There's a great show from the UK called The Repair Shop. Craftsmakers repair peoples family heirlooms. It was on Netflix in the US for ages but they're now uploading all the seasons to youtube. One of my fav comfort shows.@@BrainOnBinge
Goblins (and their king) in a churchyard at Christmas Eve might possibly be a nod to a chapter of Charles Dickens' 1836/7 work 'The Pickwick Papers', where a story is related about one Gabriel Grub who is carried off by goblins to be made a better man in a sort of early version of the more familiar 'Christmas Carol'. It's not clear whether Russell is deliberately referencing this here, but there are certainly connections. But then 'Doctor Who' is never afraid to beg, borrow or steal from literature, folklore and old films!
Here's the beautiful thing about Doctor Who... you can start pretty much whenever, but ESPECIALLY when a new Doctor shows up. There's no best time, but new Doctor means new everything usually, so it's basically a blank slate. Glad you're having a good time!
Hope you enjoy watching from at least Eccleston. If for no other reason, this show has had a near 24 and 20 year run respectively so there's a ton of history there. But the writer is very keen on little wink references to old stories. Him being adopted is a wink to Jodie Whittaker's Doctor, as were the villains from Wild Blue Yonder. The Giggle was in relation to the very first; Kate Lethbridge Stuart and Mel from UNIT have history going back to the third...just lots of little things that you can absolutely enjoy on their own, as usually every new doctor serves as a jumping on point, but they're that much sweeter when you actually GET them. Like that feeling when you quote a movie and someone knows precisely what you're talking about. Sweet like a cherry sundae. Badumtis!
This episode was very "Dr Who!" They can be quite eccentric and sometimes it doesn't work! But when it does it's some of the best of British television! This one was good - and I think the Goblins were included because it was the Christmas episode! If you are watching Eccleston make sure you see The Unquiet Dead, The Empty Child and Dalek! Three of the best!
I love how all four specials were vastly different but also had a familiarity amongst them. Now that you mention it, that makes sense bout the goblins.
@@BrainOnBinge I have to say with these 4 specials, Dr Who seems to have got it's mojo back. The last few years weren't the best! It started well back in 2005! You'll have fun with Eccleston and Tennant!
I think you're actually right about them really being more like gremlins than goblins. But seems like Warner Bros have been arguing in court since 2021 that they own the word 'gremlin' even though it and the mythical creature existed before the movie! So I don't blame the Who team for steering clear of actually using the word out loud.
That's interesting, I wonder if they'll win in court. & Yes I agree, best to stay to steer clear of the drama, gremlin or goblin I think the point came across fine.
That is quite offensive really; that a corporation feel they can lay claim to a folkloric figure; it's like theft from the people, like when a public right of way is blocked off by a landowner.
I was less impressed with the goblins, too, but you make a good point about the villain being less important to this story than the characters and the backstory.
I was much more entertained by Ruby and her backstory and all the little differences her being adopted by Carla made, but there was a goblin music number, and that was fun.
With this writer/showrunner, the monsters/aliens often take a bit of a backseat to the Doctor and companions' stories. But that is fine, RTD is brilliant at community and world-building. Welcome to the fandom!
The era of #FabulousFifteen has begun! Ncuti is so far a great doctor. I hope he continues to shine. I think the episode was good. not perfect, but honestly i'd still give it an 8/10 for keeping to what I feel is a typical Doctor Who cheesey/Christmasy story. Anyways that said, I look forward to your journey through the 2005 revival. It will go by in a flash, but I promise you, the journey is Absolutely Fantastic! :D
#FabulousFifteen I like that! I'm enjoying The Doctor and Ruby so far looking forward to seeing their next adventure. Hopefully I make a dent in the revival by then.
How awesome was Ncuti in this? I wasn't that impressed with the episode on first viewing, but the more I watch it the better it gets. I can't wait to see where the show goes and how you take to it.
I watch them each about 2-3 times, the first time when filming my reaction, then again after filming and lastly when i'm editing. I always notice little things on the 2nd and 3rd watch that make the episode even better.
You need to start reacting to new dr who from the 2005 Chris ecclestone episodes onwards.... they are EPIC... trust me... as its 2005 some of the effects look dated but the payoff, the payoff! Enjoy
It's an interesting one. Fifteen is the first Doctor to have a kind of "synthetic" accent - a blend of posh eastern Scotland with a bit of Rwandan. So it's sort of autobiographical. I find the Rwandan bits easier to pick out than the Scottish elements; maybe that's because Fifteen's liquid consonants (l's in particular) are more Rwandan while the more Scottish vowels are more subtle.

It's not clear whether Russell is deliberately referencing this here, but there are certainly connections. But then 'Doctor Who' is never afraid to beg, borrow or steal from literature, folklore and old films!
I can admit im not familiar with the works of Charles Dickens so I would have never made that connection, thanks for bringing it up to me.
@@BrainOnBinge Well, it could just be a coincidence... But that's goblins for you! 🙂
this is such a good starting point. ✨♥️
I think so too
Here's the beautiful thing about Doctor Who... you can start pretty much whenever, but ESPECIALLY when a new Doctor shows up. There's no best time, but new Doctor means new everything usually, so it's basically a blank slate. Glad you're having a good time!
Having the best time, so glad I took a chance and watched that first special
Davina presents the real Long Lost Families in the UK and she's something of a national treasure here.
Good to know, thanks!
Can't wait to see your adventure through Doctor Who 😊
I'm excited!
Badumtis!
I can't wait until I can understand all the references and nods. I have a lot of ground to cover but it's going to be a fun ride
❤️
Welcome to the Whoniverse !
Thank you!
That show actually exists on British TV and with that presenter. Just for your information.
Thanks for letting me know
Yooo.... Merry Christmas and Happy New year.... ❤️❤️❤️
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you too!
Tennant #1
Great to see the whimsy back in doctor who
I think you're actually right about them really being more like gremlins than goblins.
Ruby's mom is super-important. There's no way The Doctor didn't recognize her. He didn't go and talk to her for a reason.
I can't wait to find out more in the spring
I think he did talk to her. In the opening, he said no one knew her name til the Doctor came along...
Oh well spotted@@sallyatticum
With this writer/showrunner, the monsters/aliens often take a bit of a backseat to the Doctor and companions' stories. But that is fine, RTD is brilliant at community and world-building. Welcome to the fandom!
Thanks for the warm welcome!
Iconic 💞🍷
The way the new disney era has written is so people can start here
They did a great job of that
I feel like you can start with any new doctor and be ok
How awesome was Ncuti in this? I wasn't that impressed with the episode on first viewing, but the more I watch it the better it gets. I can't wait to see where the show goes and how you take to it.
I watch them each about 2-3 times, the first time when filming my reaction, then again after filming and lastly when i'm editing. I always notice little things on the 2nd and 3rd watch that make the episode even better.
Ncuti was great he has such a electric energy about him
Season 1 comes out in may.
That's great that gives me 5 months to watch the revival
The goblins seem a weird choice for a regular episode but somehow perfect for a Christmas episode 🤣
A pram is a baby carriage.
Thanks for letting me know
You need to start reacting to new dr who from the 2005 Chris ecclestone episodes onwards.... they are EPIC... trust me... as its 2005 some of the effects look dated but the payoff, the payoff! Enjoy
Love ncutis accent
Same!
This episode isnt a 60th anniversary special, its a Christmas special. The three david Tennant episodes were the 60th anniversary specials
Thanks for letting me know
6:40 I guess it took an "elfie" ;)
That pun was racist toward elves! 🧝🧝♂🧝♀
Nice pun. I sea what you did there.
By the time spring 2024 you will be pro whovian... You will cry, you will laugh, you will be angry.. some of the episodes will be Oscar worthy and some of the episodes will make you question humanity... You will choose who's your doctor soon... For me it's Capaldi and ncuti... Welcome to doctor who.. ❤️❤️
I'm really looking forward to seeing who's my favorite doctor once I finish the revival, thanks for the warm welcome to the fandom
pram=stroller
thanks!
What are you going to do, go back and watch the whole revival before continuing on with these two? Or simultaneously watch both???
I may watch both simultaneously, I may pause wherever I am in the revival to watch the new series. I haven't decided for certain.
You really should go back and watch the other doctors to really understand him
I hope you're doing alright. Been a minute since you posted.
Hey, I took some time to watch and record ahead in the revival so I can minimize spoilers!
Ooh smart move! Spoilers are everywhere.@@BrainOnBinge
@@BrainOnBingeFantastic - Thought that might be the case 😀
Hope you're still enjoying the ride !
Make sure you down 2005 season 1 episodes
Production Values are High, but Story Telling is Poor, Plot & Development not Good at all. Ncuti is a Strong Actor and Held things together very well but had to be struggling with the lack of Material. Actors did a Solid Job, no complaint there. Disney will want a lot better for its streaming platform. Would have been in real trouble without Ncuti & Millie.
lol
The actress is the same age as the companian she plays which has never been the case with companions before.
That's interesting
I don't know. Tennant is only three years or so younger than Tate.
@@Nine1215 (Read it again)
clearly I need reading comprehension, LOL@@sallyatticum
Total garbage and a waste of time
Then why bother looking up reactions? just so you can leave negative comments?
