This lens is the best value for money offered. It would be extremely cool if they offered a newer up to date version 2 of this lens I'd buy it immediately
The 1.4 is good on FF, but on APS-C the new 1.8 STM is way sharper and has less chromatic aberration. This lens at 1.4 is less usable than what the 1.8 is, but it’s actually quite old now. I really hope that Canon will upgrade it, maybe featuring it with IS (like the 35)
@@clasijuls1 yea. If you see a 1.8 STM canon lens I would get that over this one. but if you already have it just make sure it stays stopped down to a 2.0 or higher. After using both for extend amount of time I would recommend the 1.8 STM over this one but if you know how to use both work excellent. this lens is just so old in design it is not as consistent in auto focus as the 1.8 STM is
Great image quality if you stop it down. It's too soft wider than f2. My advice is to buy a cheap lens hood and never take it off. It can break if you set it face down. $100 repair. I can't recommend this lens now that there are many other options on the market. Not at the current price point.
I agree with you about the lens hood, I never put a lens cap on either..The fragile auto focus is the one thing I hate about this lens. I've had this lens for years and I'always on the lookout for better options .. but what are they? The Sigma art is big heavy and $800 ..
@@JungleCatImages Maybe the Tamron 45mm? It's just about 400€ at the moment and a great alternative to the Canon lenses. It's sharp even at 1.8 and comes with image stabilisation. Great value for that price.
My only issue is that I shoot cars driving and I need that AF to be fast and accurate for that tremendously to help while rigged up to my cam truck. I don't have time to manually focus unfortunately 😒.
Hey great video thanks for the upload. I just bought one for a backup. Is it normal that the focusing ring is not that smooth? Feels like paper on paper when turned off cam. Thanks for any ideas/tipps
I have a question about the noise of the motor while focusing, I have the same lens but I have noticed it’s kind of loud when it starts to focus. I noticed at 2:08 your lens sounds kind of like mine. Would you say yours is somewhat loud in autofocus? I don’t use mine for video so the noise doesn’t really matter but I’m afraid of being in a museum or something I have this loud ass lens trying to focus lol.
Really great lens.... But... I really think you can't beat that nifty fifty, the value is too good to go with it. Nevertheless, it's still a better lens. Great video
You’re forgetting that this lens is compatible with a multitude of Canon EOS 35mm film camera’s before digital. Including the Canon EOS 1 series from 1989-2000.
I've had one for years and have had to have it repaired twice, its a well known issue with this lens. Although I'm happy with the images, I don't think I would buy it again
@@JungleCatImages Thanks for the reply. I didnt know it was a common issue but I will remember that if I have problems come up. So far ive only had it on my camera like 5 times with photo and video and no issues yet. We shall see how things fare for me as i use it more.
this lens is so underrated!
thanks for sharing this with us!
loved watching this
Thanks for watching man!
Thanks for this lovely tutorial...i love that you are using a Canon 6D for this...thats my camera..so i get to see the exact results

Definitely very old.
Hoping to see a new version!
I’m will be comparing this to the f1.8 STM next Wednesday
I went to Best Buy for a 1.8 and they sold me the 1.4 for the same price as the 1.8. I’m so excited.
Luckyy!!!!
Bro how
If you shoot this lens at F2 you will get AMAZING results trust me
I share the same opinion. But alwats I've seen reviews, all tests are at f1.4, f1.8 and f2.8
Really Rob styles ?
@@clasijuls1 yes tbh the 1.8 STM is sharper than this old design for sure but if you shoot at 2.0 or 2.2 it gets some crispy images
@@robstyles2675 I shall try it for sure ..thank you much

When using for fast moving subject, does this lens fast enough to capture focus?
I noticed massive vignetting on this lens when used in low light. Outside not so much.
how old is your piece? i got mine new from 2017 , on f1.4 it sharp and almost no ca and not soft at all. my camera is 6d.

Nice review. Worth watching.
Just making sure, this lens does not allow for zoom?

I have the 50mm 1.8 that I paid $50 for and can now buy the 1.4 at $130. Would it be worth it to resell the 1.8 and buy this one. Im on a DSL2
Definitely worth the extra money
Thank you for this in depth review! I am a videographer and having to image stability is a big no for me!
