns a restaurant in Scottsdale Arizona.

This is not a song that okays violence against women. Merely the extent that a woman truly bleeds unknowingly to anyone around her. I thank all the courageous woman who had the strngth to walk away from the bleeding. And remember this song came out in a sad era that family violence was exceptable. I grew up in the era and was lucky my father never showed any violence. With the hours of work he was doing a young family in an era where there was no government welfare or handouts. This great human being I call dad is the reason I respect all

    Thanks for this great review,
Alice has always been a master of provocation.
He especially courts controversy in the titles of his compositions which feeds the mainstream media critics into a frenzy of outrage (which results in greater record and concert sales, ironically) but, when you examine the lyrics of those verses (which the critics never seem to do) he is almost invariably raising awareness to and advocating AGAINST the very crimes and socially unacceptable behaviours which those song titles outline.
A classic example is his truly brilliant "Dead Babies" (I mean, what an awful thought and what a horrific title).
Listen to it whilst reading the lyrics and you'll see exactly what I mean.

The recorded version I think is better....in this live version he says 'I' ...on the recorded version it's 'he'. And any moron who thinks this song is about woman's periods should have to take a lifetime course in music appreciation. Another great ballad by him is ' How You Gonna See Me Now ' . Thanx for playing this, I think it needs to be heard :)

He knows what he's talking about. Maybe that's why he treats his own wife so well. From my experience after 5 long term relationships, you're better off alone. I only married one of them because he seemed to be a good one. He's now doing 10 years. I'm loving my life without bothering with men. I'm in a healthy relationship with myself and I've never been treated better.
