As a child in the 1950's, I'd often hear my parents and relatives talk about James Cagney. If I remember correctly, somewhere around age 10-12 my dad and I watched "Angels With Dirty Faces" on TV. I believe it dealt a young adult group commiting various crimes with Cagney, the tough guy head of the group, ending up going to the electric chair at the end. It made me think twice about doing anything criminal and scared scared the hell out of me. As I got a little older, I believe Cagney was pretty much done with acting (this would have been the later 1960's). He's life story seems remarkable when I think about some of the actors and entertainers over the past 20 years. Having seen other films of his as I got older, I can only say he was an intelligent, honest, and remarkable man who never forgot where he came from. He was nothing like some of the films he did; a very humble man at best.
Cagney retired from acting in 1961 ("One, Two, Three" was his last career movie), but he came out of retirement to star in "Ragtime" in 1981. That was his last theatrical release movie.
Yes! Why media has to pick on the deceased. There’s plenty of biography’s. Deceased in death deserve benefit of doubt, even if sinned, so what. God would be bored stiff if all he got were perfect saintsZ. These famous have been dead for years now
James Cagney was one of the all-time greats, and he could do it all and make it look effortless and, boy, could he dance and towards his latter days, he was a great chat-show guest here in the UK.
I have a studio photo of James Cagney on my wall next to Jean Harlow and Roseland Russel. Its a black and white tribute wall to some of our wonderful actors and actresses.
I first watched Yankey Doodle Dandy when I was in early grade school in about 1953. I love to see it over & over. I read George M. Cohan's biography when I was in high school. I read James Cagney's bio a few years ago.
The most impressive thing I remember about JC is that he never divorced (which is rare in Hollywood). He told the interviewer, "people expect too much" when asked about his secret to staying married to his wife Frances for 64 years until his death in 1986.
Interesting/informative/entertaining. Excellent still motion photography pictures 📷. Enabling viewers to better understand what the orator is describing. Wishing viewers a safe/healthy/prosperous(2024)🌈🎉💵😉.

One of the Hollywood greats. Many superb movies. I just watched Love Me Or Leave Me, with Doris Day. wow. It's a street named after him on 91st between 2nd and 3rd Aves. in NYC. Closed to traffic. I sit there often.
A few years ago when the midnight movies used to be on a saturday night the movies were some times james cagney films and my family.aleays watched his movies on saturday nights the good old days
My Mum loved his movies, especially his dancing,-she would have loved to have seen this video,-and she was Irish too, and l think that was something to do with it,--Brian from the UK
A nice salute to JC; but with a few factual problems and some facts and mentions made without previous foundational preparations. For two examples, the director Raoul Walsh was mentioned only as "Walsh" and it was mentioned in the presentation that JC went to work in a show in the role of a chorus girl in 1911 (which would have been at age 11 or 12), but this happened years later. But the clips and stills are well selected and include a few that are seldom seen in other presentations. The voice-over is a little creepy, but offered at a good pace. Overall this is a good introduction to Cagney.
When Cagney is on the screen you watch him. The rest of the cast seem to melt into the background. That is stage presence. Very few actors have it. Cagney had it in spades.
A number of very good flying movies with Pat O'Brian wasn't mention....It also wasn't mention anytime that I can remember even his life story with him sitting in his wheelchair....
Here's my Cagney flex One of my contractor boss's was a back fence neighbor to Cagney and my 2nd tenant remembered him as a grumpy old man sitting at the end of the bar adjacent to the Vassar campus
This guy wasn't scared of anything. He took on the Mafia single-handedly. Cagney had a lot of guts, he was just as tough in real life as he was in the Movies.
Never saw him give less than a good, solid performance. Usually he was mesmerizing on the screen. The guy could play comedy, drama, and even musicals. And boy what a hoofer. Never heard a bad word against him either, no bad scandals or Hollywood escapades. Good by Mr. Cagney, you made it to the "Top of the World, Ma."
When Cagney came to Ireland to do Shake hands with the devil, They wouldn't let him play because of his gangster films ,they made up a lame excuse about poor weather. The Gaiety playhouse felt Jimmy's name would tarnish its image, They should have welcomed him with open arms. It would have also been very good for the Gaiety for James Cagney to perform there.
Wow! Cagney was such an iconic actor and dancer! He was so amazing! It's too bad this compilation and story of his life is so badly put together! The timeline is completely messed up and jumps back and forth and leaves out important details while glossing over others. The story of James Cagney's life deserves better!
Neither his daughter or grandchildren received a penny in his will.Cagney's wife Billie had no feelings for the children at all.I don't know why Cagney always did what she told him.
A late friend of mine had an affair with Mr. Cagney when she worked on his horse farm. She was 18 and he was 60. Nowadays we'd say he took advantage of her. She said he was irresistible and she never bore him any ill will.
@@Len-yy3ox You have no idea who Trina Kingsbury was. Look up her name. Location: Martha's Vineyard. Indeed, Mr. Cagney had a summer home on the island and a horse farm in upstate New York. She wasn't a liar. Nor am I. Vineyard folks know all sorts of stuff about local property owning celebrities, living and deceased, which we never share with the public. You wouldn't believe most of it. I didn't until I lived there year round for a decade and a half. Trina knew "where all the bodies were buried". Literally. She asked me to be her biographer after she passed. Trina died in 2018 at the height of the island's tourist season. She was never fond of tourists.
Cagney was born in1899! This video says that in 1911, he was working in a department store??? At 12 years old??? Where he was discovered as a potential dancer!!! He auditioned to be in a show as a dancing sailor??? A 12 years old!!! Who the hell makes up this BS???
Most kids worked in those days, unless the family was rich, there were no laws against it. Kids worked to help put food on the table. Cagney initially learned to dance on the streets, he told about it in his autobiography, it was called "hoofing." Dancing was a way to spend time, compete with friends, and it didn't cost anything. No BS here, just a different day and time.
Thanks for visiting The Page Of Wonder Channel! I hope you enjoy the watch!
Finally, "the truth", eh ? Ya'll are the same...
Excellent actor james cagney always loved him
A true icon.

Always loved watching him dance and I thought he was so funny, he was also a good artist. I wish I could have met him
What a wonderful person.
What a brilliant man! Never realized what a sophisticated, versatile and caring life he led.

Excellent documentary. One suggestion.....The Bow needs to be pronounced like Wow. It is his final bow. His final curtain call.
I hear you but I think Artificial Intelligence reads all these scripts.

It's AI - they gave it away by repeatedly pronouncing Stephen Colbert as Coburt.

I believe his the best dancers from way back. He was powerful
One of the last great actors. From early 20s to an old man. I always liked his films.

James Cagney's last movie was, "Ragtime," filmed in 1980.

Hey y'all 😮
What shook Hollywood to the core?
Title misleading.informatiom is not shocking
You forgot to mention "Ragtime" why?
A late friend of mine had an affair with Mr. Cagney when she worked on his horse farm. She was 18 and he was 60. Nowadays we'd say he took advantage of her. She said he was irresistible and she never bore him any ill will.
Lucky Lady !!!!
Your friend was full of shit
They said James never cheated on his wife?????
Your friend had a great imagination. Some people will say anything for aytention.I don't believe it.Not for a minute.

Both his children were estranged from him so he wasn't all that was he.
Why did you skip over his vaudeville roots?
Nothing here shook Hollywood to its core. Clickbait, as usual.
You dirty rat, why did you do that to my brother!
who?
