    Many thanks again, Rob, RJ and Team AWOW, for another interesting program. Mitchell Ryan was a very fine actor. He is also famous to us Star Trek fans for his great performance as Kyle Riker, a civilian advisor to Starfleet and the "dead-beat dad" father of Jonathan Frakes's then-Commander William T. Riker in a Star Trek: The Next Generation episode. Ryan stole virtually every scene. In particular, the scenes between Ryan and Frakes were terrific and well-played, especially their anime-style martial arts match at the end. Rest in Peace, Mr. Ryan, and keep playing ambo-jyitsu. And best of health to you all.

    MITCHELL RYAN... Rob as always was lucky to get to interview this talented character actor just a year before he passed on.
    Starting out with a classic in Robert Mitchum's THUNDER ROAD, Ryan had a pretty eclectic career as with ELECTRA GLIDE IN BLUE, but for me MONTE WALSH was his best western role with the best western cast.
    LETHAL WEAPON was certainly Ryan's biggest role, and for a long life playing bad guys, overcoming his drinking problem, to make it to the grand old-age of 88, was quite an accomplishment... especially having such great recall and chemistry with Rob in another fine interview!

    A great conversation with one of tha performers who seemed to be in everything Mich Ryan. It is episodes like this one that reminds me that although it's a big industry many movie, TV and theatre productions were always using the same people because they were reliable, memorable and versatile. As time went on you got to know these actors names and would watch shows because you the cast would provide the performances that would make the shows worth watching. Mich Ryan was one of those actors whom seemed to be in everything. As you and he talked about various roles he played it was strike a cord in my memory of scenes I watched, and enjoyed his part in making the production great. I'd forgotten his role of the general in Lethal Weapon in which played the perfect military leader who had decided that for the good of the world his vision must prevail. This allowed him to do unspeakable evil with a perfectly air of moral superiority. So many great performances that one can't recall without a prompt, which you always give at the needed time. Thanks for another stroll down the the films and TV shows that I viewed my whole life.

    Naked City was a truly ground breaking cop series, shot in a semi documentary style at real NYC locations on the actual streets of Manhattan around Greenwich village and the South Bronx where the fictional Precinct was supposedly located, a lot of it on waterfronts, in back alleys, around old warehouses, in rundown ethnic neighborhoods and other seedy, crumbling very untouristy locations.
    In other words just where you'd expect the criminal element to hang out.
    Which made it pretty unique for the time, with a realism very rare for the more sound stage bound television of those days. And shot entirely in black and white, another element giving it that gritty feel, one unlikely to inspire the gold star seal of approval from the NY chamber of commerce. And... a very real time machine, true life image of a late 50's early 60's city that no longer exists, thus making it possibly more fun to watch now than it was even back then. With superior writing, a terrific regular cast and among the best guest actors like Mitch, a lot of them local from the Broadway and off Broadway stages, yet to make their impact in California, like Dustin Hoffman, Jon Voight, George Segal, Sandy Dennis, Martin Sheen, Christopher Walken and Robert Duvall, that group of future greats just starting their careers, another thing that made the show special, and one that still holds up on every level to this day.

    • @paulkitt-er9dr
      @paulkitt-er9dr Рік тому +1

      Your right Naked city was a ground breaking show it introduced to these actors you mentioned as well as writers Howard Rodman and Stirling Silliphant. I always wondered why they replaced John McIntyre with Horace McMahon.

    • @hiramnoone
      @hiramnoone Рік тому +2

      @@paulkitt-er9dr The story they put out was that McIntyre didn't like being stuck in New York and wanted to get back to his ranch in Montana, but later revealed he didn't get along with his costar James Franciscus, and so agreed to be killed off.
      Strange cuz in my opinion anyway, they had great chemistry in that first season of half hour shows, that saw McMahon and Paul Burke replace both of 'em in the later hour long eps. Who had great chemistry too, so the show lost nothing.
      Burke, a good actor and fine in NC went on to replace Robert Lancing in 12 O'clock high, a big mistake I thought, and that show suffered for it. The studio's reasoning was they wanted a young actor to appeal more to a more youthful audience. The irony being, not only was Lancing more suitable for the role, he was a year younger than Burke.
